    Asahikawa

    Asahikawa is famous across Japan for being the coldest city in the country and sits on the scenic but less visited island of Hokkaido. If you plan to visit in the winter months, make sure that you wrap up warm as the record is a low of -41°C which happened in 1902, although it doesn't usually get quite that cold every year. To the east, a cable car runs up Mount Asahi, location of the Asahiyama Zoo with its polar bears, penguins and orangutans.

    Furano

    Furano is a city in Japan's Hokkaido prefecture noted for its lavender fields, such as Farm Tomita with views of Mount Tokachi. Besides lavender, poppies, lilies and sunflowers also grow in the Nakafurano area. In winter, the two connecting peaks at nearby Furano Ski Resort host skiing and snowboarding events. The Furano Ropeway, one of the resort's gondolas, offers panoramas over the valley and stays open all year.

At its base is Motomachi, a neighborhood of steep streets with Western style, early 20th century buildings. The grand Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, built in 1910, is a city landmark.
