Day 1 - Mountain Pine Ridge

Welcome to Belize! Upon arrival, you will go through customs and immigration. Should you opt to purchase a transfer to your hotel; a representative will be waiting for you as you exit immigration. Arrive at your hotel, check in and do not give in to jet lag! There is so much for you to see and do at Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve!

Enjoy an afternoon of caving at Rio Frio Cave. The cave is a naturally formed tunnel with the largest opening of any cave in Belize (about 65 ft). You`ll need a flashlight to navigate the quarter mile to the other side. Rio Frio is very easy to explore all levels of fitness. There are plenty of other smaller caves to walk such as Tunnel Cave, Closed Jaw, and Twin Caves. The area is a perfect place for hiking and exploring.

Day 2 - Mountain Pine Ridge

The Mountain Pine Ridge region of Belize lies south of San Ignacio and the Western Highway. Few people think of pine trees when thinking about the tropics, but you'll see plenty of them in these rugged mountains. This area is a natural paradise with breathtaking waterfalls, wild orchids, parrots, keel- billed toucans, and other exotic vegetation and wildlife. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Hidden Valley Falls(also called Thousand Foot Falls), Five Sisters Falls, Río on Pools and Río Frío Caves are all located in this area.

Day 3 - Mountain Pine Ridge

Journeying on through the Mountain Pine Ridge, ultimately you'll come to Caracol, which is the largest of the Belizean Mayan Remnants. Caracol was an extensive classic Mayan center, rivaling and many times battling nearby Tikal. Excavation is still in its beginnings here, but the site is nevertheless extraordinary. At nearly 42m (140 ft.), the primary pyramid at Caracol remains the highest man-made structure in Belize.

Additional Days - Mountain Pine Ridge

Transport to San Ignacio and enjoy a tour of the Green Iguana Conservation Project. For about $9 USD, you’ll learn all about the iguanas of Belize and watch them in their own habitat. The tour is interactive, hands-on and is a great activity for the family. Take the self-guided nature trail on the property to learn about native Belizean plants, many of which have medicinal properties. Make your way to Chaa Creek Lodge and tour the Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm (BZ$18). There's also a self-guided medicinal trail on site. After lunch, spend the afternoon canoeing from Chaa Creek down the Macal River to San Ignacio. Catch a bus or a taxi to the nearby border town of Benque del Viejo, just a few minutes away, and head to Xunantunich, one of Belize's most beautiful archeological sites.

Another option would be to visit the Cahal Pech Mayan Ruins and Museum (BZ $10) in San Ignacio and tour the museum and temple. Afterward, walk just a bit further up the hill from the site to the Ix'tabai Restaurant, for a cold drink and the most spectacular view over the hills of San Ignacio. Finish there for dinner or head into town for more options.

Your Last Day - Mountain Pine Ridge

Depart your hotel for the airport for your return home. We recommend that you purchase a private transfer; if so, a representative will meet you at the hotel in time to take you to the airport for your flight out.
