Geghard Monastery, a masterpiece of medieval Armenian church architecture, holds significant historical importance. It symbolizes the adoption of Christianity in Armenia, which was declared the state religion in 301 AD, making it the first country to do so. The name Geghard translates to spear, referring to the same spear that pierced Jesus. This monastery has stood the test of time for centuries, originally founded in the 4th century by Gregory the Illuminator, the person whose efforts led to the adoption of Christianity. Although it was destroyed by the 10th century, it was rebuilt in the 13th century. Geghard Monastery is partially carved into solid rock and boasts impressively detailed carvings and bas-reliefs that reflect the knowledge and skills of our ancestors. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving its historical and architectural significance for future generations.

1: Garni Temple

The pearl of the tourism industry in Armenia is the Pagan Temple Garni. The ancient temple was built in the 1st century AD by the king Tiridates the first. Garni Temple was destroyed in 1679 by a strong earthquake and after centuries of attempts at reconstruction, was hardly rebuilt in 1976, during the Soviet Union time. In the complex also located one of the oldest fortresses in Armenia, since the time of the Urartian Kingdom (8th century BC), the Church of St. Zion and the royal baths. The temple is surrounded by unique natural hills called the Symphony of Stones.

2: The Monastery of Geghard

Geghard Monastery or Monastery of the Spear is one of the oldest Monasteries in the world, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the 8th century, the Spear of Fate was brought to the Monastery by the Apostle Fadeus (the Spear of the Legionnaire Longinus who pierced Jesus Christ). The monastery was built in the 4th century, according to legend, by St. Gregory the Illuminator. The complex was completely built in the rock, has many interesting cave halls and is surrounded by majestic natural hills, where you will have a great opportunity to walk and make fabulous memory photos.

3: Ropeway of Tsaghkadzor

The resort city Tsaghkadzor is the center of winter tourism in Armenia, where goes various winter sports events and championships. The legendary Lake Sevan is the largest lake in the Caucasus and one of the most visited attractions in Armenia. Located in the Gegharkunik region, at an altitude of 1900 meters above sea level. On the peninsula, on a high hill, located famous Sevanavank Monastery, built in 874, by Princess Mariam. Climbing the hill, you will have a great opportunity to explore the ancient Monastery complex and take really fantastic photos on the background of a magnificent lake. Also on the top of the hill are a small botanical garden and an observation deck, which creates a landscape, as if you are standing in the center of Sevan.

The first stop is near the Arch of Charents, which is named in honor of Armenian poet Eghishe Charents, who wrote the best poem, dedicated to Armenia, full of true love and pride. From this place opens a breathtaking view to Ararat, probably the most stunning view of the Biblical mountain.

2: Garni Temple

The next stop is Garni Temple (77 A.D.) it is the only standing heathen temple in the whole post-Soviet area. The temple gracefully stands on a high plateau overlooking the Azat river gorge. The surrounding area itself is incredibly beautiful. The greek-roman bath house with the mosaic, made out of 30,000 pieces of natural stones, as well as the ruins of the royal palace, will take you to 3rd century A.D.

Not far from the temple of Garni (about 10 minutes walk), there is a cozy local restaurant with an amazing view of the temple, where you can relax and take part in master-class of tasting of freshly baked lavash traditional Armenian flatbread.

The Monastery complex of Geghard is another historical site included to this tour. St. Geghard symbolizes the lance with which the Roman centurion pierced Jesus after crusifixion. The complex presents Armenia of 13th century, which is considered to be the Golden Age of the countrys architecture. 1: Charent's Arch

While passing through the village of Voghjaberd, the architect Rafael Israelyan often noticed that a wonderful view of Mount Ararat opens from the nearby hill. And here, in 1957, Israelyan completed the structure he designed, which is called the Mount Ararat Temple. The last line of Yeghishe Charents's poem is engraved in visible large letters on the front entrance. "Go to the world; there is no white peak like Ararat, like the path of unripe glory; I love my Masis mountain." Very soon the place got its new, popular and more widespread name - The Arch of Charents. We start the tour with the viewpoint of Mount Ararat, the symbol of Armenia.

2: The Monastery of Geghard

Geghard Monastery is a medieval monastery in the Kotayk province, being partially carved out of the adjacent mountain, surrounded by cliffs. The name commonly used for the monastery today, Geghard, or more fully Geghardavank, meaning the Monastery of the Spear, originates from the spear which had wounded Jesus at the Crucifixion. It is believed, that the spear was brought to Armenia by Apostle Jude, called here Thaddeus, and stored amongst many other relics. Now it is displayed in the Echmiadzin treasury. The monastery complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site with enhanced protection status.

