The largest of the Ionian Islands, on the west coast of Greece, offering diverse and dramatic scenery with a rugged inner mountain range and some outstanding beaches and cliffs, and even some remains of a past Roman civilization. Once voted 10th in a world scenic beauty league, it has many wonderful bays and inlets. The northern rocky coastline has small and clean, pebble beaches while those on the southern shores are long and sandy.
The island of Kefalonia has escaped mass tourism and was the location of Captain Corelli`s Mandolin, set in war-time Kefalonia with Nikolas Cage and it put Kefalonia firmly on the `must visit` list of destinations. Take one look at the place and you`ll see why its scenery was deserving of the big screen. Tree-studded hills stand guard over sprawling vineyards, and honey-hued sands are kissed by turquoise waters. Due to a major earthquake in 1953, it offers a fairly modern feel, despite that the island is extremely appealing, with its stunning harbors, plentiful walking trails and popular Greek tavernas.
