Washoku was added to the UNESCO Heritage list.
You can learn about Washoku from Yuki who is an experienced decorative sushi roll instructor. She has appeared on TV many times because she is popular.
In 2024, Portland, Oregon, USA and Sapporo Hokkaido celebrated the 65th anniversary of their sister city partnership. The welcoming celebration was held at a hotel in Sapporo, where she demonstrated and served Decorative sushi rolls to the mayors of both cities.

We welcome international guests to our Sushi Roll Preparation School in Sapporo. At our hands-on workshop you will learn how to cook decorative sushi rolls.
When you return to your home country why not impress your friends?

We have 3 teachers.
Satomi and Yui learned this artistic sushi rolling technique from Yuki.
We are all professional sushi rolling instructors.
Prices vary depending on the teacher. You're lucky if there's a discount!

If you book Yuki's class, the meeting place is the bus stop Ishiyamahigashi 7 chome . (There is a parking space on her property, so you are welcome to come by car also.)

If you book Satomi's class at the cafe, please take a street car to come there. The nearest station is Nishisen 9jyo asahiyama koendori. Satomi would pick you up this station if you require. The cafe's name is "Piano Piano cafe & studio".

If you book Yui's class or SNACK experience, come to the convenient Susukino area. They are held in New Bimatu building, a 3-minutes walk from Susukino subway station. The meeting point is the entrance of the building.

WHAT TO EXPECT

At our hands-on workshop you will learn how to cook decorative sushi rolls.
You can take away your sushi rolls after the class.

You will get English instruction and ingredients, apron rental free, and recipes in English in your class.
If you have any special dietary concerns ( food allergies, Vegan and Vegetarian etc.) please inform us in advance.

Soranuma-dake, standing at 1,251 meters, is a day hike near Sapporo, offering panoramic views and a chance to escape into nature. The trailhead begins at a quarry and leads through lush forests to two rustic huts by a serene pond, perfect for a rest. The ascent, taking approximately four hours, rewards hikers with stunning vistas of Sapporo city, Lake Shikotsu, and the surrounding mountains. With a total distance of 17.5 kilometers and a moderate difficulty rating, this hike is best enjoyed from May to late November, when the trail has less snow.
A more challenging day hike is to Jozankei Tengu dake. This ancient volcano, standing at 1145 meters, has been sculpted into a series of rugged summits, surrounded by cliffs, offering hikers a challenging experience. The ascent begins with a walk beside a river, followed by a steep climb aided by ropes, leading to a narrow ridge with breathtaking views as. The best time to visit is from May to late November, when the trail is most accessible.

From spring through autumn, poppies, babys breath, and various other colorful flowers decorate the fields, offering a fresh scenery and scent with every visit. Tucked away deep in the forest, this mysterious ponds water isnt clear but has a milky blue glow that changes color daily depending on sunlight and weather. On sunny days, it shines a bright turquoise; on cloudy days, it shifts to a deep cobalt blue. When the wind is still, dead trees reflect on the waters surface, creating a magical scene.
Although the Blue Pond is an artificial reservoir created as part of volcanic disaster prevention works related to Mt. Tokachi, its beauty feels like a natural miracle.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Channel your inner cowboy on a 2.5- or 3-hour horseback-riding trip through the scenic mountain countryside near Sapporo. Begin your horseback riding adventure with a pickup in the early morning in Sapporo by taxi, taking a 40-minute drive to the ride starting point to arrive in the morning. Start your excursion at Mustang Town, a simulated Old West village complete with all the typical structures of a Hollywood-style cowboy town.

Upon arrival at the Nopporo Forest Park, youre fitted with a mountain bike, helmet and gloves. Once you receive safety precautions and instructions on basic mountain biking skills, follow your guide along a mostly dirt road on a loop trail through pristine flatland forest.

Cycle past old-growth trees, where you may spot deer, squirrels, Japanese hares, Hokkaido salamanders, and native foxes, among other critters, that inhabit the wildlife sanctuary. After lunch, by subway and bus we will visit Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium. Otaru City's historical buildings of the early 20th century are now used as various resources for tourism. The Otaru Art Base located opposite the Otaru Canal across Rinkosen Street is one such facility. There are four historical buildings where 20 of the largest banks in Hokkaido were gathered, formerly the center of Hokkaido's economy known as "North Wall Street."

What was the former Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru Branch as seen in the picture is now home to the Nitori Museum of Art, and includes displays such as Japanese and foreign paintings, wood carvings, and more. In the basement you will find the Art Nouveau Art Déco Glass Gallery.

3: Otaru Sakaimachi Street

If you're travelling for pleasure, then you'll want to enjoy gourmet and shopping. Both can be done at Otaru's Sakaimachi Dori Shopping Street, located on the inland side of Rinkosen Street, parallel to the Otaru Canal. It is a one-way street that stretches about 900 meters from North Wall Street to the Marchen Crossroads where you will find the Bank of Japan Otaru Branch. Both sides of the street are lined with old merchant shops and Western-style buildings. Nearby to the Otaru Canal, it is another very popular tourist spot.

4: Tanaka Sake Brewing Kikkogura

Otaru may be known for its nostalgic influence of historic Western buildings and glass crafts, but there is also a spot that conveys the history of Japan from long ago. One of these places is the Tanaka Sake Brewery, founded in 1899. Many types of alcoholic beverages are manufactured here, including plum wine, sweet sake, and of course the beloved local sake of Otaru, Takaragawa. Because the cool climate of Otaru allows for the manufacture of sake year-round, the Tanaka Sake Brewery Kikkougura is a great place to visit at any time of the year.

5: Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway Ski Museum

Anyone can enjoy strolling the various beautiful landscapes of historical Otaru. Overlooking this beautiful seaside city and the Sea of Japan is Mt. Tengu, about 15 minutes by car from the Otaru IC. The Mt. Tengu Ropeway can take you from the foot of the mountain to the very top, a total distance of 735 meters, in about 4 minutes.
From the mountain summit you can even get a great view of the Shakotan Peninsula.

Otaru Canal (Pass by)

The Otaru Canal is a staple when it comes to famous sightseeing spots of Hokkaido. Once the distribution hub of Hokkaido, it boasted a population that even surpassed that of Sapporo. At that time the canal was used to offload ships via barges, and was established to lengthen the distance that goods could be distributed. Eventually the canal was no longer necessary to serve its function once the docks were established and was to be landfilled. However it currently stands as a place for citizens and tourists alike to relax and enjoy with its promenades and gas lamps lighting the riverbanks.

About 5000 years ago, it is said to be a mural painting of the era when Jomon people were in Hokkaido.

The only such building still standing in Japan, the Unjyoya was a commercial building that served as a place for trade between Japanese and the native Ainu people during the Edo Period. This road station offers a wide variety of juices and snacks unique to Yoichi, a town famous for its fruits.