3: Symphony of Stones

The next stop is the basalt organ, the Symphony of Stones. The accumulation of naturally cut stones with wonderful symmetry is a true natural wonder and also part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The hexagonal stones, stretched one after the other across the canyon, look like an organ, hence the name.

4: Garni Temple

The temple, built in the first century and had been around for centuries, was destroyed and stood up again. It tells about pre-Christian Armenia and the Armenian people. The temple dedicated to Mithra, the God of the Sun, is the only preserved pagan temple both in Armenia and in the territory of the former USSR. The temple was destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1679 and was restored for about 8 years, 1968-75.

The principal architectural features of medieval fortress-building have found their reflection in this fortress. Having been built on a naturally well-defended cape, Amberd has for long time served as an important military fort. 3: Mount Aragats

The highest peak of the Republic of Armenia is Mount Aragats (4090 m). This four-peaked giant is the most favourite mountain of climbers. On the way to the southern peak the best stop is at Lake Kari (translated as stone lake), which is at the height of 3250 m. On the top one opens the most attractive scene: the silhouette of green valleys from one side, the eternal snow and silver lakes from other sides and the Biblical Mount Ararat far in the fog of Ararat Valley.

Lake Kari (translated as stone lake) is situated on Mount Aragats at the height of 3250 m. The lake is usually surrounded with snow, due to which the water is always cold.

5: Saghmosavank Monastery

5 km far from Hovhanavank monastery, on the edge of Kasakh river canyon, in the 13th century Vachutian dukes built Saghmosavank monastery. The main church is adjacent to the scriptorium, where many manuscripts have been produced during centuries. Saghmosavank underwent the devastating influence of the earthquake in 1988. The reconstruction, completed in 2000, returned the church its beauty and glory.

6: Armenian Alphabet Monument

Armenian Alphabet Monument is located in the village of Artashavan, at the east side bottom of Mount Aragats. It was erected in 2005 to the 1600th anniversary of creation of the Armenian alphabet by the design of the famous Armenian architect Jim Torosyan. The monument is an interesting demonstration of the stone carvings of 39 Armenian letters. The Armenian alphabet has been used to write the Armenian language since the year 405 or 406 and is still used to present Armenian language in written form. It was devised by Saint Mesrop Mashtots, an Armenian linguist and ecclesiastical leader, in order to make the Bible accessible to Armenians and spread Christianity. Originally it contained 36 letters and had been completed in the Middle Ages.

St. Hripsime church is one of the famous ecclesiastical buildings in the city of Echmiadzin. This is the developed and perfect example of cross-cupola churches in Armenia. The center of Armenian Apostolic church St. Echmiadzin is located 20 km far from Yerevan. The Cathedral of Echmiadzin was founded at the beginning of the fourth century and is one of the oldest churches in the world. According to the legend, the church was built in the place where apparition of Jesus Christ was seen to Gregory The Illuminator in the dream. The interior of the church is covered with frescoes, created by Hovnatanyan family. The residence of the Catholicos and the Theological Academy are situated near the Cathedral. 5: Zvartnots Temple

This marvelous temple is a result of skillfulness and brave creativity of Armenian architects of the 7th century. Having been built on several columns, it was able to survive only till the 10th century. When in the beginning of the 20th century this site was being excavated, many specialists could hardly accept its reconstruction model, designed by famous Armenian architect Toros Toramanyan, as it was difficult to believe, that such a huge and complicated construction could have been built those days, and amazingly at that time one of the bas-relieves of St. Chapelle church in Paris came to prove Toramanyan's version; the bas-relief depicts Zvartnots temple with Noah's Ark and it looks like the model, represented by the architect. The site is included in UNESCO Cultural World Heritage List.

1: Saint Hripsime Church

Hripsime church, one of the finest works of Armenian architecture of the classical period, a variant of the concentrical domed composition, stands on a slight elevation, at the eastern edge of Echmiadzin City. This kind of composition is characteristic only of the Christian countries of the Transcaucasus. Its expressive silhouette, seen from afar, stands up sharply against the background of an emerald-green valley dominated by the snow-capped Mt. Ararat.

2: Saint Gayane Church

The Church of Saint Gayane is a 7th-century Armenian church in Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin), the religious center of Armenia. It is located within walking distance from the Etchmiadzin Cathedral of 301. St. Gayane was built by Catholicos Ezra I in the year 630. Its design has remained unchanged despite partial renovations of the dome and some ceilings in 1652.

