OVERVIEW

At the junction of Bosnia and Herzegovina with Montenegro, at the foot of the high mountains of Magli, Volujak and Zelengora, where the inaccessible canyon of the river Sutjeska widens, the settlement of Tjentite was tucked away. The large memorial complex was built on Tjentite in honor and memory of the great Battle of Sutjeska (5th Offensive, "Operation Schwarz"), one of the bloodiest battles fought by partisan forces in 1943 against combined German and Italian troops.

The subsequent development of the activity brought with it decisions for the expansion and construction of a larger complex, which includes: the Sutjeska Battle Memorial, an ossuary, a small brigade amphitheater, the Battle Museum, the Sutjeska Battle Memorial House (Spomen dom) and a number of memorials in the vicinity of Tjentita.

The area of Sutjeska was declared a National Park on January 13, 1962.

The National Park Sutjeska rightfully carries the epithet of the pearls of the Republic of Srpska. The oldest and largest national park in the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina extends to 16,052.34 ha, and more than 66% is covered with forests, while the rest are meadows, pastures and tents. Sutjeska National Park is the oldest and largest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is home to the last rainforest in Europe. Moreover, the highest peak of the mountain Magli (2386 meters above the sea level) is also located within the national park and at the same time it is the highest peak in the whole country. Sutjeska is known to the wider public as the site of the Battle of Sutjeska in 1943 during the Second World War.

1: Latin Bridge

The bridge took its name from the neighborhood on the left bank of the Miljacka, where Sarajevos Catholics resided. From 1918 to 1993 the structure bore the name, Principov Most (bridge), after Gavrilo Princip, who was only a few meters from this bridge when he assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sofie. This incident, known as the Sarajevo Assassination, led to the beginning of the First World War.

2: Emperor's Mosque

The Emperors Mosque is Sarajevos oldest mosque and one of the oldest in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is presumed that Isa Bey Ishakovi, the founder of Sarajevo, had this place of worship built soon after the citys founding in 1462 in honor of Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror.

The 2,100 meter-long-system connected Bistrik, on the left side of the Miljacka, to Mt. Trebevi, the lungs of Sarajevo and the top excursion site in town. The cable car will take us to the top of the mountain where we will talk more about the Winter Olympic Games.

6: Trebevi

Its hard not to notice Trebevi, with its distinctive peak towering over the south side of Sarajevo. Many generations of Sarajevans used to visit this area by cable car, which ran from Bistrik to the Olympic Bobsled tracks. The cable car was devastated during the war, and it is renovated in 2018. Today, the area is accessible by cable car, by foot or by a 20-minute car/taxi ride along the road to Jahorina via Vraca to reach Brus. Known as the lungs of Sarajevo, Trebevi is the closest mountain that is reachable via the cable car from the heart of Stari Grad (Old Town), from the neighborhood of Bistrik.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Stari Grad, Old Town, Travnik

In the Middle Ages the Travnik area was known as the upa Lava province of the medieval Bosnian Kingdom. The area is first mentioned by Bela IV of Hungary in 1244. Travnik itself was one of a number of fortified towns in the region, with its fortress Katel becoming today's old town sector. The city itself is first mentioned by the Ottomans during their conquest of nearby Jajce.

2: Sarena Dzamija

It's hard to miss the Sarena Dzamija (Multi-Colored Mosque), built in 1757. With its bright colors, its unique and intricate artistic details on the outside walls and its carved wood, it is said to be among the most beautiful mosques in the Balkans and the only one in the country that people believe stores hairs of the prophet. It has unusual flower motives painted on the outside, and it is one of only two mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina in which the prayer room is positioned on the first floor, with the ground floor used to conduct business.

3: Tvrdava Stari grad

Old Fort is one of the most beautiful and best preserved medieval fortified buildings in Bosnia on which later historical periods left their distinctive characteristics. In so far known historiography sources, there is no record of the year and the duration of construction, or the builder. Historians agree that the castle was built in the second half of the 14th or the first half of the 15th century. By way of construction and other indications it is assumed that the original builder was King Tvrtko II Kotromani, but King Stjepan Dabia is also stated as a possible builder.

4: Fortress of Jajce

The fortress of Jajce sits above the town at an altitude of 470m. It is located within the complex of the medieval city that dates back to the 13th century. The fortress, constructed over several centuries, encircles the architectural remains of a mid-15th century castle.

