Being more than 500 years old, it has an illustrious history and is one of the oldest temples in the region.

We visit a unique factory which makes hand made paper. Sri Aurobindo Paper Factory started 50 years ago and makes paper from 100% cotton rag pulp. we travel to Auroville, the radical concept of a global village where thousands of people from across the world have given up their nationalities and are living as global citizens. 5: Pancha Rathas

Pancha rathas or five chariots, a series of monolithic temples built by the Pallavas.These are rock cut monolith temples structures built in the 7th century. Each of the 5 rathas or chariots are dedicated to the lead cast of the Mahabharat epic- Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima and Yudhister. There is also a sculpture of an elephant next to the ratha of Nakul-Sahadeva. Once you stand towards the rear of the elephant you will notice that there is an uncanny resemblance between the rear of the chariot and the elephant.

6: Arjuna's Penance

We next visit Arjunas Penace, a bas-relief monument thats considered one of Indias most magnificent pieces of ancient art, depicting vivid scenes from the Mahabharata. The relief is 100 feet long and 45 feet tall! The main story being told is how Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, performed severe austerities in order to obtain Lord Shiva's weapon.

7: Krishna's Butter Ball

The next stop is Krishnas Butterball, a granite boulder thats poised on a stony slope. This curious boulder seems to defy Newton's laws of gravity and has not moved an inch despite being in this precarious position on the slope for more than a thousand years.

8: Shore Temple

Our last port of call is the Shore Temple. The magnificent temple overlooks the Bay of Bengal and was an important centre during the reign of the Pallavas when Mahabalipuram was the main port of their Kingdom. Built by King Raja Simha during the early 8th century, the Shore Temple is a landmark in the architectural landscape of India. Marco Polo referred to this as the seven pagodas. The existing temple is the last surviving of the 7 which once stood as a beacon for sea farers.

1: Chennai Egmore

The Egmore railway station is more than a 100 years old and one of the earliest buildings built in Indo-Saracenic styke. Designed by the legendary Henry Irwin to be larger than Charring Cross station of London, the Station was built by Samynatha Pillai. The building is a fine blend of Gothic and Dravidian design styles. It is the ideal place to start our walk about British Architecture in Chennai.

2: Chennai Central Railway Station

The Central Railway Station was built in 1873 in Gothic Revival style by British architect George Harding. It was modified by Robert Chisholm who added the central clock tower and Travancore caps on the main towers. Today, this station handles more than 350000 passengers every day.

3: Victoria Public Hall

Victoria Public Hall was opened to the public in 1887 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The hall, named after the queen herself, had been a venue for various events like public meetings, and even film screenings. The hall was designed by British architect Robert Chisholm and it is an excellent example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Namberumal Chetty, who had by then constructed various public structures in the city of Madras, built the structure.

4: Greater Chennai Corporation Office

British Architecture Walk continues to Ripon Building which was commissioned in 1913. Designed by G.S.T. Harris. and built by Loganatha Mudaliar, the Ripon building is named after Lord Ripon, a Governor-General of British India who was famously known as the father of local self-government in Chennai. Today this building is the office of Mayor of Chennai.

5: Southern Railway Headquarters

We next walk to the headquarters of Southern Railways in India. Built in IndoSaracenic style, this building was designed by N. Grayson and built by Samynada Pillai. It was completed in the year 1921. The Southern Railway headquarters was one of the earliest buildings in India to be built with reinforced concrete.

6: Napier Bridge

Napier Bridge was built in 1869 across the Coovum river and is named after the British governor of Fort St George, Francis Napier. It connects the Marina to the Fort St George. The narrow bridge was broadened and converted into a concrete structure and was opened to general public in July 1943. This bridge is often used by Media to represent the city of Chennai!

7: University of Madras

The Senate House is the administrative center of the University of Madras. It is situated along the Marina Beach. Constructed by Robert Chisholm , the Senate building is considered a great example of the Indo-Saracenic style with a harmonious blend of Byzantine architectural features. This masterpiece was constructed between April 1874 and 1879. It has a convocation hall, porticos, a parapet, meeting halls and a library.

The Victory War Memorial, formerly called the Cupids bow, is a memorial constructed to commemorate the victory of the Allied Armies during World War I (19141918). 4: Santhome Cathedral Basilica

We visit the famous San Thome Basilica, the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore. We can see relics of St Thomas here. It is one of only three churches in the world that has been constructed on the tomb of an apostle. The other two are St. Peters Basilica in the Vatican, and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Spain.

