The central business district or downtown area of Queenstown is a small, compact area that contains businesses, apartments, restaurants, bars, hotels, and shops. Airbnb rentals, hotels, backpacker hostels and rental apartments are all popular in the bustling district of downtown. Queenstown was named after two sheep shearers struck gold in the Shotover River and the gold rush town was said to be `fit for Queen Victoria`. Most of the surrounding attractions are within walking distance of the town center including Queenstown Beach, Queenstown Gardens, Wakatipu Lake, Beach Road and the mountains.

The historic gold mining town of Arrowtown is located just 15 minutes away from downtown Queenstown. The peaceful town offers a range of luxurious accommodations, 3 superb golf courses, spas and plenty of activities along the Arrow River. Visit the Chinese miner`s village, the Lake District Museum and a spectacular place to enjoy the seasonal colors of the fall, The Arrowtown Autumn Festival is held in the last week of April to celebrate the town`s seasonal beauty and ambiance. Arrowtown is the originating point for many walks and hikes and cycling tracks with easy access to the Queenstown Trail, Macetown, and Motatapu tracks.
