WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Lake Cave

During the guided tour you'll see delicate crystal straws and stalactites reflected in the water; droplets of the last years rainfall hanging from the tips are a sign that the formations are growing. This is the most 'actively dripping' cave in the southwest, and the only cave on the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge that has a permanent lake.

As you walk through the cave your guide will describe how the uniquely beautiful features of the cave have formed over millennia. When seated at the back of the cave, you'll witness the changing vistas of the cave as the guide illuminates the caves incredible formations.

Once back above ground, admire the views from the Lake Cave Deck, a spectacular viewing platform in the treetops. The deck is built from beautiful local timbers and features incredible glass portholes with views through to the cavern below.

There is an interpretative centre onsite, designed to help you learn about the formation and history of caves within the region, throughout Australia and around the world.

After making your own way to Leeuwin Estate to begin your tour, your host shows you to a private open-air verandah for the included morning tea, which consists of coffee or tea, and freshly baked scones.

Following the morning tea, your host takes you on a behind-the-scenes tour of the winemaking process. Hear the history of the Margaret River region and Leeuwin Estate's winemaking philosophy. 1: Mammoth Cave

Entering Mammoth Cave through stunning karri forest via a gently sloping boardwalk, you'll realise just how much there is to see here. Over 10,000 fossils had at one time accumulated inside the cave; and upon excavation, many of these were found to be remains of Australian Megafauna (giant animals) that became extinct around 46,000 years ago. There is even a 50,000-year-old 'zygomaturus' jawbone embedded in the cave wall.

Wander at your own pace along the boardwalks and platforms, through the majestic chambers of the cave. As you go, your audio tour provides information on the history, geology and biology of the cave and surrounds. If you visit during winter, you'll see a stream flowing through the cave which flows a remarkable red colour; from natural tannins drawn from the leaf-litter in the surrounding forest.

As you leave the cave, you have the option to complete your tour with a walk along the beautiful 'Marri Trail', with a rich variety of song birds and stunning flora displays. Mammoth Cave is much more than a cave - it is a complete nature experience.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your tour will begin at 11.00 when we will meet at the Margaret River mouth, Prevelly Beach.

Please note we do not pick up for this tour.

Youll be greeted at Surfers Point where the river meets the ocean.

After our introductions and a safety briefing, we'll launch at 11.00 am, paddling upstream past cliffs, pioneer and aboriginal sites in our stable canoes. Access to the river is very restricted so there are no powerboats and the ecosystem is almost untouched, boasting an abundance of wildlife, unique coastal forests and tranquil waters. Lunch will be served around 1 pm served and includes an exotic selection of wild food tastes from all over Western Australia, including kangaroo, emu and crocodile along with wild nut pesto, quandongs, bush tomatoes and much more. Vegetarians are well catered for.

After lunch, well paddle a little further upstream past forested kangaroo habitats and learn the history of our first native inhabitants and the trials of the famous Bussell family who were among the first European settlers in the region. There will be opportunities for unique photos, fun in the sun before we meander back downstream or race for a bottle of Margaret River wine.
