ITALIAN RIVIERA - THE LIGURIAN SEA

The Ligurian Sea is the body of water situated between the Italian Riviera and theFrench island of Corsica. It is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea blessed withthe clear, warm waters and beaches that range from long and sandy to quietseaside coves. Its coast runs 186 miles and is filled with tiny yet stunningports and astounding sceneries for exploring, and turn into lively centers bynight, with plenty of entertainment and shopping on offer.
Aside from the more famous resorts of Portofino, SantaMargherita Ligure, Rapallo, Sestri Levante with its enchanting Baia del Silenzio(Silent Bay), and Chiavari; it also includes Sanremo, the city of flowers,famous for the Italian Music Festival and for its Casino; the refined towns ofBordighera and Alassio, with its almost 2 miles of fine sand, along withLaigueglia and Varigotti, some of the gems embedded in the Riviera di Ponenteand Lerici with its grand Medieval castle, elegant villas and lush gardens.

The extensive woods of Liguria with their centuries-oldtrees, a true natural legacy, are an excellent alternative to traditionaltourism. Places full of history, culture and traditions, which witness thepassage of ancient peoples coming from the sea.

This area has the highest concentration of aquatic mammalsin the Mediterranean Sea there are several specimens of sperm whales, rorqualsand dolphins, who find their natural habitat and live safely in this area knownas the `Sanctuary of Cetaceans.`

Along the coast, one can sail, windsurf, kite surf, kayak,scuba dive and even water ski. The coast and the inland area also offerexcellent conditions for other outdoor activities such as hiking, mountainbiking and horseback riding. Liguria is home to seventeen protected areas,including the Promontory of Portofino, and the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, a 250mile long trail that can be done on foot, horseback or mountainbike.
