The two small gaps in the Heavitree Range are important spiritual sites to the Eastern Arrernte Aboriginal people. Many places in the surrounding landscape are associated with the same caterpillar Dreamtime story, and form a 'Dreaming Trail'.
Emily Gap is a significant sacred site where the caterpillar beings of Mparntwe (Alice Springs) originated. These caterpillars formed Emily Gap, and many of the topographic features around Alice Springs radiated out to the edge of the Simpson Desert. Travel through the West MacDonnell Ranges to your first stop at Erldunda Roadhouse where you can purchase breakfast. You'll take rest stops during the 5-hour drive.
Upon arrival in the national park, learn more about the Aboriginal Pitjantjatjara people and central Australia at the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre.
Next, go to the base of Uluru (Ayers Rock) for the Mala Walk, which features fine examples of Aboriginal rock art, plus sheer rock walls and important sites for the Anangu people. Hear about their Dreamtime tales as you stroll.
Board your bus for the other side of Uluru and the short Kaniya walk to the Mutitjulu Waterhole. As you marvel at the red rock and, at wetter times of year, shimmering water, learn from your guide about the legend of the ancestral water snake named Wanampi.
Before sundown, go to the Uluru sunset viewing area for the highlight of the day: watching the sun set over Uluru. Sip a glass of bubbly as the iconic rock shades through multiple colors, then feast on a classic Australian barbecue dinner buffet.

We drive from the front of Uluru around to the Kuniya car park, which is at the back of Uluru. From here we start our second Uluru guided walk to the Mutitjulu Waterhole. The guide will take you along a short track to the Mutitjulu Waterhole home of an ancestral water snake called Wanampi. The guide will share stories of local traditions and explain how the Anangu people traditionally used the waterhole for hunting. Next, head to Standley Chasm for morning tea and a stroll along trails lined with acacias, cycads, ghost gums, and cypress pines. Continue on to Ochre Pits, where rock walls are covered by white, yellow, and red ochre, used for sacred ceremonies of the local Arrernte people.

The gap is of great significance to the Arrernte people, the traditional owners of the land. Temple Bar Gap fell out of favour following the site becoming the honeymoon location for Robert (Bob) and Victoria (Vicky) Darken who married at the Alice Springs Methodist Church on 25 June 1942. Bob Darken was given a week's leave from the army and the couple planned to camp for a week at the gap and borrowed a car and a tent. The couple had repeated issues with the car and it rained for most of the week so, concerned for their safety, friends decided to visit them regularly; they said they were "going to see the honeymooners" or "going to honeymoon gap".
