The Great Plains

The area between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains is referred to as the Great Plains, consisting of the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. For many, the Great Plains evoke imagery of the pioneers choosing to restart their lives in this beautiful part of the country. The sprawling grassland prairies are home to surprisingly diverse landscapes and rock formations, and are known for such ubiquitous fauna as bison, coyotes, prairie dogs, and Pronghorn sheep (a cousin of the antelope). While largely rural, the Great Plains boasts a good number of large metropolitan areas, such as Omaha, Des Moines, Wichita, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Oklahoma City, among others.
