GETTING AROUND - SIBIU
The main forms of public transportation in Sibiu are buses and trolleybuses that connect the main areas and tourist destinations in the city.
The local transportation company is named Tursib with information about timetables and routes available at the Tourist Information Center and several other locations in the city.
Tickets can be purchased at ticket booths or onboard the buses, and trolleybuses costing around 2 RON per person.
By TrainThe main railway station Gara Mare in Sibiu is situated just a 10-minute walk from the Old Town. Strada Magheru is located directly in front of the station and leads directly to Piata Mare. The number 5 bus runs from the station to Piata Unirii tickets cost around 1.50 Lei. There is a large parking lot outside the station where taxis and buses await.
Sibius is situated on the CFR-Romanian Railways Main Line 200 (Brasov-Fagaras-Sibiu-Simeria-Arad-Romanian Western Border. And on Line 206 (Sibiu-Medias). Many intercity trains (Blue Arrows) connect Sibiu to Cluj-Napoca, Brasov, Criova, Timisoara, and Bucharest.
There are five railway stations in the city; the Main Station at Gara Mare, the Little Station at Gara Mica, Turnisor, Sibiu Triaj, Halta Ateliere Zona.
By CarSibiu is an important part of the European road network, situated on two different European routes (E68 and E81). Sibiu is located on three different national roads; DN1, DN7, and DN14.
Renting a car if solely staying in the city is not necessary as the city is compact and walkable with good public transport. However, if you wish to travel outside of the city and experience some of the great roads nearby then a car will take you on some exciting journeys.
Driver’s can experience one of the most sensational roads in the world, the Transfagarasan Road takes drivers through Romania’s highest mountains; the Fagaras Mountains that cross from north to south. The Transfagarasan Road is carved into the mountains, an impressive and thrilling ride with curves that are tighter and tighter as you drive higher into the mountains. At the end is the Balea Waterfall which is a spectacular sight, and a cable car rides to Balea Lake. You can take the trip in your car or use the Balea Bus.
The Transalpina Road is the highest in the country, also known as “King Road” built under the rule of King Carol II. The road cuts through the Parang Mountains and reaches the highest point under the Urdele Pass at 7,037 feet with breathtaking views of the Parang and Fagaras Mountains.
By TaxiTaxis are widely available in the city of Sibiu, prices run per km should be marked on the passenger door and can be relatively inexpensive. Prices start around 2.50 RON and go up 2.30 RON per kilometer (0.62 miles). Takis can be found outside the train stations, major tourist attractions, shopping malls, or called and ordered in advance over the phone.
On FootSibiu is a very walkable city, the city center is a conveniently compact area that will lead you through the main plazas and the Old Town where many of the top attractions are located. Wandering down the narrow cobblestone streets and alleyways to find off the beaten path hidden gems is a wonder in Sibiu.
By BicycleCycling in Sibiu is very popular with 26 miles of bicycle paths making cycling around to explore a dream. There are several opportunities to rent bicycles in the city with a large rental center offered by the l’Velo Bike Sharing group located in a parking lot behind Piata Unirii where yellow city bikes can be rented for 15 Lei. There are guided bike tours offered to explore the surrounding areas by mountain bike, a 3-4 hour guided tour will cost around 120 RON.
