Particularly impressive is the Main Hall, rebuilt in its current classical style in 1623, along with a number of important national treasures, most notably an ancient sword and a copper axe, along with old manuscripts and documents dating back to the Middle Ages. From the shrine, which is surrounded by a large grove of Japanese cedars and camphor trees, are fine views over the River Naka. Be sure to allow plenty of time to also explore the adjacent Sumiyoshi Park.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: Kyushu National MuseumOpened in 2005, Kysh National Museum (Kysh Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan) made headlines not only for its award-winning architectural design, but also as Japan's first new national museum in more than 100 years. Built to house a large publicly owned collection of art and historically important artifacts related to the island's rich history, this state-of-the-art facility can easily occupy visitors for the best part of a day. Highlights include displays of prehistoric relics found in numerous archaeological digs, as well as exhibits tracing the long history of the island's importance as a trading link between Japan and nearby China and Korea.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included4: Kushida ShrineOne of Japan's best known (and Fukuoka's oldest) Shinto shrines, Kushida-jinja
was founded in AD 757 and contains many unique features, including exquisite carvings of the Chinese zodiac and a gingko tree said to be more than 1,000 years old. The shrine is also famous for hosting the Hakata Gion Yamakasa each July, a spectacular two-week festival focusing on prayers for good health and prosperity that includes an elaborate race involving teams carrying heavy wooden floats from the temple to various locations around the city.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free5: Tochoji TempleTochoji Temple( is the head temple of Shingon Buddhism Kyushu sect is given the special name Nangakuzan. Please note that yatai usually open in the early evening.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free7: Uminonakamichi Seaside ParkUminonakamichi Seaside Park (, Uminonakamichi Kaihin Ken), is a sprawling, family oriented public park located on a narrow peninsula across the bay from central Fukuoka. There is a walking path around the circumference of the pond that is just a little over two kilometers long and is popular for jogging, walking pets and leisurely strolls by the water.
Ohori is Japanese for moat, and the pond at the center of the park once served as part of the moat system of the neighboring Fukuoka Castle. The park was constructed between 1926 and 1929 and designed after the classical garden style of the West Lake in China. There are three islands in the middle of the pond that are connected to the mainland and each other by elegant stone bridges.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free9: Shofuku-ji TempleShofukuji (, Shfukuji) has the distinction of being the first Zen temple constructed in Japan. It was founded in 1195 by the priest Eisai, who introduced the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism from China into Japan. Although the temple buildings cannot be entered, visitors can walk through Shofukuji's attractive temple grounds and observe the buildings from outside.
Before Zen's introduction to Japan, Buddhism has already had a long history in Japan dating back to the 500s. The new teachings of Zen, which Eisai amassed during his travels in China, promoted meditation and discipline as the means to enlightenment and became very popular with the samurai class, which was exerting political power through the shogunate government based in Kamakura.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free10: Momochi Seaside ParkSeaside Momochi (, Shsaido Momochi) is Fukuoka's modern waterfront located on reclaimed land along Hakata Bay. There is also a wide variety of restaurants, offering Japanese and international food, that generally have reasonably priced menus. The fifth floor consists of the "Ramen Stadium", which has eight ramen shops with noodle dishes from across Japan, including the local specialty Hakata Ramen.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free12: Hakozaki-guHakozaki Shrine is known for being one of the most important shrines in this part of Japan.
The original was destroyed when it was set on fire during the Mongolian invasion of Fukuoka in 1274 but it was then rebuilt and has been standing in this spot ever since.
Some of the sights to look out for here include a stone anchor that would have been used by Mongolian ships and a statue of Nichiren, a prominent Buddhist scholar in Fukuoka who foresaw the Mongolian invasion.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included13: Fukuoka TowerFukuoka Tower is one of the best places to come in Fukuoka if you want to see the city at its best.
The tower soars to a height of some 234 meters and from here you can look out over the glittering city below.
One of the good things about the tower is that it is lit up at night and it is also one of the national symbols of the city, so it is well worth a visit when you are in town.
Another highlight here is the fact that the tower has a restaurant at the top so you can have lunch or dinner and enjoy the views below.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included14: Nokonoshima IslandFukuoka is known for being located on the coast and with that in mind it also has a number of pretty islands which are located just off shore.
To get to the island you can take a relaxing ferry ride which takes around 10 minutes and lets you take in the stunning views across the water at the same time.