Gayane was the name of an abbess who was martyred with other nuns by Tiridates III of Armenia in the year 301, and subsequently made a saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

In 2000, Saint Gayane Church was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites along with historical churches of Vagharshapat.

3: Armenian Apostolic Holy Church Mother See Holy Etchmiadzin

These are the lines to begin both the quatrain of one of the Armenian Catholicos Sahak Dzoroporetsi (677-703) and our tour to this unique complex, consisting of several churches of the residence of the Catholicos and the ruins of the Zvartnots temple. Echmiatsin is a small spiritual capital filled with silence and history. The first stone was laid in 303 and since then the cathedral has undergone significant changes, redevelopments and restorations, yet remained the main sacred place for all the Armenians and an important point of visit for Christians. Relics such as the right hand of Saint John the Baptist, the Holy Lance and the three particles of the cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified are kept here. The name translates literally as The Descent of the Only Begotten. According to legend, the first patriarch Grigor the Illuminator had a dream of Christ descending from heaven with a fiery hammer in his hand and indicating the place for the cathedral to be built. Everything from the bell-ringing to rose bushes and quiet alleys of gardens with dense trees through which the tops of the churches are visible, is saturated with harmony and tranquility. The Echmiatsin complex comprises three more churches built in memory of the holy martyrs, namely Saint Gayane, Saint Hripsime and Saint Shoghakat.

4: Zvartnots Temple

On our way to Yerevan after the excursion to Echmiatsin, we offer our guests another destination point. Zvartnots - Temple of the Vigil Angels (translated literally), is included in the UNESCO heritage list and is unique with its architecture and preserved details. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the ruins of the temple were known only from written sources; shortly afterwards, however, the temple was excavated from under clay layers and restored. It is a vivid example of Armenian architecture of antiquity today. We guarantee unique photos and a wonderful completion of the tour.

2: Saint Gayane Church

The series of glorious churches of the seventh century continues with St. Gayane, which was founded only 12 years later than St. Hripsime. This church, built in 630, was built on the grave of a Christian virgin who died in Armenia at the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 4th century, about 3 centuries after her death. The church was restored in 1652. There are many coffins in the yard, among them famous military and cultural figures of the Armenian people.

3: Saint Hripsime Church

According to experts, Saint Hripsime's architecture is considered one of the best Armenian examples. Here, for the first time, Armenian niches providing seismic resistance were used. The construction of the huge church was completed in 618, leaving behind a great architectural legacy, the details of which are still used today.

4: Zvartnots Temple

Despite being destroyed, Zvartnots continues to be unique in terms of its spiritual, cultural and architectural significance. This huge church named after the angels had been built for 9 years and consecrated in 652. The wonderful temple with a height of 46-49 meters was destroyed, probably as a result of an earthquake, after which such churches were no longer built in Armenia. The real appearance of Zvartnots was unknown for a long time until architect T. Toramanian proposed the real initial form of the church, which was later proven by other historical facts.

Garni temple, which towers over a triangular cape, is the unique survived example of heathen culture in Armenia. It is a blend of Greco-Roman and Armenian styles. King Trdat The First ordered building the temple in the first century AD and dedicated it to the God of Sun. After adopting Christianity in 301, the pagan temple lost its significance and the fortress of Garni became the summer residence of the kings. Nowadays the ruins of the royal palace and the bathroom with a stunning mosaic work can be found near the temple.

5: The Monastery of Geghard

Geghard monastery is the unsurpassable masterpiece of the 13th century Armenian architecture. Some of the churches of the complex are masterfully hewn in a huge rock. From the outset the complex was called Ayrivank (cave monastery), later it was renamed Geghard (lance) as the lance, used by the roman soldier to sting Jesus Christ's side, had been kept in this monastery for many centuries. Due to its construction, Geghardavank serves the best place for singing spiritual songs. The complex is rich in subtle sculptural embellishments and many striking khachkars (cross-stones). 2: Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life

Everyday life, culture and history of Gyumri are presented in the museum. This remarkable mansion was built by wealthy merchant Petros Dzitoghtsyan in 1872 from the famous red tuff of Shirak. The museum was founded in 1984 in this very building. It is included in the list of intangible monuments of history and culture of Gyumri.

5: Harichavank Monastery

7th century monastery complex of Harichavank is situated on the western slope of Mount Aragats, on a roky cape. Not far from the main buildings there is a small chapel which is of great interest. The chapel is built on a piece of rock, which as a result of an earthquake split from the cape and the chapel is now towering over the canyon.
