HOW TO TIP IN ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA

On the Island of Antigua and Barbuda tipping is also common just like on any other island and/or resort. The questions 'when?' and 'how much?' can leave some travelers confused, as the practice varies. This guide attempts to cover most situations that you, as a tourist, will encounter. Hopefully using these tips will provide a smooth experience when interacting with locals in restaurants, bars, hotels, tour operators, and taxis. Tipping in Antigua is common just like on any other island and/or resort.

What is the currency used in Antigua and Barbuda?

The currency of Antigua and Barbuda is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$ or XCD). Notes are in denominations of EC$100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of EC$2 and EC$1, and 25, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.

US dollars are widely accepted on the island, though you will usually be given change in EC dollars, and at a less favorable exchange rate. Credit cards are widely accepted.

ATMs can be found all over Antigua, including at the airport, in downtown St John's, in English Harbour and in major supermarkets including Epicurean. All dispense Eastern Caribbean dollars; some also dispense US dollars. Barbuda presently has only one ATM (in Codrington).

Restaurants: When should I tip? How much is customary?

The actual tipping percentage is discretionary and should reflect the service you have received. If the service charge is not automatically added to the bill, tip 10% to 15%.

Hotel Staff: Who should I tip?

The average tipping percentage in hotels is between $2 to $5. The actual tipping percentage is determined according to the level of service given. Bellman typically get $1 per every bag they help you carry, and maids normally receive $2-$3 per night in tips.

There is no need to tip if you are staying at an all-inclusive resort, hotel or lodge, unless a staff member did something over the top to assist you on your Antigua travel.

Taxi Drivers: Should I tip?

Tipping percentage for Taxi Driver is typically 10%.

Bargaining: Is it customary?

Prices are generally fixed, although you might be able to negotiate a small discount at markets and from souvenir vendors, especially those patrolling the beaches.
