The houses were built during the Edo Period (16031867) and were relocated from their original locations to create the museum in 1971. In a village-like atmosphere, the museum features buildings such as the former village head's house, logging huts, storehouses, and a number of gassho-zukuri farmhouses. These massive farmhouses are named after their steep thatched roofs, which resemble a pair of hands joined in prayer ("gassho"). They were moved here from nearby Shirakawago, where gassho-zukuri houses are the reason for the region's World Heritage status.1 hour -Admission Ticket Free5: Takayama JinyaBecause of its valuable timber resources, the Hida Region around Takayama was put under direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1692. The Takayama Jinya served as the local government office, headed by officials dispatched from Edo (present-day Tokyo). The building complex was in official use until 1969 and is now open to the public as a museum. It includes various nicely maintained tatami mat rooms that once served as offices, conference rooms, guest rooms, and residential spaces. There is also an interesting interrogation room. Beside the main building stands a large storehouse, built in the 1600s. Known as the biggest traditional rice storehouse in Japan, it now functions as a museum, showcasing the belongings and official documents of past feudal lords, old maps of the Hida Region, and historic town plans.1 hour -Admission Ticket Free6: KamisannomachiKamisannomachi, area is popular for its charming ambiance, with narrow streets lined with willow trees and iconic structures like latticed windows and wooden facades. Shirayama Hime Shrine is one of the oldest in Japan, having been used as a site to worship Mt. Haku for about 2100 years.
The shrine itself is famous for its sacred water, its blessings for couples, and being known as the start of the historic pilgrimage to the mountaintop. That pilgrimage was first done nearly 1300 years ago.
Alongside the Shinto goddess of marriage, the progenitor gods Izanagi and Izanami are also enshrined here, so you may wish to pray at the shrine or collect a goshuin to commemorate your visit.40 minutes -Admission Ticket Free2: Tedori GorgeLeaving the shrine, we will take a quick detour to the Tedori Gorge, an 8km stretch first formed more than 23 million years ago. Haku rising up over the river.20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: Hakusan Shirakawa-go White RoadIt's now time for the main attraction of the day: the White Road. Hopping back on the bus, we'll start our journey through the mountains. As we drive, the rice paddies will turn to mountain roads twisting higher and higher. Keep your eyes peeled as we go, as there's always a chance to see snow monkeys, particularly after a heavy rain.

Amaharashi Coast & Shokawa Cruise from Kanazawa
- Type:Day Trips and Excursions
- Duration:8 Hours
OVERVIEWToyama Bay is famed for its fresh seafood and impressive mountains that overlook it. The Northern Japanese Alps that surround the bay include many great sights, such as the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route, the Kurobe Gorge and even Gokayama, but the mountain range itself is amazing to view from afar. This tour includes visiting Amaharashi, one of the most famous spots for seeing the snow covered mountains. It will also head into the city of Takaoka to see the Big Buddha there. There are many excellent options for food in the area, too! Finally, the tour heads into the mountains for a short cruise on the Shokawa River. The valley is stunning and excellent in most seasons: snow in the winter, vivid green and cool in the summer and red leaves in the autumn. If you want to get a taste of both the sea and mountain scenic sights of Japan, this tour is perfect for you!INCLUDESEnglish speaking guideTransportation to and from Amaharashi, Takaoka Big Buddha and the Shokawa CruiseGuided Tour at Amaharashi, Takaoka Big Buddha and during the Shokawa CruiseShokawa Cruise Roundtrip TicketFree time at Amaharashi, Takaoka and during the Shokawa CruiseEXCLUDESLunchAccommodationShinkansen/Transportation to Kanazawa Station start pointMEETING AND PICKUPMeeting pointKanazawa StationThe meetup point is opposite the Shinkansen ticket gates, in front of the information displaying the four sumo wrestlers. The first was as a famous poet passed through the area and wrote about its beauty in the Man'yoshi, the most famous anthology of poetry in Japanese history. A general and his troops also came through the area, sheltering in the rocks on the coast which can still be seen to this day. The view here is absolutely stunning with the small island in front of the snow-capped mountains of the Central Japan Alps. Here you will have some time to walk around and see the coast from a few different angles and even can shop a bit at the tourist information center across the street. After enjoying this area, we will go where most visitors don't, further up the coast to check out a few more spots!1 hour -Admission Ticket Free3: TakaokaNearby is the historical city of Takaoka which is rich in traditions and interesting architecture. It is here that the tour will first go before allowing you to walk around the city and discover for yourself. This is also the time to find lunch. There are a variety of restaurants in the area so walk around and check them out!
It's then a 40 minute drive to the Shokawa River Cruise.2 hours -Admission Ticket Free4: Sh RiverOnce lunch is finished and the group is back together, we will head towards the final destination of the day, the Shokawa Valley and cruise! That same service is available today with the Shokawa Cruise that you will experience! The entire boat ride takes about an hour and ten minutes where you can see the beautiful mountains of the area. There are two amazing red bridges that cross the river, waterfalls everywhere and an onsen hanging over the water. On the boat itself there is an outdoor second floor and a heated/air-conditioned first floor, so you can enjoy the ride however you want!