Fort St George is the first English Fortress built in 1644 by the East India Company. We will visit St Marys Church, the oldest Anglican Church of India. 6: Vivekananda House

We will explore the memorial for Swami Vivekananda who was a great philosopher. His speeches at the Worlds Parliament of Religions held in September 1893 made him famous as an orator by divine right and as a messenger of Indian wisdom to the western world.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Fort St. George

You will be picked up in your private vehicle & guide from your hotel in Chennai at 08:30 AM and proceed for your private full day trip of Chennai.

Your tour starts with Mount Road, the busiest road in Chennai. Here you will have a view of the city including malls and British colonial buildings. After that, you will go to the Pantheon complex built by the British. Today, this complex houses the Government Museum, the Connemara Library and the National Art Gallery.

After your museum stop, visit the Egmore & Central Railway Station. Its unique architecture is a mix of Mughal, Gothic and Renaissance styles.

Another pride of Chennai city is the Ripon Building. The building was named after Lord Ripon, Governor General and Viceroy of India (1880-1884). Next, you will go to Fort St.George, another legacy of the British. It is a well known historical monument in Chennai. This Cathedral was built on his burial site.

2: Marina Beach

You will then visit Kapaleeshwar Temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are a number of intricate designs and sculptures on the Gopuram.. The legend says that the Goddess Parvathi worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of a peacock.

A stop for a buffet lunch at a local restaurant will be made (lunch at own expense). After the lunch break, you will visit Marina Beach. Chennai has over 370 miles of natural urban beach along the Bay of Bengal.

The tour ends with a stop at one of the shopping areas, either T Nagar or Mylapore. As you drive here, you will see the busy street of George Town with their evening bazaars and flower markets. Your private tour will ends with your return to your hotel in Chennai around 5:30 PM.

1: Kalakshetra Dance School

You will be picked up from your hotel in the morning and driven to Kalakshetra Academy. It is a Foundation that was established in 1936 for the preservation of traditional values in Indian arts and crafts. It is renowned for its Dance Academy that helps to preserve the classical dance form of Bharatnatyam. The Academy is located in a sprawling 100 acres campus by the seaside.

2: Mylapore

Next drive to Mylapore, the most traditional neighbourhood of Chennai that is considered to be its cultural hub. Visit Kapaleeswarar temple. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. It is built in the traditional Dravidian style with a brightly coloured gopuram (top of the temple), several pillared pavilions and a large water tank. Legend has it that an angry Lord Shiva once turned his consort Parvati into a peacock. Parvati worshipped Shiva at a spot located within this temple to regain her normal form. The name Mylapore means the town of peacocks.

After the beautiful Kapaleeswarar temple spend some time looking at fine silk sarees and ancient artifacts in the boutiques of Chennai. The rich silks and colorful designs are a shoppers delight.

At the end of the tour, enjoy a South Indian lunch at a local restaurant (beverage excluded). After lunch you will be dropped back at your hotel.

1: Kapaleeshwarar Temple

Mylapore is - and has in some sense always been - the religious and cultural epicenter of the Tamil people. The village of Mylapore pre-dates Chennai. A great shore temple dedicated to Shiva once stood at this ancient thriving seaport, until the Portuguese arrived in the mid-sixteenth century. They destroyed the temple, created a Portuguese colony on the shore, and pushed Mylapore inshore, where it still stands today. The Shiva temple was re-built 300 years ago, and is called the Kapaleeswara Temple. It is a fine example of the pure Dravidian style, with gopurams and mandapams, and is the epicentre around which the area of Mylapore is built.

During this walk, you will visit the temple in the company of our knowledgeable guide. We will also walk through the surrounding areas, where you can see Mylapore in all its crowded chaos. The jewellers, silk merchants, fruit and vegetable sellers and the flower vendors in the bazaars provide a colourful backdrop to the temple. The walk takes us through small lanes with old-style homes, through silk shops, stores selling music and religious memorablia, kutcheri auditoriums, etc.

We will explore the memorial for Swami Vivekananda who was a great philosopher. 1: San Thome Church

We visit the famous San Thome Basilica, the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore. In the 10th century AD Christians from Persia, founded this Christian village of Santhome, and then they built a Church and tomb over the burial site of St.Thomas. Built in neo gothic style the present structure was built by the Portuguese explorers in the 16th century. The Shrine preserves a small bone of the Saint and the head of the lance with which the Saint was pierced. We will also get to see an ancient painting of Our Blessed Mother St. Francis Xavier used to pray.

2: Little Mount Shrine

Little Mount is our next destination in this St Thomas Tour. It is a cave in which St.Thomas hid in AD 68 and did penance. There is an opening to the east of the cave through which St.Thomas escaped when his pursuers caught up with him here. The palm print and hand print near the tunnels entrance are believed to be those of St.Thomas himself. We will also see the masonry cross cut at the top of the hill which is believed to be the cross before which St.Thomas prayed. Another interesting aspect of this cave is the spring inside the hill which is perennial and is supposed to be the miraculous creation of the St. Thomas himself.