Located in the south-western side of the fortress is a portal with the royal coat of arms. This portal dates back to the time of Tvrtko II and King Stjepan Tomasevic, who moved the royal court to Jajce in 1421.

5: Pliva Waterfall

At 17 meters in height, the Pliva waterfall is one of the most notable features of Jajce. This natural monument is located in the very centre of the town and has been named one of twelve most beautiful waterfalls in the world. It is also the only waterfall in the world to create an estuary as it joins the Pliva River with the Vrbas River. Whether you are standing beneath it or looking down from above, the Pliva waterfall creates a spectacular view!

6: Pliva Lakes

Located a few kilometers away from Jajce are the Great and Small Pliva Lakes. These lakes offer many recreational opportunities: fishing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, playing volleyball, biking and walking. There are also public barbeque facilities along the lakeside for picnics.

7: Mlincici

No longer used for actual milling, the Pliva Lakes watermills draw tourists down the river from the giant waterfall in town. That one is certainly impressive with its showy 65-foot drop. But the little shingled watermills feel like they might be home to some local trolls, with their dragons hitched up out back.

Kazandiluk takes its name from the kazandijas, master metalworkers and coppersmiths who first started producing kettles for the army and then later began making other copper vessels and items for everyday use (ewers, pitchers, coffee pots, metal table tops, trays). At the height of Ottoman Sarajevos Golden Age, coppersmiths were producing around a hundred different kinds of items.

Gazi Husrev-Bey's mosque was build in 1530/31 in Early Istanbul style and it is the central building of Gazy Husrev-bey's waqf (charitable foundation). Dome of the mosque is 23m high and minaret is 45m. The largest historical mosque in B&H and it is the first mosque in the world to be illuminated by electricity.

Morica Han (caravanserai) was originally built in 1551 and belongs to Gazi Husrev-bey's endowment (wakf). It burned down 1957 and it was restored 1971-74. It had 44 guest rooms accommodation up to 300 people and 70 horses. Morica Han is the only surviving caravanserai in Sarajevo.

1: Bijambare Cave

Bijambare cave is one of the most beautiful caves in Bosnia and Herzegovina located around 40 km away from Sarajevo. After we are there, first we shall take a nice walk through the beautiful combination of oak, beech and pine forest to reach the Bijambare Cave complex. The walk is enriched with plenty of beautiful scenery, small creeks, small lake usually there in spring/winter, fresh air and much more what will make us have a great beginning of the tour.
After we reach Bijambare Caves complex, firstly we will visit Gornja Cave (Upper Cave). Gornja cave is the oldest cave in Bijambare cave area. It is neither a big speleological structure nor beautiful decorations that make Srednja cave so attractive. However it hides in its floor the most important records of the past fauna and mankind prehistory. Also, it is the highest cave in this complex. So great panoramic views are attractions that we shall not miss here.
After Upper Cave we will proceed to Middle Cave and you will be able to explore most beautiful cave in Bosnia with main hall that is bigger than average stadium. In this cave held one wedding ceremony several years ago. Everything went good, except the thing that they didnt predict that there will be pretty cold in the cave. Ladies wearing light dresses couldnt stay long during party.
Later on we will see the Lower Cave and a small lake located in Bijambare Cave complex.

We can begin our adventure from either the Aria Mall or your hotel. You will then meet your friendly and knowledgeable driver and tour guide. From there, we will head to Tesanj, where we will visit the Tesanj Fortress and Colufur Mosque. After that, we will go to Jajce and our first destination will be the Jajce Waterfall. After enjoying the water all around, we will visit the Jajce Fortress and the historical objects around it. Then, we will go to the natural Pliva Lake and enjoy the lake's coast. Next, we will go to Mlincici and experience what most people come to see and enjoy. Finally, we will go to the wooden bridge that is stretched on both sides of the lake. On the way back, we will stop at Travnik and try one of the best Bosnian dishes in Bosnia, "Cevapi". After that, we will return to Sarajevo, and I will drop you off at your hotel.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Travnik

Our first stop will be Travnik Town, which is located at a distance of 93 kilometers or 57 miles from Sarajevo. Historically, Travnik was the capital city of the governors of Bosnia from 1699 to 1850, and it has a rich cultural heritage dating back to that period. Travnik has a small downtown area, and we will be visiting its most attractive objects during our visit.

