Sri Lanka’s climate is tropical and experiences distinct wet and dry seasons with hot and humid weather all year round. The small island boasts a diverse collection of microclimates, so it can be raining on one stretch of coastline, but there can be clear blue skies on another. The best time to visit will depend on the region, and the weather can be unpredictable. Generally, December to April offers the driest and most pleasant weather across most of the country, with the least rainfall. This is high season throughout the country, so accommodations, travel, and other activities will be busy and more expensive. Temperatures in Sri Lanka hover around 77-86°F along the coastal areas all year due to its proximity to the equator. The highlands' temperatures average between 60-64°F.

The island is influenced by two monsoon seasons, the southwest (Yala) monsoon, which hits the south and southwest coasts between May and August. The northeast (maha) monsoon, which hits the east coast and the cultural triangle of Dambulla, Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, and Polonnaruwa, between November and January.
