January - May
The beginning of the year is the first part of the dry period which starts in mid-December and continues through the whole month of January, and into February. This time is great for gorilla trekking. The weather is very similar throughout the year and the two dry seasons boast light clouds across the country offering refreshing light rainfall and moderate temperatures.
This time of year is popular for Rwandan safaris which provide visitors with a great opportunity to absorb the breathtaking scenery of this beautiful country. The sunshine and warm climate during the beginning months make for unforgettable forest treks. The dry season is usually a busier time of year and prices are generally higher, it is advised to plan your trip accordingly.
March brings the rain to Rwanda which continues through to mid-May, this period is prime chimpanzee spotting as the fruit ripens and brings the chimps down to the lower reaches of the forest canopy. Heavy downpours can be expected at this time of the year, especially in the mountainous regions. Gorilla trekking is not the best option this time of year as the tracks are filled with thick mud and dense vegetation.
April is another wet month, however, chimpanzee sightings are best at this time, and it is still a good time to track the gorillas. This time of year can be a good time to take advantage of good deals and discounts. This is not a good time to hike around the Virungas. The rain does ease up in the middle of May and makes it a very popular month for tourists who flood the country. A good time of year to grab last-minute gorilla trekking permits. May is an avid birdwatching month, it is the breeding season and the skies are filled with colorful, winged beauties.