3: St. Thomas Mount National Shrine

On 21st december AD 72, St Thomas was murdered on this hillock. The hill has a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Expectation which was built in 1523. The altar of this shrine was built on the spot where St. Thomas was murdered. A gateway of four impressive arches surmounted by a cross bearing the inscribed date 1547 is the other interesting relic of St Thomas Mount.

1: Kailasanatha Temple Karuppadithattadai Kancheepuram Tamil Nadu

Kanchipuram was the capital of the medieval South Indian Kingdom of Pallavas. The Pallavas were instrumental in the transition from rock-cut architecture to stone temples. We visit Kailasanathar temple of Pallava dynasty to appreciate these architectural wonders built in the 7th century by by Pallava king Rajasimha known as Narasimhavarman II. The Kanchi Kailasanathar temple is famous for its magnificent Vimana, the gopuram over the Sanctum Sanctorum. It speaks volumes of architectural beauty that flourished in the reign of Pallava King.

2: Ekambareswarar Temple

Ekambareswarar Temple is one of the famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.

It is one of the five major Shiva temples or Pancha Bootha Sthalams (each representing a natural element) representing the element - Earth. The other four temples in this category are Thiruvanaikaval Jambukeswara (water), Chidambaram Natarajar (ether), Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleswara (fire) and Kalahasti Nathar (wind).

Next in our agenda is to meet the legendary Silk Saree Weavers of Kanchipuram.

Kanchipuram is renowned for its magnificent Silk Sarees. Silk Sarees are a cultural icon in South India. Ranging in length from 6-9 yards, these Sarees are worn by women during auspicious occasions like a wedding or a birthday. There are more than 5000 families who are into the business of silk weaving. The sarees are weaved from pure mulberry silk thread.

The traditional loom is an incredible machine used by the silk weavers to magically convert the silk threads into a beautiful Kanchipuram Silk Saree.

We will visit one such Weaver and it will be a memorable experience.

1: Kanchipuram

You will be picked up from your hotel in Chennai and driven to Kanchipuram, about 45 minutes away. Historically, Kanchipuram was a center of education and was known as the ghatikasthanam, or place of learning. The city was also a religious center of advanced education for Jainism and Buddhism between the 1st and 5th centuries. Located on the banks of the Vegavathy river, it incorporates many temples. In Vaishnavism Hindu theology, Kanchipuram is one of the seven Tirtha (pilgrimage) sites. Fourteen temples dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu are located in Kanchipuram. We will visit the three temples that exemplify this sacred town. Kailasantha Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and represents a high point in Indian architecture. Ekambareshwara Temple represents the earth form of the five form-element abode of Lord Shiva. The ancient Vaikuntaperumal Temple has beautiful pillared corridors around the sanctum dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Next, visit Kanchi Kudi, a 90-year-old house, authentic in old-style architecture and functionality. It affords a glimpse of the life of an agricultural family in a small town. Mahabalipuram is an ancient town and was known to be a trading post during Roman Times. It rose to prominence as a bustling sea port during the rule of the Pallava Dynasty headquartered in Kanchipuram during the 7th century AD. Ships sailing from South India to South East Asia used to depart from the Mahabalipuram port.

Panch Rathas, or the 5 chariots is our first destination. These are rock cut monolith temples structures dedicated to Draupadi and the 5 Pandavas from the epic Mahabharata.

1: Pancha Rathas

Make the first stop of the day at the Pancharathas, or five chariots, a series of monolithic temples built by the Pallavas.These are rock cut monolith temples structures built in the 7th century. Each of the 5 rathas or chariots are dedicated to the lead cast of the Mahabharat epic- Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima and Yudhister. There is also a sculpture of an elephant next to the ratha of Nakul-Sahadeva. Once you stand towards the rear of the elephant you will notice that there is an uncanny resemblance between the rear of the chariot and the elephant.

2: Arjuna's Penance

We next visit Arjunas Penace, a bas-relief monument thats considered one of Indias most magnificent pieces of ancient art, depicting vivid scenes from the Mahabharata. The relief is 100 feet long and 45 feet tall! The main story being told is how Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, performed severe austerities in order to obtain Lord Shiva's weapon.

3: Krishna's Butter Ball

The next stop is Krishnas Butterball, a granite boulder thats poised on a stony slope. This curious boulder seems to defy Newton's laws of gravity and has not moved an inch despite being in this precarious position on the slope for more than a thousand years.

