Dry Season - April to November
The Dry Season from April to November also includes the Whale Watching Season (June-October) and the shoulder season months of April, May, September, and October. This period is filled with bright skies, sunshine-filled days, and temperatures hovering between 77-82 degrees F. This is the ideal time to explore the islands and partake in many fun outdoor activities, including diving, hiking, snorkeling, swimming, and endless water sports. The best months are June through August, with little to no rainfall and slightly cooler temperatures during the day, around 77 F, and lows around 68 F at night.
The months of June, July, and August are peak seasons on the islands when lots of tourists flock to the beaches and lagoons for summer break in the Northern Hemisphere, also coinciding with winter break in the Southern Hemisphere. Things can be much more crowded this time of year, and accommodations can be expensive or sell out quickly. There are two shoulder seasons on either side of the July-to-August peak season, which is a great time to travel if you have some flexibility. The prices are lower, the islands and their attractions are less crowded, and the weather is still good.
Humpback whales migrate to the Cook Islands' waters from July through October and can be seen from the Rarotonga shorelines. The whales come to the warmer waters of the South Pacific to breed, give birth, and rest, escaping the cold Antarctic water. There are plenty of chances to see pods of them breaching, spraying water, and playing in the waters.
