WHAT TO EXPECT

Depart your central Cairns or Northern Beaches hotel by air-conditioned bus and venture into rural North Queensland. Composed of highlands, tropical rainforests, and waterfalls, this pristine region is renowned for its beauty and ancient culture.

Visit the Babinda Boulders, a tropical creek lined with huge boulders, and hear about local aboriginal legends. Then head to your first swim spot, Josephine Falls, and slide down the natural rock slide.

Continue to the Atherton Tablelands and swim in the Millaa Millaa Falls. Bordered by protected rainforest, this 59-foot (18-meter) single-drop waterfall has featured in several TV ads.

After visiting a creek to search for platypus, enjoy another swim and a sunset stop at Lake Eacham, famous for its turtles.

Finally, return to Cairns, with your trip ending at the original starting point.

Your Guide will also serve afternoon tea here before starting the trip back down the Gillies Range to Cairns.

4: Millaa Millaa Falls

Next we will head up the Palmerston Highway onto the Atherton Tablelands to the most photographed waterfall in Australia! Millaa Millaa Falls are known worldwide for it's inclusion in the Herbal Essences and Qantas adverts. Here is the place to try the iconic hair flick or get a natural massage from the water cascading over the falls. World Famous and a must see on the Tablelands!

5: Josephine Falls

Next stop (and our first swimming spot!) is Josephine Falls! A short walk on an even pathway will bring you through the rainforest to the crystal clear waters and natural rock slide of the falls! Slip and slide down, cool off in the blue water or take advantage of the stunning scenery and take a few photos.

6: Babinda Boulders

Our first stop for the day is Babinda Boulders, this is a very well-known location as it is a significant place for the local indigenous people. During the 45 minutes here we will show you around the amazing site and tell you the history and legends of the boulders - there are a few spooky stories! This is considered one of Cairns' must visit spots especially during times of heavy rain the strength of the water passing through the boulders has to be seen to be believed!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your wildlife-spotting tour starts in the early afternoon with pickup at your hotel in Cairns.

Head to the Atherton Tablelands and Lake Barrine where you observe natural wonders by day and night, using the provided spotlights, binoculars, and rain ponchos as needed.

Follow your expert guide along interpretive walking trails through the rain forest to see thousand-year-old kauri pines, a towering curtain fig tree, butterflies, birds and flying foxes (bats). Check out a volcanic pool at Lake Barrine and take a break for afternoon tea at the 80-year-old teahouse, gazing over the lake as you snack on tea or coffee and fresh-baked goods.

Go in search of the reclusive platypus at sundown; if you're lucky you may see this shy and unusual animal in the wild. Before your night walk, have dinner at a country restaurant in a historic building. Afterward, take a night hike in the rain forest, while stars shine overhead. Using a spotlight, your guide points out bright green gecko lizards, the Lumholtz tree kangaroo, glider possums, frogs, owls, and tiny ringtail possums that perch in the trees.

1: Lake Barrine

After our drive from Cairns up the scenic but very twisty Gillies Range Road we arrive at Lake Barrine. A beautiful volcanic crater lake surrounded by the Rainforest. Firstly we take a break for afternoon tea and there is no better setting than Lake Barrine to enjoy it. Afterwards we take a slow walk through the surrounding forest searching for Forest Dragons and Musky Rat Kangaroos!

2: Atherton Tablelands

There is no better place close to Cairns to see some of the rarest animals in Australia in the wild. We spend the majority of our tour exploring the region searching for wildlife. Walking through the oldest tropical rainforest in the world is an amazing experience by itself. You will be immersed with all the sights and sounds within it.
In the late afternoon coming up to sunset we then go searching for the Platypus. The thrill of catching sight of this amazing creature will always stay with you. We do not stop looking until we run out of time to make sure you get the best possible chance of success. That is why we really do see them 90% of the time :)

3: Yungaburra

When its time for dinner we go to the beautiful heritage village of Yungaburra. Started in the 1890s. Many of the original buildings are still in use giving the reel feeling of stepping back in time. The centre piece of the village is our dinner location, the Yungaburra Hotel. Built in 1910 from the timbers extracted from the rainforest. And of an impressive size! It creates a great atmosphere as you mingle with the locals at the bar giving you a glimpse of the rural life in the pioneer days. The food is good and the meals are hearty so you will not be hungry. And you can wash it down with a local beer or wine if you choose.
After dinner we relax and get ready for sundown so we can start the nocturnal search.

4: Curtain Fig National Park

Once the sun goes down we start our search for the nocturnal creatures. This is the time when most animals are active in the Rainforest. The sensation of being surrounded by the sights and sounds and smells of the Rainforest by night is also an amazing experience that will stay with you. The places we go to are all specially chosen to make sure they are safe and easy to navigate by dim light as well. The range of animals includes mammals, reptiles, birds and insects. By the way, mosquitoes are low in numbers where we go. So unless you are a mosquito magnet you do not get eaten alive. The conclusion to the tour is our visit to the incredible Curtain Fig. An amazing natural wonder of the plant world. Reputed to be the largest strangler fig known in the world. We then make our way back down the Great Dividing Range to your accommodation in Cairns. But the sites and sound of the rainforest at night is an experience you will not forget.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your admission to Kurandas Australian Butterfly Sanctuary opens your eyes to a tropical world of butterflies, where more than 1,200 of these colorful creatures float around you while you walk through the rainforest environment inside the free-flight aviary. Spot the fluorescent yellow and green Cairns birdwing, and check out the moth exhibit for a look at a Hercules moth, whose wingspan can reach a whopping 14 inches (36 centimeters).

Included with your admission is access to the laboratory, where you can learn about the breeding cycle and discover how eggs are collected and hand-raised while they become caterpillars, who, of course, eventually turn into butterflies. See species from around the world at the museum.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your day trip to the Atherton Tablelands, part of the World Heritagelisted Wet Tropics of Queensland, starts with pickup from a central meeting point and a drive to the Tablelands, located about 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Cairns. After about an hour of driving, make a stop at the Cathedral Fig Tree, a large 500-year-old strangler fig tree with long aerial roots.

Our 20-minute Cairns rainforest scenic tour provides a taste of this incredible World Heritage-listed natural region. Cairns sits on a floodplain to the south of the mouth of the mighty Barron River. Meet your jet boat captain at the Marlin Marina in Cairns and receive your safety gear and a briefing before you step onto the jet boat.
Once youre ready, hang on as your jet boat takes off, quickly reaching the high speeds that make this ride so much fun.
