Don't you just love authentic beautiful Japanese cuisine ' Washoku '?
Washoku was added to the UNESCO Heritage list.
You can learn about Washoku from Yuki who is an experienced decorative sushi roll instructor. She has appeared on TV many times because she is popular.
In 2024, Portland, Oregon, USA and Sapporo Hokkaido celebrated the 65th anniversary of their sister city partnership. The welcoming celebration was held at a hotel in Sapporo, where Yuki demonstrated and served Decorative sushi rolls to the mayors of both cities.

We welcome international guests to our Sushi Roll Preparation School in Sapporo. At our hands-on workshop you will learn how to cook decorative sushi rolls.

Satomi, Tomoko and Yui learned this artistic sushi rolling technique from Yuki.
We are all professional sushi rolling instructors.

If you book Yuki's class, you can get free pick-up service outside Makomanai subway station to and from her workshop. Please let us know at the time of booking if you require.

If you book Satomi's class at the cafe, please take a street car to come there. The nearest station is "Nishisen 9jyo asahiyama koendori". Satomi would pick you up this station if you require. The cafe's name is "Piano Piano cafe & studio".

If you book Tomoko's class, you can get the free pick-up service outside Shinsapporo subway station to and from her workshop. Please let us know at the time of booking if you require.

If you book Yui's class, come to the convenient Susukino area. Her class is held in "New Bimatu building", a 3-minutes walk from Susukino subway station.

Hokkaido boasts the highest production of soba in Japan
You will enjoy making soba noodles, a tradition dating back to the Edo period using high-quality soba noodles.
After the experience, the owner of the restaurant, who is a Japanese chef and a sake brewer, will serve you two types of seasonal sake.

Japanese people have a habit of drinking sake when eating soba.
In Japan, it is called soba-mae.
After enjoying soba-mae, finish off with soba.
It is also common to order tempura as a set with soba.
This combination of tempura, sake, and soba goes very well together, making it a well-balanced dish.

1: Nijo Market

Sapporo Nijo fish market is a public market in central Sapporo that occupies about one city block. Both locals and tourists visit the market to shop for fresh local produce and seafood such as crabs, salmon eggs, sea urchin and various fresh and prepared fish.

The market is open from around 7:00 to around 18:00 on all days of the week, with individual shops maintaining their own opening hours and closing days. Several restaurants can be found among the shops, including a collection of small drinking places and restaurants.

2: Soseigawa Park

Sapporo Sosei river park was created using land opened up through the linking of north- saouth underpasses to join Sosei River's east and west and create a place for people to connect.
The Sosei river area was once a bustling center of activity, with a circus, a year-end market, street vendors, and other shops lining its banks, making it a big part of the lives of the citizens of Sapporo.
Incorporating this history into its design, Sosei river park is a place where one cen enjoy a precious urban riverfront area and the beauty of the four seasons.

3: Sapporo TV Tower

Sapporo TV Tower is a TV and radio broadcasting tower with an observation deck which is located in Sapporos Odori Park. The tower was built in 1957 and is 147 meters high. Sapporo TV Tower was designed by the architect Tachu Naito who also designed a number of other famous towers in Japan, including Tokyo Tower, Nagoya TV Tower, and the Tsutenkaku tower in Osaka. The tower in Sapporo also features large digital clocks on four sides of the tower which were installed at a height of 65 meters in 1961.

4: Odori Park

Odori Park is an oasis in the city center and extends 1.5 km from east to west. The history of Odori Park began in 1871 when it was constructed as a large-scale firebreak to separate the downtown area to the administrative district in the north and the residential and commercial district in the south.

With its development promoted by the growth of the city, the park was later turned into a relaxing space for the citizens as well as a place for international exchange.

Odori Park is recognized both regionally and nationally as a site for major events in Sapporo such as the YOSAKOI Soran festival in early summer, the Beer Garden and the Summer Festival in summer, and the Snow Festival and the White Illumination in winter.

5: Tanukikoji Shopping Street

Tracing its history back to 1869, Tanuki Koji is the oldest shopping district in Hokkaido. The origins of this famous shopping arcade developed organically when stores and restaurants began to spontaneously gather on the spot. Over time, the arcade architecture was constructed to shield shoppers from the elements. Nowadays, the district is almost a kilometer long and boasts over 200 shops lining both sides of the covered shopping area! There is sure to be something for everyone here with restaurants, bars, used clothing shops, souvenir stores, curios, and more. Best of all, the roofed area means you can stay warm and dry while you window shop no matter the time of year.

What to Expect

In the morning, we will drive to Shakotan Penninsula for a walk through some stunning coastal scenery and a chance to take in the famous blue ocean. Its a breathtaking view spot.

Well then have time to try some local seafood for lunch.

After this we will take a leisurely drive to Yoichi Distillery, where the famous Nikka Whiskey is produced. You can hear some explanation about the founder Masataka Taketsurus Scottish inspiration and dream (we can provide translation for the Japanese tour), and then try a sample for yourself (soft-drinks are provided for non-alcohol drinkers and those under 20 years old).

Highest Point: The summit of Jozankei Tengu-dake at 1145 meters.

Sapporo-dake: Views from the summit, enjoy vistas across Sapporo City, Mount Yotei, Muine-yama, and Jozankei-tengu. Diff-5/10.
Soranuma-dake is a great option for a day hike, offering beautiful, forested trails and serene lake views. Diff-3/10.

A more challenging day hike is to Jozankei Tengu dake. WHAT TO EXPECT
Start your mountain bike ride in the morning, approximately one hour after youre picked up by air-conditioned minivan from Sapporo.