4: Shore Temple

Our last port of call is the Shore Temple. The magnificent temple overlooks the Bay of Bengal and was an important centre during the reign of the Pallavas when Mahabalipuram was the main port of their Kingdom. Built by King Raja Simha during the early 8th century, the Shore Temple is a landmark in the architectural landscape of India. Marco Polo referred to this as the seven pagodas. The existing temple is the last surviving of the 7 which once stood as a beacon for sea farers.

5: Varaha Cave Temple

The Varaha cave is carved out of huge piece of granite and dates back to the 7th century. This temple took several decades to be completed. There are squatting lions adorning the pillars which support the hall. Another highlight are the sculptures of two guardian angels who protect the sanctum.

6: Pancha Pandava Cave

Pandava cave is the largest cave-temple at Mahabalipuram The cave is supported on six pillars and two pilasters. The highlight of the architecture are the spectacular sculptures of mythical creatures called Yali on the pillars.

7: Mahishasuramardini Cave

Two of the most impressive works of art of Mahabalipuram reside in this cave. It has 2 imposing bas-reliefs on the walls. The first one is Lord Vishnu sleeping on top of the coils of a serpent. The other is with Goddess Durga fighting with the demon Mahishasura on a lion.

8: Ganesha Ratha

This is a imposing chariot carved out of a single stone. Originally dedicated to Lord Shiva, it now has the deity of his son Lord Ganesh. It was built in the 7th century by King Mahendravarman I. The other highlight of this temple are the 18 inscriptions in ancient grantha and nagari scripts of Sanskrit.

9: Mahabalipuram Lighthouse

Built in the year 640, it is Indias oldest light house and one of the oldest in the world. Mahabalipuram was a very busy port since the 7th century and hence this lighthouse played a significant role in keeping mariners safe.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Pancha Rathas

Make the first stop of the day at the Pancharathas, or five chariots, a series of monolithic temples built by the Pallavas.These are rock cut monolith temples structures built in the 7th century. Each of the 5 rathas or chariots are dedicated to the lead cast of the Mahabharat epic- Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima and Yudhister. There is also a sculpture of an elephant next to the ratha of Nakul-Sahadeva. Once you stand towards the rear of the elephant you will notice that there is an uncanny resemblance between the rear of the chariot and the elephant.

2: Arjuna's Penance

We next visit Arjunas Penace, a bas-relief monument thats considered one of Indias most magnificent pieces of ancient art, depicting vivid scenes from the Mahabharata. The relief is 100 feet long and 45 feet tall! The main story being told is how Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, performed severe austerities in order to obtain Lord Shiva's weapon.

3: Pancha Pandava Cave

Pandava cave is the largest cave-temple at Mahabalipuram The cave is supported on six pillars and two pilasters. The highlight of the architecture are the spectacular sculptures of mythical creatures called Yali on the pillars.

4: Krishna's Butter Ball

The next stop is Krishnas Butterball, a granite boulder thats poised on a stony slope. This curious boulder seems to defy Newton's laws of gravity and has not moved an inch despite being in this precarious position on the slope for more than a thousand years.

5: Varaha Cave Temple

The Varaha cave is carved out of huge piece of granite and dates back to the 7th century. This temple took several decades to be completed. There are squatting lions adorning the pillars which support the hall. Another highlight are the sculptures of two guardian angels who protect the sanctum.

6: Trimurti Cave

This cave is a fine example of the spectacular architecture style of the Pallavas. The rock cut temple is dedicated to the holy trinity of Hindu Gods- Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. There are fine carvings of elephants as well.

7: Ganesha Ratha

This is a imposing chariot carved out of a single stone. Originally dedicated to Lord Shiva, it now has the deity of his son Lord Ganesh. It was built in the 7th century by King Mahendravarman I. The other highlight of this temple are the 18 inscriptions in ancient grantha and nagari scripts of Sanskrit.

8: Old Light House

Built in the year 640, it is Indias oldest light house and one of the oldest in the world. Mahabalipuram was a very busy port since the 7th century and hence this lighthouse played a significant role in keeping mariners safe.

9: Mahishasuramardini Cave

Two of the most impressive works of art of Mahabalipuram reside in this cave. It has 2 imposing bas-reliefs on the walls. The first one is Lord Vishnu sleeping on top of the coils of a serpent. The other is with Goddess Durga fighting with the demon Mahishasura on a lion.

Shore Temple (Pass by)

Our last port of call is the Shore Temple. The magnificent temple overlooks the Bay of Bengal and was an important centre during the reign of the Pallavas when Mahabalipuram was the main port of their Kingdom. Built by King Raja Simha during the early 8th century, the Shore Temple is a landmark in the architectural landscape of India. Marco Polo referred to this as the seven pagodas. The existing temple is the last surviving of the 7 which once stood as a beacon for sea farers.

We reach the World Heritage Site of Mahabalipuram. Panch Rathas, or the 5 chariots is our first destination.
