This once excellent capital city, masterminded 80 km from Ayutthaya was squashed by the Burmese outfitted power in 1767 and is at present an UNESCO world heritage site. 2: Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit

It's large bronze seated Buddha image or Phra Mongkhon Bophit is one of the largest bronze Buddha images in Thailand with its measures of 9.5 meters across the lap and a height of 12.5 meters. The Buddha image is seated in the position of Subduing Mara. During the second fall of Ayutthaya, the building and the image were badly destroyed by fire. The present Vihara and Buddha image have been reconstructed and renovated in the reign of King Rama V. The open area located east of the Vihara was formerly Sanam Luang, where royal cremation ceremonies took place.

3: Wat Yai Chaya Mongkol

One of the most important temples in Ayutthaya, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon has a long and illustrious history. And unlike many of the other ancient sites in Ayutthaya, this is still an active temple where monks reside. Thai people visit Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon to not only pay respects to Buddha, but also to pay homage to one of the most respected kings in Thai history, King Naresuan the Great.

4: Wat Phra Sri Sanphet

Wat Phra Sri Sanphet is situated on the city island in Ayutthayas World Heritage park in Pratu Chai Sub-district. It has been registered as a national historic site by the Fine Arts Department since 5 March 1935. This monastery was the most important temple of Ayutthaya and situated within the Grand Palace grounds. It served as a model for the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.

5: Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Lokayasutharam)

Wat Lokaya Sutha, the temple of the Earth is located near the North West tip of the historical island near the old Royal Palace and Wat Phra Si Sanphet. Highlight of the monastery is its 42 meter long Reclining Buddha image, usually draped in orange cloth. Apart from the central prang which is in fairly good condition, little more than the base of the main buildings remains today.

Wat Mahathat (Temple of the Great Relics) is located almost right in the center of Ayutthaya. The temple is believed to be built during the 14th century A.D. (the early Ayutthaya period).

Bang Pa-in Palace is ancient palace back to Ayutthaya era. This palace was built by King Prasart Thong and then it was rebuilt by King Mongkut after its abandoned for long time. We visit an ancient temple during this tour. Remember that temples are sacred places and you must dress appropriately. Shoulders and knees need to be covered.

Don't expect countless vendors in boats at Amphawa Market; this market is more like a canal-side market. In Thai, these markets are called talat nam which literally means water market, but is translated to English as floating market. Of course, there are some vendors on small wooden boats that cook and sell their food to visitors. But you will mostly find dozens of restaurants and food stalls along the canal serving delicious food and local delicacies. Amphawa Market is definitely worth visiting though. It is a very popular market among the locals because of all the delicious snacks and food that can be found there.

1: Bang Pa In Palace

Bang Pa-In Summer Palace was used by Thai kings as their summer retreat in the 17th century. However, the Palace was destroyed with the fall of Kingdom of Ayutthaya and was restored by King Rama IV in the mid-19th century. The structures represent an intriguing blend between european and Thai architecture.

2: Wat Yai Chaya Mongkol

This temple also had a bond with King Naraesuan's reign. In 1592, when King Naraesuan conquered the war with King Uparat of Myanmar, King Naraesuan built a big chedi as the symbol of the conquest. The chedi was named "Chaimongkhon". Many Thai people called it "Chedi Yai". After that, it was combined together to "Wat Yai Chaimongkhon".

3: Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit

Viharn Pra Mongkolborpit is where the bronze Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Mara is situated. This Buddha image has a lap measurement at 9.55 metres and height at 12.45 metres. This is one of the biggest Buddha image in Thailand.

4: Wat Phra Sri Sanphet

Wat Phra Si Sanphet was located inside the Grand Palace and served as the royal Chapel, as Wat Phra Kaeo does in Bangkok. In Ayutthaya's heyday, this was the largest temple in the city. When King Borom Trai Lokanat commanded the construction of new living quarters, this residential palace was transformed into a Temple, and the establishment of Wat Phra Si Sanphet.

5: Wat Mahathat

Wat Mahathat, Thailand, was a royal Temple of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It is one of the oldest and most significant temples in the history of Ayutthaya as it housed the Buddha's holy relic. Attractions in Wat Mahathat include remains of old buildings such as pagodas, octagonal pagodas, royal hall, small temples, murals under a Bodhi tree, and the famous sand-stone Ayutthaya-style head of the Buddha image in a tree's root.

6: Wat Chaiwatthanaram

Wat Chaiwattanaram is one of the most visited historical site of Ayutthaya. The Temple was ordered to built in 1630 by King Prasat Thong to honor his mother, featuring the architectural style influenced by Angkor temple in Cambodia-its unique feature is a large, central prang (Khmer-style pagoda) surrounded by smaller prangs, symbolizing Mount Sumeru, the gods' mountain according to Hindu belief. The lighting at night makes the temple even more exotic and beautiful.
