Matamata has a range of activities for everyone and for all of age ranges. From hiking the tallest waterfall in the north island to an escape room to the Firth Tower museum. It is most commonly known for its Hobbiton and Lord of the Rings movie sets. However, there is definitely much more to do in and around Matamata. As a matter of fact, Matamata is a key link in a heritage trail covering western Waikato towns of Te Aroha (historic spa town), Morrinsville and Matamata. Moreover, the amazing Matamata-Piako District Heritage Trail links the towns of Matamata, Te Aroha and Morrinsville and visits quite a variety of places of historical interest on the way.
