WHAT TO EXPECT

Experience "Japanese calligraphy" and "tea ceremony" at a "kominka", a Japanese traditional farmhouse, in Nagoya Japan.

1. History Commentary about the Sengoku Period

If you have a basic knowledge about history, your understanding of Japanese culture will be deeper. You will listen to commentary for about 15 minutes with an easy-to-understand slide show about Nagoya in the Sengoku period.

2. Japanese Calligraphy Experience

Drip some water on the inkstone and rub down an ink-stick slowly. You will concentrate with the unique smell of the ink in the quiet atmosphere. After learning the basics of Japanese calligraphy such as how to hold and move the brush, you will select symbols with your favorite meaning and designs among samples. When you write on the clean copy, the clean copy of your work will be framed as a souvenir for a wonderful experience of Japanese calligraphy.

3. Tea Ceremony Experience

Then, move to the tea room and we will explain about the tea room setting and utensils. First, please try the Matcha tea as a guest which is served by the host. When you get used to the atmosphere, lets try to serve tea yourself. Calm your mind and feel the spirit of tea ceremony.

1: Hikone Castle

Our first stop of the tour is Hikone Castleone of the best-preserved castles in Japan and a National Treasure. It is one of only twelve original castles left from the Edo-era. A number of its buildings have been designated Important Cultural Properties.

Your guide will lead you through the castle grounds and into the keep, explaining unique features of the castle along the way.

2: Genkyuen

Well then have time for a relaxing stroll through Genkyu-en Garden. The garden, designed to resemble a palace garden from China, features a central pond with walking trails and offers incredible views of the castle.

Youll have the opportunity to taste Matcha tea and a traditional Japanese sweet in a teahouse that was once used to entertain the castle lords guests.

3: Yume Kybashi Castle Road

Our next stop will be Yume Kyobashi Castle Road, a popular shopping street with black fences and white-washed walls. Here you will have time for lunch and a bit of shopping. The region is famous for premium wagyu, and plenty of shops sell the delicacy prepared as croquettes, skewers, hot pots, and more. Feel free to ask your guide for recommendations, or let your nose lead the way. But dont forget to leave room for dessert later on in the tour!

4: Omihachiman

We will make our way to the canal district of Omi Hachiman where you can cruise the historic waterways while taking in the picturesque views of the castle town.

Movie lovers may find the sights familiar as this location is often used in historical dramas and films. Of course, your guide will be available to help you take photos that will make your friends and family envious.

Please note, the boat tour may be canceled due to the weather. Additionally, we can not guarantee a seat on the boat tour for guests who book this tour less than one week in advance.

From here, we will return to the tour bus and head back to your meeting point to say our goodbyes there.

5: La Collina Omihachiman

Our last stop will be La Collina. This confectionary shop is part nature preserve and part theme park. Its surrounded by nature and serves up a wide variety of popular seasonal confections.

Originally a bakery, the owners developed a deep appreciation for natural ingredients and thus decided to turn their shop into a nature preserve where they could grow their own ingredients and be in tune with the seasons. The shop has been described as Ghibli-like in appearance and is a great location for photography lovers. Of course, the desserts are not to be missed either.

After arriving at Ghibli Park, enjoy your time on your own in the park. There is a designated entry time for Ghibli's Grand Warehouse. Admission time is 10:00-10:59. 1: Nakasendo Tsumagojuku

After a quick stop at a roadside rest stop to stretch our legs, we will arrive at Tsumago-juku post town. Here your guide will explain the history and significance of the area and the Nakasendo trail before setting off on our hike.

2: Nakasendo Tsumagojuku

We will then set off on our hike down the Nakasendo trailone of five ancient roads connecting the de facto capital of Edo (Tokyo) with other regions in Japan. The trail was most prominent during the Edo era. Today, most of the original Nakasendo has been lost to time or converted into modern highways and railway lines. However, the section of the trail we will hike remains relatively unchanged from the time of the samurai. You will even see segments of the trail with original cobblestone. The hike will also take you by two waterfallsthe perfect place to catch your breath, feel the cool mist on your face, and stop for lunch. Recharged, we will continue our hike past a lone teahouse run by a local volunteer. Youre welcome to stop here for a sip of tea or exchange stories with other travelers.

3: Nakasendo Magome-juku

At the end of the trek, you will arrive at the beautiful post town of Magome. Situated on a slope, this town offers stunning views of the surrounding mountain scenery and features a main street lined with traditional wooden buildings. Even better, there are waterways on either side of the street, and the fast-running water powers multiple waterwheels. The post town features many shops, selling popular local crafts and snacks such as oyaki dumplings, gohei-mochi rice cakes, and ice cream. We recommend looking for some of the wood crafts made from local trees, many of which are extremely fragrant and, just as importantly, small and easy to carry back home. Of course, your guide will be available to help you take photos that will make your friends and family envious.

Nagoya Castle is right in the heart of Nagoya, and is very famous for its golden shachihoko (a mythical creature with a tiger's head and carp's body) figures on the roof. Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun who established the Edo shougunate, built it in 1521. The main part of the castle was rebuilt after the war, and now you can climb to the top to feel like being a shogun to govern the country.

Atsuta Jingu Shrine is the second highest rank shrine of Japan, founded in the 8th century. 13: Shikemichi

Shikemichi is a town of merchants located on the west bank of Horikawa River that goes through the castle town of Nagoya. This town was built in 1610, when the whole town of Kiyosu moved to the site with the construction of Nagoya Castle. "Shikemichi" means an about 7 meter-wide street, and the name is derived from the fact that the street's width was expanded for fire protection and for the commercial activities after an inferno occurred in 1700. Storehouses are built on the stone walls and traditional townhouses stand in a row. The landscape as we know it today was completed in the Genbun era (around 1740). It was designated as a townscape preservation area of Nagoya in 1986.

Nagoya Castle is right in the heart of Nagoya, and is very famous for its golden shachihoko (a mythical creature with a tiger's head and carp's body) figures on the roof. Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun who established the Edo shougunate, built it in 1521. The main part of the castle was rebuilt after the war, and now you can climb to the top to feel like being a shogun to govern the country.

This tour is your opportunity to really get to know the Osu Shopping District. And not the typical superficial visit everyone else does.

Meet your guide at the popular Osu Kannon and start by recognizing the differences between a Shinto shrine and a Buddhist temple. Something many of you have probably wondered about.

Start snacking on delicious Miso Kushi Katsu, skewered meat with a hearty red Miso sauce.

Next, you will try another Miso snack, Gohei Mochi, grilled rice on a stick covered in Miso sauce. You will also try Karaage at one of the best shops selling the popular street food in Osu. Later, youll visit a popular local shop and try their Tenmusu.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This market tour involves a tour of the local supermarket where locals generally shop. Akiko will accompany you to a local supermarket located near the JR station. After you meet Akiko at the station she will take you the local supermarket, where she will show and describe the different ingredients used in Japanese cooking and seasoning. If you like, Akiko can help you purchase local ingredients that you can take back home from Japan.

After Akiko picks you up from JR Kasugai station, 20 minutes from Nagoya. You will join her in her homer kitchen to make classic Nagoya dishes. In your hands-on cooking class in Nagoya learn to make shrimp tempura in a rice ball or fried chicken Nagoya style and miso pork cutlet sandwich. You will also learn how to make dashi stock from scratch for the miso soup. Your cooking class will last about an hour before you sit down to share the Nagoyan style Japanese meal you helped prepare.