There are several islands to choose from but one of the best is Nokonoshima which has a radius of some 12 kilometers and is known for its prime position in Hakata Bay.
If you visit the island you can enjoy activities such as hiking and swimming off the coast, and if you want then you can also set up camp here for the night and enjoy an evening under the stars.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free15: Atago Jinja ShrineAtago Shrine is one of the less visited shrines in Fukuoka which is a shame as it is also one of the prettiest.
The shrine is located on a hillside which means that you can also take in sweeping vistas from here all over the city and across to Hakata Bay and you will also be able to see the nesting storks for which this area is famous.
As you approach the shrine you can take in the torii gate which welcomes you and then walk up the stairs to get to the main shrine area.
This shrine is a little off the beaten track compared to other sites in the city but it is more than worth the effort to get here for the views and a glimpse of some of the religious history of the city.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free16: Dazaifu TemmanguDazaifu refers to the regional government during Japans past. At the Dazaifu Government Remains, you will be able to witness the former governmental grounds where buildings used to stand. Located near the Dazaifu Government Remains is a museum where you can learn more about Fukuokas history, and this is a great place for Japanese history lovers to explore.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free17: Yanagibashi Rengo MarketYanagibashi Rengo Market is the kitchen of Hakata - over 40 greengrocers and fishmongers line the market which sells fresh products. There are also shops selling fruits and tofu, as well as cafés and bakery where you can purchase finger food while exploring the market. You can also step into the restaurants to enjoy a fantastic seafood Donburi (a type of Japanese rice bowl dish) which includes ingredients such as fresh squids and salmon sashimi.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free18: Nanzoin TempleJust 15 kilometers east of Fukuoka is the Nanzoin Temple, one of the prefecture's most visited (and most important) Buddhist shrines, attracting more than a million pilgrims and visitors annually. The big draw here is undoubtedly the massive bronze statue of the Reclining Buddha, erected in 1995 and said to be the largest bronze statue in the world (if the statue of Liberty in New York were laid down beside it, the Buddha would be longer). As interesting as the temple and statue is the pleasant walk to the site along a shady hillside trail from the quaint village of Sasaguri, a route that is clearly marked and notable for its many smaller statues of Buddha, as well as its picturesque streams, bridges, and gardens. Also worth a visit is the famous wooden Buddha at Tch-ji, the oldest Shingon temple in Kyushu (it was founded in AD 806).30 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included19: RakusuienA Japanese style garden and tea house where you can enjoy traditional Japanese Matcha (green tea) and sweets for only 500 yen. It is dedicated to the God of Learning and as such is busy all through the year with many student visitors coming here to pray for upcoming success in their educational endeavors, especially during examination time at various periods during the year.
6000 or so Plum Trees have been planted on the site and they begin to bloom around early February to early March. Of course the Cherry Blossoms are also unique to the area and it must be added that during Autumn the leaf changing season of the incredible beautiful Japanese Maple Trees are exceptional and worth a to visit the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in mid to late November.
The entrance to the shrine is a long street lined with small stalls filled with local specialities, a variety of food and drinks and of course many different types of souvenirs that one can take back home after their travels in Japan.45 minutes -Admission Ticket Free2: Nanzoin TempleSituated in the remote countryside on the outskirts of Fukuoka City, is one of the most remarkable places you will find called Nanzoin Temple. I have been to hundreds of ho hum temples all over Japan but without a doubt this location has been absolutely the most amazing place you could hope to visit.
The Nanzoin Temple is home to the largest reclining buddha in Japan and possibly the world. The actual dimensions of the statue are 41 metres long by 11 metres in height and it weighs in at 300 tons, so as you can see, it isn't small!
A Reclining Buddha is a relatively rare site in Japan as most are sitting or standing. Sitting indicates that the Buddha is meditating whilst the reclining pose represents the fact that the Buddha is just about to die and enter the state of Nirvana. This state is much more common in South East Asian countries such as Thailand and Laos, so we have discovered a rare find here in the rural confines of Fukuoka.45 minutes -Admission Ticket Included3: Costco Wholesale Hisayama WarehouseFirstly, just to let you know I am a huge fan of Costco. I have been a member for at least 20 years and there aren't enough superlatives to describe how impressed I am with their level of service, quality and range of products and obviously value for money. In fact, I honestly doubt that I would still be in Japan after all this time if Costco wasn't accessible to me on a regular occasion.