This route stretches across a mountain range and goes over magnificent gorges, charming lakes and seemingly endless highlands. During the winter time this area is transformed into a white paradise, with snows walls that can stretch as high as 20 meters(60 feet). On this tour you will ride one of our company buses to get to Murodo, where you can walk along this snow wall and enjoy the other winter sights in the area. On the way there, we will have a brief stop in Ashikuraji, the traditional start of the climb to Mt. Tateyama. Learn about how people viewed heaven and hell and this mountains role in those. OVERVIEWOften overlooked when travelers head along the Sea of Japan, Fukui is another one of Japans prefectures that has as much history and natural beauty as any other. As the entrance to the Hokuriku region, Fukui has served as a crossroads for many important wars and trade routes throughout Japanese history. This tour will have you walk by the castle and also a temple where buildings form the former castle were moved, get stunning views of the modern city skyline from a hill with over a thousand years of history and dive into one of the head temples of Zen Buddhism in an idyllic mountain setting. Lets dive deep into lesser traveled area of Japan that leave you wanting to come back to Fukui for more.INCLUDESEnglish speaking guideEntry fee at Eiheiji TempleGuided Tour at Zuigenjis castle rooms, Eiheiji Temple and other locationsTransportation to and from Fukui Station(Kanazawa Start), Eiheiji and the local Fukui busEXCLUDESLunchMEETING AND PICKUPMeeting pointKanazawa StationThe meetup point is outside of the Shinkansen ticket gates, in front of the information center. Arrive at Fukui Station and start the tour by walking around the station to find all the interesting dinosaur statues and art. We will then depart to see the castle walls and bridge before stopping over at the "rainbow" shrine.

The walls are original to the construction but there is also a bridge that faithfully reproduces what it looked like during the Edo period. There wasnt a keep for many years so instead the gates around the castle were reinforced to act as the final line of defense, making it unique among castles in Japan.
A short walk away from the castle is a shrine that has recently become popular because of the origami cranes that are hung at the entrance. It is a striking visual to imbue hope for a better future. Following the shrine is a walk and a short bus ride to a slightly different part of the city.1 hour 30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: AtagozakaThe final stop before lunch is the Atagozaka or the Atago Slope. This is a series of staircases that lead up to the top of a large series of hills. The brand-new buildings against the mountains in the background is really beautiful.
Coming down from the viewpoint, we will head towards the Katamachi area near the station where you will have time for lunch. Feel free to ask your guide for recommendations. The local specialties in Fukui City are Echizen soba and katsu(fried port cutlet).
1 hour -Admission Ticket Free4: Daihonzan Eihei-ji TempleIt's time for lunch! Feel free to ask your guide for recommendations for local Fukui specialties.

We will have the chance to walk around the temple and you can learn about the history and importance of this Buddhist sect and this temple in particular. You will also have some time to explore at your own pace as well.
After getting a taste of Zen in its Japanese homeland, we will head back to the hustle and bustle of city life. Getting on a direct bus back to Fukui Station will take just under 30 minutes, where we will leave our friends staying in Fukui, and then the train to Kanazawa should get us back home by 18:00.4 hours -Admission Ticket IncludedADDITIONAL INFOInfants and small children can ride in a pram or strollerPublic transportation options are available nearbyInfants are required to sit on an adults lapSuitable for all physical fitness levelsAll listed events, activities, and experiences are subject to availability. Opened to the public in 1871, Kenrokuen features a variety of flowering trees which provide the garden with a different look for each season.1 hour -Admission Ticket Not Included2: D. T. Suzuki MuseumThe D.T. Suzuki Museum (, Suzuki Daisetsu Kan) is a small museum commemorating the life and works of Suzuki Daisetz Teitaro (1870-1966), a prominent Buddhist philosopher. The museum was opened in 2011 in the district of Kanazawa where Suzuki was born, a ten minute walk from Kenrokuen. On display are exhibitions showcasing the writings of D.T. Suzuki which allow the visitor to learn more about his life and philosophy. In addition, the architecture of the museum serves as an interpretation of D.T. Suzuki's life and religious scholarship; its use of clean, simple lines and open spaces causes visitors to pause and reflect.1 hour -Admission Ticket Not Included3: Myoryuji - Ninja TempleMyoryuji Temple (, Myryji), commonly known as Ninjadera ("Ninja Temple"), was built by the Maeda lords, rulers over the region during the Edo Period. While not actually associated with ninja, the temple earned its nickname because of its many deceptive defences.
