Our 20-minute Cairns rainforest scenic tour provides a taste of this incredible World Heritage-listed natural region. Cairns sits on a floodplain to the south of the mouth of the mighty Barron River. The Barron river flows 65 kilometres across fertile volcanic soils of the Atherton Tablelands and then journeys through the quaint village of Kuranda before cascading down the 850 ft high Barron Falls and out into the Coral Sea.
The Barron Gorge is an impressive natural feature carved out of the Great Dividing Range and the Falls at its head are intimidating to behold when in full flight during the tropical wet season. This scenic helicopter flight tracks up through the Barron Gorge up to and over the Barron Falls, passing the over the world-famous Skyrail Rainforest Cableway where it spans the river and around the village of Kuranda before turning for the coast and descending over the lush eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range with panoramic views over Cairns and out to the Reef.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Cairns has a jungle's worth of tiny wildlife hiding in plain sight, and most people never look down long enough to find it. This walk starts at 8:15am at the Cairns Botanic Gardens main entrance (8:10am if you're renting camera gear), where Bridgette or a member of her bug spotting team briefs you on the route and how to move quietly around wildlife before you begin.
From there, the pace slows right down. Every few metres brings a new find: jumping spiders, caterpillars, mantids, beetles, moths, butterflies, lizards, fungi, each one a photo opportunity with species context and photography tips delivered on the spot, so you leave with the shot and the story behind it.
Your guides connect the dots between species and the ecosystem they share, and questions are welcome throughout. You're back at the main entrance by approximately 10:30am, camera roll full of things you'd never have spotted on your own.

Your admission to Kurandas Australian Butterfly Sanctuary opens your eyes to a tropical world of butterflies, where more than 1,200 of these colorful creatures float around you while you walk through the rainforest environment inside the free-flight aviary. Spot the fluorescent yellow and green Cairns birdwing, and check out the moth exhibit for a look at a Hercules moth, whose wingspan can reach a whopping 14 inches (36 centimeters).

Included with your admission is access to the laboratory, where you can learn about the breeding cycle and discover how eggs are collected and hand-raised while they become caterpillars, who, of course, eventually turn into butterflies. See species from around the world at the museum.

Arrive at Bus Bay #7, Reef Fleet Terminal, 1 Spence St, Cairns Marlin Marina, at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure. Staff will greet you, complete check-in, fit all gear, and run through the safety briefing before escorting you to the shuttle. Your air-conditioned shuttle departs Cairns CBD for the 30-minute drive south to Behana Gorge. Your guide introduces the gorge and the day's route selected based on current water levels and what to expect from each section of the course. Embark on the Behana Gorge Canyoning Course for approximately 3.5 - 4 hours. Step into the gorge and begin your adventure. With only a maximum of 27 guests, your tour will be personalised and free of crowds.

Your day will begin at Cairns Marlin Marina on Finger B where you will board one of our fast vessels and take an exhilarating trip to the Great Barrier Reef. You will have a wonderful 1.5 hours exploring the reef with our snorkel guide before heading back to Cairns. Your day trip begins with convenient pickup at your Cairns hotel, after which you'll settle into a comfortable tour vehicle bound for Paronella Park. Disembark to explore the Spanish castle, dating from the 1930s and allegedly inspired Hayao Miyazaki's cartoon Sky City. Take a guided tour of the castle and walk through the surrounding lush gardens, past waterfalls, as your guide fills you in on the inspirational story behind the site. Travel to Herberton Historical Village, one of Queensland's most important open-air museums. Take a guided tour of the more than 50 original outhouse buildings, including intact interior displays, original vehicles, and machinery from the 19th century. Enjoy afternoon tea at the Bakerville Tearooms.

Set on 16 acres, the Historic Village Herberton is a tin mining town with shops, pubs, banks, chemists, grocer, printer, and garage. More than 50 restored period buildings are making this outdoor museum the most significant in Queensland.
The Historic Village Herberton is an outdoor museum presenting the story of Australias pioneering past. Its particular focus is on the tin-mining town of Herberton, which is its home. Herberton is the oldest town on the Tablelands, established in 1880 on the back of a tin mining boom.

The Historic Village pays homage to this era when mining dominated the mineral-rich mountains of the Atherton Tablelands. It has a strong interest in turn of the century machinery and small engines, transport, fashion, pharmaceuticals, motor vehicles, and war memorabilia.