So, if I am an absolute fan, then I have come to the conclusion that others must be in the same boat as myself. Therefore I have decided to make a Costco visit an option on the Private Tours that I perform as Shore Excursions and Day Tours in Fukuoka.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free4: ICHIRAN no Mori ItoshimaEveryone loves Ramen! It is the lifeblood of Fukuoka and most of Japan to tell you the truth. Ichiran Ramen is originally from Fukuoka and has been exported all over the world.
The Tonkotsu (Pork Bone) broth is to die for and a local speciality!
You can also learning about the manufacturing process and see noodles being made in front of your eyes.
They have a small museum and a gift shoip to take some authentic product home with you for friends and family!
45 minutes -Admission Ticket Free5: Sakurai FutamigauraCouples Rock is connected by a large Shimenawa (rope) which is 30 metres in length and weighs 1 tonne. The male rock is 11.8 metres high and the female rock is 11.2 metres in height. Shimenawa is a thick, twisted, straw rope that in ancient times, was believed to have the power to ward off evil sprits or was used to cordon off sacred area as a talisman and as a result many objects connected with Shinto Shrines are decorated with these types of ropes.
A beautiful location worth visiting, on a nice day of course!30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free6: Suginoya BreweryEvery now and then you come upon a special place that instantly makes a strong and lasting impression on you. Suginoya Sake Brewery is just one of these places and as a resultt we make this location a regular attraction on our tours. Each member of the tour will be given a voucher to choose beer, Japanese rice wine, various liqueurs or a non alcoholic drink and of course you are welcome to buy more samples out of your own pocket.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free7: Imazu Genkoborui BulwarkStarting in the 13th century, the tribes of Mongolia succeeded in creating the largest empire in human history, which stretched from the Sea of Japan to Europe. In 1271, Kublai Khan renamed his empire the Yuan, and he sent an expeditionary force to invade Japan in 1274. Unfortunately for him, the invasion was unsuccessful. After this, the Kamakura Shogunate ordered its retainers in Kyushu to build a stone barricade in case of another Mongolian invasion.
Most of the stones that were used in the Mongolian Invasion were transported to be used for the construction of the Fukuoka Castle and these stones can still be seen today at the remains of Fukuoka Castle.
This is an amazing part of Japanese history in the fact that were able to keeping the rampaging Mongolians at bay (many say the 1281 Typhoon was a divine hand by the Japanese god`s to protect their lands) has resulted in the Japan we see and love today. If these efforts had been in vain, Japan would be a much different country today and one that maybe doesn`t speak Japanese?25 minutes -Admission Ticket Free8: Yusentei ParkYusentei Park located in the middle of Fukuoka City is in a nutshell a rare find of a location that will tick all your Japanese Cultural boxes. So many things, quintessentially Japanese that you will be constantly held in amazement and culturally in a head spin. I have lived in Japan for nearly 15 years now and I am still bewildered that it took me this long to find a place like this!
Yusentei Park was first built in 1754 as a place of relaxation for a local Lord. After many years and a complete restoration it was opened to the public as the first Japanese Gardens within the Fukuoka City area. In modern times it has become a designated tourist spot with thousands of Japanese and international visitors alike, receiving calmness and peacefulness within its various activities and views to be enjoyed by all.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Included9: Hakata Port TowerThe Hakata Port Tower is not a one dimensional destination in any sense of the word. Literally, there is something here for everyone. Of course the main reason that people come is for the view and the experience of seeing nearly every part of Fukuoka City and its outlying areas. Not only can you see the Fukuoka Dome and Hilton Seahawk Hotel up come and personal but other areas are also easy to be spotted including the Airport, Hakata Station, the nearby Marinoa City Outlet Mall and its massive Ferris Wheel. In total, more than a dozen easily recognized landmarks can be spotted in an extremely short period of time.40 minutes -Admission Ticket IncludedADDITIONAL INFOInfants are required to sit on an adults lapTravelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitnessNot wheelchair accessibleThis tour/activity will have a maximum of 15 travelersCANCELLATION POLICYAll sales are final. It is only located approximately an hours drive from Fukuoka City and when combined with other great attractions in the area makes for a spectacular day out.
