1: Garni Temple

The pearl of the tourism industry in Armenia is the Pagan Temple Garni. The ancient temple was built in the 1st century AD by the king Tiridates the first. Garni Temple was destroyed in 1679 by a strong earthquake and after centuries of attempts at reconstruction, was hardly rebuilt in 1976, during the Soviet Union time. In the complex also located one of the oldest fortresses in Armenia, since the time of the Urartian Kingdom (8th century BC), the Church of St. Zion and the royal baths. The temple is surrounded by unique natural hills called the Symphony of Stones.

2: The Monastery of Geghard

Geghard Monastery or Monastery of the Spear is one of the oldest Monasteries in the world, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the 8th century, the Spear of Fate was brought to the Monastery by the Apostle Fadeus (the Spear of the Legionnaire Longinus who pierced Jesus Christ). The monastery was built in the 4th century, according to legend, by St. Gregory the Illuminator. The complex was completely built in the rock, has many interesting cave halls and is surrounded by majestic natural hills, where you will have a great opportunity to walk and make fabulous memory photos.

3: Ropeway of Tsaghkadzor

The resort city Tsaghkadzor is the center of winter tourism in Armenia, where goes various winter sports events and championships. The legendary Lake Sevan is the largest lake in the Caucasus and one of the most visited attractions in Armenia. Located in the Gegharkunik region, at an altitude of 1900 meters above sea level. On the peninsula, on a high hill, located famous Sevanavank Monastery, built in 874, by Princess Mariam. Climbing the hill, you will have a great opportunity to explore the ancient Monastery complex and take really fantastic photos on the background of a magnificent lake. Also on the top of the hill are a small botanical garden and an observation deck, which creates a landscape, as if you are standing in the center of Sevan.

The first stop is near the Arch of Charents, which is named in honor of Armenian poet Eghishe Charents, who wrote the best poem, dedicated to Armenia, full of true love and pride. From this place opens a breathtaking view to Ararat, probably the most stunning view of the Biblical mountain.

2: Garni Temple

The next stop is Garni Temple (77 A.D.) it is the only standing heathen temple in the whole post-Soviet area. The temple gracefully stands on a high plateau overlooking the Azat river gorge. The surrounding area itself is incredibly beautiful. The greek-roman bath house with the mosaic, made out of 30,000 pieces of natural stones, as well as the ruins of the royal palace, will take you to 3rd century A.D.

Not far from the temple of Garni (about 10 minutes walk), there is a cozy local restaurant with an amazing view of the temple, where you can relax and take part in master-class of tasting of freshly baked lavash traditional Armenian flatbread.

1: Khor Virap

Although there are various historical landmarks in Armenia, the oldest and most well-known is probably the Biblical Mount Ararat. This is why our tour promises a spectacular view from the closest spot possible.

Khor Virap monastery is located about an hours drive away from the capital Yerevan, and offers an amazing view of Armenias defining symbol the majestic Ararat. Khor Virap translates as deep dungeon, and was built of the place of the former royal prison, located on the historical site of Artashat. It was this prison in which they kept Gregory the Illuminator, the first Armenian Catholicos, for a whole 13 years. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that this place is one of the most sacred spots for Armenians around the world. Likewise, its also the closest point to the Mount Ararat from Armenia; very often this spot becomes the number 1 reason to visit our country!

2: Noravank Monastery

Another place that cant be missed is Noravank. It is one of the gems of medieval Armenian architecture, nestled high among the stunning brick-red cliffs in the end of the Gnishik Canyon. Here you will see the one and only depiction of God the Father in Armenia, which is just as astonishing as the face of Jesus Christ that appeared on the dome of the Churchs narthex. Built by Orbelian noblemen, it stands out among our churches as the sepulcher of this noble family, making it unique since it was absolutely prohibited to bury people inside a church since the 5th century.

3: Areni-1 Cave

The tour will take you to the Areni 1 Birds Cave. In 2008, archeologists discovered several of the worlds oldest artifacts, including a leather shoe and a winery. The site, overlooking Arpa River near the town of Areni, is claimed to date mostly to the Early Bronze Age (around 5,000-6,000 years ago). It also contains evidence of elaborate burial rituals and agricultural practices.

3: Shaki Waterfall

Shaki is considered one of the most picturesque waterfalls in Armenia. It is located in Syunik region, which is famous for its historical and natural monuments.

The waterfall is formed on the Shaki River, on the inflow of Vorotan that falls into a deep gorge from a height of 18 meters. Despite the small height, Shaki waterfall has a large capacity, and the rumbling of water is heard from afar.

There is a legend connected with the Shaki waterfall. The story tells about the beautiful girl Shake, who rushed from the cliff, refusing to obey the will of the conquerors. While falling, the girls dress opened in the wind and turned into a waterfall. In honor of Shake, the waterfall was called Shaki.

The territory of Shaki waterfall was inhabited by ancient civilizations that left traces in rock niches and grottoes. A winding road leads to the waterfall, still, you will have to leave the car and get to the waterfall by a narrow path.

After breakfast, we visit the St. Hripsime Church, one of Armenias oldest and most beautiful stone churches, dedicated to a Christian martyr whose story is deeply tied to Armenias conversion to Christianity.

Continue to the St. Gayane Church, known for its elegant 7th-century architecture and peaceful atmosphere, before reaching the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the spiritual center of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the residence of the Catholicos.

Our final stop is the Zvartnots Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose majestic ruins still reveal the grandeur of early medieval Armenian architecture.

