Jelenia Gora is one of the better-known spa towns in Poland, located in the country's southwest in the Voivodeship of Lower Silesia. Believe it or not, its position near the Karkonosze Mountains means it is not only a great place to stay to experience the Karkonosze National Park, but also the ski resorts on its slopes. Noteworthy sights include the spa district, called Cieplice Slaskie-Zdroj; the 14th-century Basilica of St. Erasmus and St. Pancras, built in the Gothic style; the 17th-century Baroque buildings on the main square; and the grand 18th-century Church of the Feast of the Holy Cross, built on the request of the Emperor of Austria. As a matter of fact, it is one of a minority of Polish cities and towns that were completely spared from bombing and destruction during World War II.