40 minutes -Admission Ticket Free2: Karatsu CastleOne of the most amazing locations in all of Kyushu is without a doubt the Karatsu Castle. It is located on an island overlooking the Karatsu Bay with the Black Pine Forests of Niji no Matsubara in close proximity. Everything about this place screams Japanese! The history, the culture the architecture and of course its purpose, to crush any uprising and discontent in the ranks of its people and rival factions.55 minutes -Admission Ticket Included3: Shida-yaki Pottery Factory MuseumA famous pottery region in Kyushu that still remains and now is used predominately to educate the public about the history of their works. They provide pottery classes to people of all ages to promote the cultural aspect of ceramic making.50 minutes -Admission Ticket Included4: Yutoku Inari ShrineOne of the 4 main Inari Shrines located in Japan. Everything about this place scream Japanese with history and culture everywhere. An amazing location that is enjoyed by all.40 minutes -Admission Ticket Free5: Sachihime Sake BreweryA Sake Brewery is one of the most popular stops on our Day Tours out of Fukuoka. Why is this? Well, it all about the tradition of the Sake Brewing process, exploring the old but esthetically pleasing building as well as the tasting experience that gets everyone fully involved in the process.
40 minutes -Admission Ticket Free6: Oouo ShrineThe Shrine has 3 Torii gates that are strategically placed from the shoreline out into the picturesque and highly productive seaweed producing Ariake Sea. At high tide all 3 gates are covered with water at various depths, whilst at low tide one can wander around and fully inspect each Torii Gate and get a feel of what a 6 meter tidal range really means from an environmental and nature point of view.
20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free7: Fruits Bus StopAs you drive from one bus stop to the next, you will wonder what fruit or vegetable will come next. In some ways, when you don't see your favorite one you wonder why it hasn't been included and of course when you have passed the last one and headed into the next prefecture you will also have a slight feeling of disappointment that you won't see another one again in Japan.20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free8: Spectacles Bridge (Meganebashi)The Spectacle Bridge in Isahaya is a double arch stone bridge spanning a pond at Isahaya Park, which is one of the main sightseeing places of the area. The bridge is twice the size of the famous Spectacles Bridge in Nagasaki City and has many temples and shrines as well as walking trails that you could easily spend 1 or 2 hours here soaking up the ambiance.
The bridge was originally built over the Honmyo River in 1839. However, after the flood of 1957, it was relocated to the park. Every year on the anniversary of the flood, the city of Isahaya has a festival at the original location of the bridge. It was designated as an Important Cultural Asset in 1958.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free9: Nagasaki Atomic Bomb MuseumThe Atomic Bomb Museum in Nagasaki is located in the park above the epicenter. It's exhibits show the overwhelming destruction caused by the bombing while also telling us the importance of world peace and the removal of weapons to protect the Earth from something like this ever happening again!
It is a very sobering place and definitely not for the faint hearted as the stories, exhibits and pictures are extremely graphic. There hasn't been a time when I haven't seen someone crying out loud and or emotionally uncontrollable. This museum definitely isn't every one's cup of tea. However, it is important to remember history and not to forget about the past as this is the way we don't make the same mistakes of the past. So, in that sense the museum can be a great place to come together and never let this happen again for the benefit of mankind.
45 minutes -Admission Ticket Included10: Nagasaki Peace ParkOf course the normal view of the Nagasaki Peace Park main statue is a powerful one, undeniably a moving experience and packed with sorrow but at the same time hope for the future. The reverse side however holds all the above but also in addition there is a feeling of doubt that mankind and humanity can actually learn from its mistakes and not go down that narrow windy path of devastation that the nuclear arms race has headed in the past and still does to some degree in this age of the 21st century.
45 minutes -Admission Ticket Free11: Inasayama Observation DeckThe Mount Inasa Nightview in Nagasaki is a unbelievable place to visit. The daytime views are in a world of there own but in relation to the nighttime view it rates rather poorly in my opinion. Words don't explain this incredible place like the way they should and this view needs to be seen to be believed. Without a doubt one of the most scenic views in all of Nagasaki and probably in all of Japan. It is a place that I try to bring every visitor and customer that comes to Nagasaki as it really brings out the highlights of everything Nagasaki has to offer in terms of beauty and nature from its scenic location to its panorama.
35 minutes -Admission Ticket IncludedADDITIONAL INFOInfants and small children can ride in a pram or strollerSpecialized infant seats are availableNot recommended for travelers with spinal injuriesNot recommended for pregnant travelersNot recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular healthSuitable for all physical fitness levelsTravel time is included in the tour duration. Not wheelchair accessibleThis tour/activity will have a maximum of 6 travelersCANCELLATION POLICYAll sales are final.
