Leticia Colombia FAQ

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

Leticia is served by Alfredo Vasquez Cobo International Airport (IATA code LET) which is located 8.3 kilometers (approximately 5.2 miles) northwest of the Leticia city center. If you have not booked a private transfer with us, a taxi is the recommended transportation from the airport. A taxi from the airport to the center of Leticia will cost approximately 8000 Colombian Pesos (about $2.80 USD). There will be taxis waiting at Alfredo Vasquez International airport or by calling +57 311 5775206.

How do I get around the city using other public transportation?

There is no public transportation in Leticia. Taxis are the safest and most secure way of getting around. Taxis are available at Alfredo Vasquez Cobo International Airport, you can also hail a taxi on the street or call a taxi by phone at 311 5775206. A taxi to the border of Brazil will cost approximately 20,000 Colombian Pesos (about $7.00 USD). There are also motocarros, covered tricycle-type vehicles in which you are more protected from the weather. It will cost about 10,000 Colombian Pesos (about $3.50 USD) for a ride to the border of Brazil. There are several colectivos, older cars or vans, that are inexpensive and available about every 30 minutes. It is an inexpensive and it is nice to make the voyage. One colectivo picks up passengers at Tarapaca Km 11 (near Omshanty Jungle Lodge) and another picks up passengers at Tarapaca Km 20 (near Reserva Natural Tanimboca). The cost of a colectivo is between 1,000 and 2,500 Colombian Pesos (about $0.35 and $0.90 USD). You can transport by speed boat from the commercial port to Puerto Narino (with stops in between), make sure to ask for the lancha (fast boat). The ride will take about 2 hours upriver and 1 hour to return. Boats leave at 8 am, 10 am and 2 pm, and return at 7:30 am, 11 am and 4 pm. If you plan on returning at 4 pm, buy your ticket in advance as it sells out fast. The cost is about 29,000 Colombian Pesos (about $10 USD) each way. You can also rent a motorcycle(moto) or bicycle at many locations in the city center. Rental rates are about 50,000 Colombian Pesos (about $17.50) per day.

Is Leticia a dangerous city? Are there certain areas I should avoid?

Leticia is a very safe city. There is a strong military, police and security presence in Leticia. It is one of the safest areas in Colombia. It is very safe to walk in the Leticia city center. However, if you decide to walk outside of Leticia, we suggest that you do so accompanied by a tourist guide for your safety. A local tour guide can be reached by calling +57 313 2651778.

Can I pay/tip in US dollars?

US dollars and credit cards are not accepted at most stores or restaurants. ATMs are available in the city center, but not outside the tourist center. The currency used locally is a the Colombian Peso. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for Colombian Pesos upon arrival. Also, travelers checks are near impossible to cash and not useful for a trip to Leticia.

I don't speak Spanish. Will many people speak English?

No, very few Colombians speak English. The most common language in Colombia is Spanish which is spoken by 99.2 percent of Colombians. English may be spoken at your hotel and in the tourist areas, but is not common elsewhere. We suggest you purchase a good English- Spanish dictionary and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as basic greetings and numbers 1-10.

Do I need a Visa to travel? What are the requirements for Colombia, Peru and Brazil?

No, U.S. citizens traveling to Colombia do not need a Colombian visa for a tourist/business stay of 60 days or less. If you plan on crossing to Peru, U.S. citizens are not required to have a visa for stays of 183 days or less. If you do plan on crossing to Brazil, a visa is required to enter for any purpose. You must obtain your Brazilian visa in advance from the Brazilian Embassy or consulate nearest to your place of residence in the United States prior to traveling. Are Vaccinations required to visit Leticia?

Yes. Yellow fever is a risk in certain parts of Colombia, so the Centers for Disease Control recommends the yellow fever vaccine for travelers 9 months of age or older to these areas. Vaccinations should be at least 10 days before you travel. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans. Can I experience the indigenous culture here?

You can learn about the ways of life of the region`s indigenous tribes at the Museo Etnografico del Hombre Amazonico, a cultural center which houses a collection of indigenous artifacts such as numerous ceremonial masks, musical instruments, textiles, tools, pottery and weapons. The cultural center has signage in English, and is a great presentation of the indigenous cultures of the region. Also, Leticia is the perfect location to visit indigenous tribes nearby such as the Tikunas, Yaguas, Huitotos and Boras in the Amazonas just to name a few.

What type of food is available?

The food is a blend between Colombian, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine. Sanchacho is a filling soup (usually contains fish, plantains, potatoes, corn and pigeon peas), each family has its own variation. A staple meal would include river fish or domestic meat, rice, locally grown vegetables, rice, prepared over a wood-fired stove. Visit one of the local fruit stands near the river and try one of the exotic fruits like the purple Acai berry, reddish bananas, or star-shaped carambola.

Is the water safe to drink in Leticia?

No, the water is not drinkable. We suggest that you carry bottled water with you wherever you travel. Most tourist areas will have bottled water available for purchase. To avoid illness, make sure you don´t eat any raw vegetables or salads that are washed in water.

Where can I go bird watching?

If you walk through Leticia near sunset, you will see thousands of parrots returning to Parque Santader for the night. Parque Santader is located on Carrera 10 street between Calle 11 and Calle 10 streets. Across the street from the park there is a church called Iglesia Nuestra Senora de La Paz. For a donation of about 2500 Colombian Pesos (about $0.90 USD) you can view the birds from the church`s bell tower. The tower overlooks the city and has a great vista of the Amazon river nearby.
