May marks the beginning of the rainy season. However, Nicaragua is not monsoonal and it doesn't rain all day or even necessarily every day. May and June offer pleasant weather with manageable rain and beautiful landscapes. The months of September and October are best to avoid as the heaviest rains can cause disruption to travel. While hurricanes are rare, the rainy season coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season, so it's worth monitoring forecasts, especially in September and October.

In terms of the temperature, the lowlands of Nicaragua are hot year-round with April typically being the hottest months of the year. Even then, Nicaragua is never excessively hot and there are countless options for a cooling dip, be that in the sea or one of Nicaragua's idyllic lakes and lagoons. Because these months are off-peak season this is a great time for enjoying fewer crowds and lower prices, but some outdoor activities might be limited due to rain.
