TIPPING IN BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

In the U.S. tipping is customary and expected for everything from lackluster to outstanding service. It is an etiquette that is ingrained in all trades, from wait staff at restaurants to our baristas, valets, cab drivers, porters, and many more trades.

The questions `when?` and `how much?` that surround tipping can leave some travelers confused, as the practice varies. This guide attempts to cover most situations that you, as a tourist, will encounter. Hopefully using these `tips` will provide a smooth experience when interacting with locals in restaurants, bars, hotels, tour operators, and taxis.

Tipping in the British Islands is the same as in the United States, it should reflect the service you received and 15% or more should be left at restaurants, although 10% is normally added to your bill at restaurants and hotels.

Currency: Can I pay in U.S. dollars?

The unit of currency in the British Virgin Islands is the United States Dollar. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand upon arrival. Currency exchange desks and ATM's can be found at the airport and many locations throughout the islands.

Restaurants, Cafes, and Bars: When should I tip? How much is customary?

Most restaurants in the British Virgin Island add a 10-15% service charge. Be sure to check your bill when dining out and check for an added charge, if no charge is added its customary to add 15-20% for a tip for the waitstaff. Also, keep in mind if you are charged a service charge, some restaurants spread this amount amongst the staff, and some do not use your discretion.

Hotel Staff: Who should I tip?

Some hotels in the British Virgin Islands will add a 10-15% service charge to your bill. It is advised to tip housekeeping $3-$5 per day, $1-$2 per bag for the bell boy, and tip the concierge at your discretion.

Taxi Drivers: Should I tip?

Yes, tipping taxi drivers is common practice in the British Virgin Island and 10%-15% of the total should be sufficient.

Tour Guides: Is a tip required?

It is advised to tip your tour guides when visiting the British Virgin Islands, there are many different tours offered including boat trips, snorkeling trips, island hopping tours, etc. Tipping at the end of a one day, multi-day or package tour is recommended, 10-15% should be sufficient.

Miscellaneous; is there anywhere else I should be aware of to tip in Puerto Rico?

Tipping throughout the British Virgin Islands is common, just like in the USA, so be expected to tip when visiting salons, spas, and other service industries. Normally the rule of 15%-20% of the total bill is the general rule.

Remember that it is perfectly okay to abstain, especially if you are not happy with the service provided. This is also true for hotel staff, however, if you should encounter a problem with the service within the hotel, we highly recommend speaking with the manager.

When paying for services in cash (which we generally recommend for services other than your hotel) remember to take your receipt. This is important for two reasons; If you leave a tip on a credit card, the person providing the service may not always get it, and if there is a discrepancy it is important to have your receipt to settle it with the manager of the establishment and to prove that you paid for the service.
