  • Illinois Beach State Park

The southern segment of the National Scenic Byway passes south of East St. Louis and Collinsville down to Cairo, with cities like Cape Girardeau on the other side of the river in Missouri.

The northern segment of the National Scenic Byway passes through East Dubuque, Galena, and Fulton, among other towns and cities, with Dubuque, Bellevue, and Clinton on the Iowa side opposite the aforementioned towns.

The Great River Road in Illinois National Scenic Byway clocks in at 550 miles and is arguably the most gorgeous and picture-perfect segment of the drive. The middle segment of the National Scenic Byway passes through Nauvoo, Quincy, and Alton, among other towns and cities, with Hannibal, Ashburn, Louisiana and Clarksville directly opposite on the Missouri side.

  • Quad Cities

    The Quad Cities are located where the Rock River meets the Mississippi River. They are Rock Island and Moline on the Illinois side and Davenport and Bettendorf on the Iowa side. The Quad Cities are noteworthy historically as the site of the first rail bridge across the Mississippi River. Davenport`s `River Renaissance` and Moline`s urban renewal funded by John Deere (a company local to the area) have energized these cities, while Rock Island and Bettendorf have each held the title of `most livable small city` by the National Council of Mayors.