Since the shogun imposed strict building restrictions as one way of weakening his regional lords, Myoryuji was designed to circumvent the restrictions and serve as a disguised military outpost. It was built with considerable defences and escape routes, so that its defenders could alert the castle in the event of an attack.1 hour -Admission Ticket Not Included4: Higashi Chaya DistrictA chaya (lit. teahouse) is an exclusive type of restaurant where guests are entertained by geisha who perform song and dance. During the Edo Period, chaya were found in designated entertainment districts, usually just outside the city limits. Kanazawa has three, well preserved chaya districts, Higashi Chayagai (Eastern Chaya District), Nishi Chayagai (Western Chaya District) and Kazuemachi.1 hour -Admission Ticket Free5: 21st Century Museum of Contemporary ArtThe 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (21, Kanazawa Nijichiseiki Bijutsukan) opened in 2004 in downtown Kanazawa, just a few steps from Kenrokuen. It exhibits works of acclaimed contemporary artists from Japan and all over the world, and is among Japan's most popular art museums.
The architecture of the 21st Century Museum is unique and distinguishes it from other museums and buildings around Kanazawa. The museum is comprised of a circular building, 112.5 meters in diameter, with no facade or main entrance. It was designed without a front or back to discourage its patrons from approaching the museum, and consequently its art, from only one direction.1 hour -Admission Ticket Not Included6: Seisonkaku VillaThe Seisonkaku Villa (, Seisonkaku) was built in the last years of the Edo Period by a Maeda lord for his mother. It is one of the most elegant, remaining samurai villas in Japan.
Located in the southeast corner of Kenrokuen, Seisonkaku is a large structure with a number of expansive tatami rooms on two floors. One of its interesting features is the roof which covers its garden viewing deck. It was built without supports that would interrupt the view of the garden.1 hour -Admission Ticket Not Included7:Nagamachi () was a samurai district located at the foot of the former Kanazawa Castle, where samurai and their families used to reside. The area preserves a historic atmosphere with its remaining samurai residences, earthen walls, private entrance gates, narrow lanes and water canals.
One of the main attractions of the district is the centrally located Nomura-ke, a restored samurai residence displaying the lifestyle and artifacts of the era when samurai were prosperous. In contrast is the Shinise Kinenkan Museum, a restored pharmacy displaying the lives of the merchant class which rose in prosperity as the samurai declined.1 hour -Admission Ticket Free8: Omicho MarketOmicho Market (, mich Ichiba) has been Kanazawa's largest fresh food market since the Edo Period. Today, it is a busy and colorful network of covered streets lined by about 200 shops and stalls. While most shops specialize in the excellent local seafood and produce, you can also find flowers, clothing, kitchen tools and more on sale.
Although the market is most exciting during the morning hours, it also gets quite busy around noon, when tourists and locals arrive to have lunch at restaurants inside the market. It is not unusual for lines to build in front of the popular restaurants, many of which specialize in rice bowls topped with fresh Kanazawa seafood.1 hour -Admission Ticket Free9: Kanazawa CastleFrom 1583 to the end of the Edo Period, Kanazawa Castle (, Kanazawaj) was the seat of the powerful Maeda Clan, lords of Kaga, a feudal domain ranking second only to the Tokugawa possesions in terms of size and wealth.
The castle burnt down several times over the centuries, and the most recent fires of 1881 were survived only by two storehouses and the Ishikawa-mon Gate. The gate dates from 1788 and faces Kenrokuen. For several decades, Kanazawa University occupied the former castle grounds until the campus was moved to the city's outskirts in the early 1990s. Since then, a project is underway to rebuild the castle's former buildings. In the meantime, most central structures are standing again and make a visit more interesting.1 hour -Admission Ticket Not Included10: Kanazawa City Nishi Chaya MuseumA chaya (, lit. teahouse) is an exclusive type of restaurant where guests are entertained by geisha who perform song and dance. Kanazawa has three well preserved chaya districts, Higashi Chayagai (Eastern Chaya District), Nishi Chayagai (Western Chaya District) and Kazuemachi. Each of the three districts has its own charms and mix of shops, cafes and chaya restaurants.
The Nishi Chaya District (, Nishi Chayagai), is a compact area just a short walk from the Ninja Temple. It is much smaller and quieter than the Higashi Chayagai and has just one attraction open to the public: a museum, the Nishi Chaya Shiryokan, which displays the history of the district and is a meeting place for free tours of the area (Japanese only).1 hour -Admission Ticket Not Included11: Oyama ShrineOyama Shrine (, Oyama Jinja) is dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the powerful, local Maeda Clan. The shrine was constructed in 1599 by Toshiie's successor, Maeda Toshinaga on Mount Utatsu. It was later moved to its present location.
Oyama Shrine is known for its unusual gate, which was designed by a Dutch architect, using elements of European and Asian religious themes. While the first story displays a mixture of Japanese and Chinese influence, the upper stories once served as a lighthouse and feature a Dutch style, stained glass window.1 hour -Admission Ticket Not IncludedADDITIONAL INFOService animals allowedPublic transportation options are available nearbyInfants and small children can ride in a pram or strollerAll areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessibleTransportation options are wheelchair accessibleWheelchair accessibleSuitable for all physical fitness levelsThis is a walking tour.
