PUERTO ESCONDIDO - GETTING AROUND
Exploring Puerto Escondido on foot is both enjoyable and practical, especially in neighborhoods like Zicatela, La Punta, and Carrizalillo. These areas are compact, with a plethora of cafés, restaurants, and shops within walking distance. Strolling along the beachside promenades or through local markets is a great way to soak up the local culture. However, be mindful of the heat during midday hours and consider carrying water and wearing sun protection should be non-negotiable.
Why not buses and colectivos? While local buses and colectivos (shared vans or trucks) are an economical choice, they may not offer the comfort and convenience expected by tourists. Colectivos often lack fixed schedules and can be crowded, making them less appealing for those unfamiliar with the system or the Spanish language. Additionally, these modes of transport typically operate only until around 9 or 10 in the evening, limiting their usefulness for evening outings.
By taxiTaxis are readily available throughout Puerto Escondido and are a convenient mode of transportation, particularly for longer distances or nighttime travel. Local taxis are typically white with colored stripes or lettering, often in green or red. Fares are generally affordable, with short trips within town costing around 40–50 MXP (approx. $2-$2.50), and rides from the airport to areas like La Punta ranging between 200–350 MXP (about $10-$18). It's customary to negotiate the fare before starting your journey, as most taxis do not use meters.
By bicycle or scooterRenting a bicycle or scooter is a popular option for tourists seeking flexibility and a sense of adventure. Scooters are particularly favored for their ability to navigate the town's terrain and traffic efficiently. Rental shops are abundant, especially in areas like Zicatela, with daily scooter rentals averaging around 300 MXP (approximately $15 USD). While cycling is feasible, be aware that Puerto Escondido's infrastructure may not always be bike-friendly, and the heat can be intense during the day. Always wear a helmet and exercise caution, especially on busy roads.