After breakfast, we travel south towards the Ararat Valley to visit the Khor Virap Monastery, one of Armenias most sacred sites, offering a breathtaking view of Mount Ararat. This is where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned before leading Armenia to become the first Christian nation.

Continuing through the scenic wine region of Vayots Dzor, we stop at the Noravank Monastery, dramatically nestled among red cliffs and famous for its elegant 13th-century architecture.

We then drive toward Syunik Province to visit the magnificent Tatev Monastery, a masterpiece of medieval Armenian architecture perched on the edge of a deep gorge. To reach it, we take the Wings of Tatev, the worlds longest reversible aerial tramway, offering spectacular panoramic views of the Vorotan Canyon.

5: Jermuk Waterfall

1: Monastery Sevanavank

Mariam, the daughter of King Ashot I, promised to build 30 churches in honour of her late husband. She kept her promise throughout her life. One of them, Sevanavank, was built in 874. Founded in the 4th century, Sevanavank experienced its development in the 9th century. Apart from the two standing churches, the unique khachkar of the 17th century, with its many biblical scenes, deserves special attention. The name of the capital, Yerevan, was recorded for the first time on the dome of Sevanavank.

2: Lake Sevan

The first place we will visit is Lake Sevan, the beauty of Armenia. Being 1900 meters above sea level, Sevan is the second-highest lake in the world with a freshwater supply. Sevan, of volcanic origin, is surrounded by mountain ranges divided into two parts and one large peninsula. Lake Sevan enjoys great popularity among tourists for both active and passive recreation. With a maximum depth of 83 meters, Sevan is the only one of the three historical Armenian lakes located on the territory of the Republic of Armenia.

3: Haghartsin Monastery

Although it is customary in Armenia to use mainly tuff or basalt stones for construction, two types of stones were used for Haghartsin Monastery: travertine and basalt. Built of white stone, this monastery has had its own place in Armenian culture and education since the 10th century. The monastery had been built for about three centuries, in the beautiful valley of the Tavush forests, in the very heart of the forest. Here is also the refectory of the monastery, which is considered an architectural masterpiece. In addition to the actual structures, there is also a royal mausoleum here. By the way, very tasty gata is sold near here.

4: Goshavank Monastery

One of the most famous spiritual and educational centers of medieval Armenia is Goshavank, which got its name from the multi-talented clergyman and scientist Mkhitar Gosh. The collection of laws created by him is considered exceptional for its time, and was used in many legislations of the world to this day. The monastery complex consisting of five churches, three chapels, a vestibule, and a refectory, will not leave any curious tourist indifferent. The monastery is located in the Gosh village of the same name. The embroidered khachkar of the 13th century, belonging to master Poghos, deserves special attention.

1: Garni Temple

During this excursion, we'll explore Garni, Geghard, and the Azat River Valley, home to numerous historical and natural landmarks. Our journey begins with a visit to Geghardavank, a renowned 13th-century monastery, followed by Garni village, which boasts a variety of well-known and lesser-known sites. A brief hiking excursion will lead us to the iconic Garni pagan temple and the Symphony of Stones. We'll also pause near the Arch of Charents, offering a breathtaking vista of Mount Ararat.

2: The Monastery of Geghard

The Geghard Monastery, situated in the Kotayk province, is a medieval marvel partially carved into the adjacent mountain and encircled by cliffs. Its commonly used name, Geghard or Geghardavank, meaning "the Monastery of the Spear," stems from the spear that wounded Jesus during the Crucifixion. According to belief, Apostle Jude, also known as Thaddeus in Armenia, brought the spear to the region, where it was safeguarded among various relics, now exhibited in the Echmiadzin treasury. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the monastery complex enjoys enhanced protection status.

3: Charent's Arch

While driving along the Yerevan-Garni highway, you'll spot the Charents Arch perched on a hill to the right side of the road. This monument pays homage to the esteemed Armenian poet and patriot, Yeghishe Charents. Legend has it that Charents frequented this spot, captivated by its breathtaking vistas. Although appearing simple at first glance, the stone arch holds significant historical and cultural value. Notably, it offers uninterrupted views of the majestic biblical Mount Ararat throughout the day, earning it the alternate name, the Arch of Ararat. This site is a beloved and widely visited attraction, drawing tourists to revel in its awe-inspiring panoramas and capture memorable photographs.

4: Symphony of Stones

The Symphony of Stones, also known as the "Basalt Organ," stands as a natural marvel situated within the Azat River basin, near Garni village. Recognized as one of Armenia's natural monuments, this site boasts massive hexagon and pentagon basalt columns, reaching impressive heights of nearly 50 meters. The remarkable symmetry of these stones gives the appearance of meticulous craftsmanship. Hanging against gravity, they form a resemblance to an organ, earning the alternate name "Basalt Organ Pipes." As the Azat River flows through the gorge, the stones are accompanied by the soothing sound of water, enhancing the splendor of this geological wonder.

1: Garni Temple

The true and unique masterpiece of Hellenistic architecture in Armenia is the pagan temple of the Sun, Garni. It is one of the most ancient landmarks in Armenia which has survived since pagan period. A disastrous 1679 earthquake destroyed the temple. It was reconstructed in 20th century.

2: The Monastery of Geghard

The monastery complex Geghard or Gegardavanq (means a spear in Armenian) is an outstanding medieval architecture that reached us remarkably well- preserved. The beautiful landscape of Geghard is framed with towering cliffs. Decorative art cut into rocks reflects and explains Medieval Ages development throughout the region. The complex was introduced to the history in the 4th century as a sacred spring inside a cave.

3: Garni Gorge
