Our 20-minute Cairns rainforest scenic tour provides a taste of this incredible World Heritage-listed natural region. Cairns sits on a floodplain to the south of the mouth of the mighty Barron River. The Barron river flows 65 kilometres across fertile volcanic soils of the Atherton Tablelands and then journeys through the quaint village of Kuranda before cascading down the 850 ft high Barron Falls and out into the Coral Sea.
The Barron Gorge is an impressive natural feature carved out of the Great Dividing Range and the Falls at its head are intimidating to behold when in full flight during the tropical wet season. This scenic helicopter flight tracks up through the Barron Gorge up to and over the Barron Falls, passing the over the world-famous Skyrail Rainforest Cableway where it spans the river and around the village of Kuranda before turning for the coast and descending over the lush eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range with panoramic views over Cairns and out to the Reef.

We know the best places to view from the air, snorkel from the surface and or dive from below the surface. It has taken us half a life time to learn just a little about the Great Barrier Reef. The experienced team will advise you on the optimum time for viewing and photographing the the magnificent aqua blue and opal like colors of the Great Barrier Reef. Flights organised between 9:30am and 2:30pm will always be premium times to fly due to the sun being at the best angle overhead the reef.

Your wildlife-spotting tour starts in the early afternoon with pickup at your hotel in Cairns.

Head to the Atherton Tablelands and Lake Barrine where you observe natural wonders by day and night, using the provided spotlights, binoculars, and rain ponchos as needed.

Follow your expert guide along interpretive walking trails through the rain forest to see thousand-year-old kauri pines, a towering curtain fig tree, butterflies, birds and flying foxes (bats). Check out a volcanic pool at Lake Barrine and take a break for afternoon tea at the 80-year-old teahouse, gazing over the lake as you snack on tea or coffee and fresh-baked goods.

Go in search of the reclusive platypus at sundown; if you're lucky you may see this shy and unusual animal in the wild. 1: Lake Barrine

After our drive from Cairns up the scenic but very twisty Gillies Range Road we arrive at Lake Barrine. A beautiful volcanic crater lake surrounded by the Rainforest. Firstly we take a break for afternoon tea and there is no better setting than Lake Barrine to enjoy it. Afterwards we take a slow walk through the surrounding forest searching for Forest Dragons and Musky Rat Kangaroos!

2: Atherton Tablelands

There is no better place close to Cairns to see some of the rarest animals in Australia in the wild. We spend the majority of our tour exploring the region searching for wildlife. Walking through the oldest tropical rainforest in the world is an amazing experience by itself. You will be immersed with all the sights and sounds within it.
In the late afternoon coming up to sunset we then go searching for the Platypus. The thrill of catching sight of this amazing creature will always stay with you. We do not stop looking until we run out of time to make sure you get the best possible chance of success. That is why we really do see them 90% of the time :)

3: Yungaburra

When its time for dinner we go to the beautiful heritage village of Yungaburra. Started in the 1890s. Many of the original buildings are still in use giving the reel feeling of stepping back in time. The centre piece of the village is our dinner location, the Yungaburra Hotel. Built in 1910 from the timbers extracted from the rainforest. And of an impressive size! It creates a great atmosphere as you mingle with the locals at the bar giving you a glimpse of the rural life in the pioneer days. The food is good and the meals are hearty so you will not be hungry. And you can wash it down with a local beer or wine if you choose.
After dinner we relax and get ready for sundown so we can start the nocturnal search.

4: Curtain Fig National Park

Once the sun goes down we start our search for the nocturnal creatures. This is the time when most animals are active in the Rainforest. Your admission to Kurandas Australian Butterfly Sanctuary opens your eyes to a tropical world of butterflies, where more than 1,200 of these colorful creatures float around you while you walk through the rainforest environment inside the free-flight aviary. Spot the fluorescent yellow and green Cairns birdwing, and check out the moth exhibit for a look at a Hercules moth, whose wingspan can reach a whopping 14 inches (36 centimeters).

Arrive at Bus Bay #7, Reef Fleet Terminal, 1 Spence St, Cairns Marlin Marina, at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure. Staff will greet you, complete check-in, fit all gear, and run through the safety briefing before escorting you to the shuttle. Your air-conditioned shuttle departs Cairns CBD for the 30-minute drive south to Behana Gorge. Your guide introduces the gorge and the day's route selected based on current water levels and what to expect from each section of the course. Embark on the Behana Gorge Canyoning Course for approximately 3.5 - 4 hours. Step into the gorge and begin your adventure.