Upon arrival at the Nopporo Forest Park, youre fitted with a mountain bike, helmet and gloves. Once you receive safety precautions and instructions on basic mountain biking skills, follow your guide along a mostly dirt road on a loop trail through pristine flatland forest.

Cycle past old-growth trees, where you may spot deer, squirrels, Japanese hares, Hokkaido salamanders, and native foxes, among other critters, that inhabit the wildlife sanctuary. Napporo Forest Park is home to 140 species of birds, including kingfisher and kumagera (black woodpecker), the worlds largest woodpecker with enough beak power to be heard throughout a forest.

Glimpse mountain tracks that experienced racers use for practice, and check out the 60-foot-high (100-meter) Hokkaido Centennial Memorial Tower, where you can enjoy the panoramic view of Sapporo city from outside the observatory.

Your half-day tour ends with the return drive to Sapporo with drop-off at the train station or a nearby hotel.

After leaving your accommodation, you will first visit the famous Nijo Market. This market is popularly known as the kitchen of Sapporo, with the best of seasonal seafood, fruits, and other specialties on display as you walk around.

2: Shiroi Koibito Park

After Nijo market, youll ride the subway to the White Lovers (known in Japanese as Shiroi Koibito) Park. In this theme park, you will find an overflowing of candy charm, plus factory tours and of course the "white lover" confection itself, an institution in Hokkaido. Youll not only enjoy a candy making experience, but also a learning one, specifically about the history of the brand and company, including a display of valuable antique cups. It goes without saying that there will be lots of chances to enjoy the chocolate, be it white, brown, or black.

3: Miyanomori Ski Jump Stadium

After lunch, by subway and bus we will visit Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium. Okurayama is well known as the ski jump venue during the 1972 Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo, but even now many international ski jumping competitions are held. Ride the lift to the 307m summit and admire the city of Sapporo and the Ishikari Plain spreading out before you. During winter, you can enjoy a particularly superb view, with the pure white snow dazzling the scene around you. Beneath the 307m summits observatory is the starting line for the ski jump. Here you can realistically experience the jumpers feeling before they make their run. After enjoying the ski jump stadium, the tour will end with a return to your accommodations. 2: Otaru Art Base

Otaru City's historical buildings of the early 20th century are now used as various resources for tourism. The Otaru Art Base located opposite the Otaru Canal across Rinkosen Street is one such facility. There are four historical buildings where 20 of the largest banks in Hokkaido were gathered, formerly the center of Hokkaido's economy known as "North Wall Street."

What was the former Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru Branch as seen in the picture is now home to the Nitori Museum of Art, and includes displays such as Japanese and foreign paintings, wood carvings, and more. In the basement you will find the Art Nouveau Art Déco Glass Gallery.

3: Otaru Sakaimachi Street

If you're travelling for pleasure, then you'll want to enjoy gourmet and shopping. Both can be done at Otaru's Sakaimachi Dori Shopping Street, located on the inland side of Rinkosen Street, parallel to the Otaru Canal. It is a one-way street that stretches about 900 meters from North Wall Street to the Marchen Crossroads where you will find the Bank of Japan Otaru Branch. Both sides of the street are lined with old merchant shops and Western-style buildings. Nearby to the Otaru Canal, it is another very popular tourist spot.

4: Tanaka Sake Brewing Kikkogura

Otaru may be known for its nostalgic influence of historic Western buildings and glass crafts, but there is also a spot that conveys the history of Japan from long ago. One of these places is the Tanaka Sake Brewery, founded in 1899. Many types of alcoholic beverages are manufactured here, including plum wine, sweet sake, and of course the beloved local sake of Otaru, Takaragawa. Because the cool climate of Otaru allows for the manufacture of sake year-round, the Tanaka Sake Brewery Kikkougura is a great place to visit at any time of the year.

5: Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway Ski Museum

Anyone can enjoy strolling the various beautiful landscapes of historical Otaru. Overlooking this beautiful seaside city and the Sea of Japan is Mt. Tengu, about 15 minutes by car from the Otaru IC. The Mt. Tengu Ropeway can take you from the foot of the mountain to the very top, a total distance of 735 meters, in about 4 minutes.
From the mountain summit you can even get a great view of the Shakotan Peninsula.

Otaru Canal (Pass by)

The Otaru Canal is a staple when it comes to famous sightseeing spots of Hokkaido. Once the distribution hub of Hokkaido, it boasted a population that even surpassed that of Sapporo. At that time the canal was used to offload ships via barges, and was established to lengthen the distance that goods could be distributed. Eventually the canal was no longer necessary to serve its function once the docks were established and was to be landfilled. However it currently stands as a place for citizens and tourists alike to relax and enjoy with its promenades and gas lamps lighting the riverbanks.

6: Fugoppe Cave

About 5000 years ago, it is said to be a mural painting of the era when Jomon people were in Hokkaido.
More than 200 mural paintings carved a mysterious human figure (there are feathers, there is a horn).

7: Old Shimoyoichi Unjoya

The only such building still standing in Japan, the Unjyoya was a commercial building that served as a place for trade between Japanese and the native Ainu people during the Edo Period. Today, the Unjyoya provides an opportunity to learn about business during that period. Designated as a National Historical Site and an Important Cultural Property.

8: Space Apple Yoichi Michi-no-Eki

This road station offers a wide variety of juices and snacks unique to Yoichi, a town famous for its fruits. The most popular items are the handmade apple pies made with apples grown in Yoichi, and the gelato ice cream. Depending on the season, freshly picked fruits and vegetables delivered straight from the farm are available. Taste the local flavors and blow away the fatigue of driving.