2: Sarena Dzamija

The arena Damija, or Sulejmanija, is an unmissable mosque in the heart of Travnik's historical district. Built in the 16th century and reconstructed in the early 19th century following a fire, this mosque boasts stunning decorations both inside and outside. Its floral and geometric motifs, adorned with a variety of colors, are bold and striking, commanding attention and admiration. The arena Damija is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Travnik and a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage.

3: Stari Grad, Old Town, Travnik

Travnik Castle is a really cool spot to check out if you're interested in history and architecture. Back in the days of pre-Ottoman Bosnia, this fortress was built to defend the region against the Ottoman Turks. Although we're not exactly sure when it was constructed, experts think it was sometime between the late 1300s and early 1400s. During that time, the region was ruled by a Christian Kingdom, and the Travnik fortress was likely built during the reign of Bosnian Kings Tvrtko II or Ostoja. Later on, it was expanded by Stephen Thomas.

Despite its impressive defenses, the Travnik fortress was ultimately unable to stop the Ottoman advance. Nevertheless, it remains a fascinating piece of history that you won't want to miss. If you're in the area, be sure to check it out and step back in time to the medieval era!

4: Jajce Waterfall Viewpoint

The distance between Travnik and Jajce is approximately 65 kilometers, or 40 miles, and can be covered in about an hour by car. While most cities have a central square or a fountain, Jajce's defining feature is the natural cascade that falls right in the middle of the town, towering at 17 meters high.

Jajce Waterfall is an impressive sight, set amidst the compact and laid-back environment of this small city in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite its modest appearance, there is more to Jajce than meets the eye. The city has a rich history as a medieval fortification and the final stronghold of the Bosnian Kingdom, making it a worthy destination for visitors. Additionally, its proximity to Pliva Lakes and other natural treasures make it a great place to explore.

If you are a fan of photography, the Jajce Waterfall is the perfect spot to capture some amazing shots of the splashing water. It's definitely a place to visit at the beginning of your tour.

5: Fortress of Jajce

We will begin our journey from a beautiful location with a stunning waterfall and move towards the old town of Jajce, where we will visit the Jajce Fortress. The fortress dates back to a time before the first written reference to Jajce in 1396. Jajce was once the residence of Stjepan Tomasevic, the last Bosnian king, who was executed by the Ottomans after they besieged the town. However, their rule lasted only for six months, before the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus took it over, establishing the Banovina of Jajce.

In 1501, Skenderbeg Mihajlovi attempted to besiege Jajce but was unsuccessful in defeating Ivani Korvin, who was assisted by Zrinski, Frankopan, Karlovi and Cubor. During this period, Queen Catherine restored St. Mary's Church in Jajce, now the oldest church in the town. In 1527, Jajce became the last Bosnian town to fall under Ottoman rule, and thereafter, it lost its strategic importance as the border moved further north and west.

6: Pliva Lakes

We'll be heading to our next destination, Pliva Lake, from the Jajce Fortress. It takes around 20 minutes to reach the lake by car. The Small and Large Pliva Lakes offer numerous opportunities for recreation. You can go fishing, kayaking, canoeing, pedal boating, or even jump and swim in the lakes. Moreover, you can engage in activities on the shores like playing volleyball, cycling, walking, and finally, enjoy barbecuing at the famous picnic area near the watermills.

7: Mlinii

As we continue our journey from the stunning Pliva Lake, we come across the charming Jajce Watermills. These 20 small mills, made of oak wood, are a true reflection of the amazing carpentry skills of the past. The Watermills are approximately 400 years old and are a unique and treasured part of Jajce's history.

Located between the Great and Small Pliva Lakes, the Watermills are a national treasure that preserves the tradition of the state and the way cereals have been processed in Bosnia and Herzegovina for centuries.

According to ancient stories, these Watermills were owned by wealthy landowners who gave them to residents for use in exchange for taxes paid on their flour production. It's an amazing place that preserves the tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Watermills were renovated in 2005, and six of them were brought back to life, while the others were restored to their original appearance with minimal renovation to maintain their authenticity.

After visiting the watermills in Jajce, we will be traveling back to Sarajevo. It is located at an elevation of 949 meters above sea level.

5: Lukomir

Lukomir is Bosnias highest and most isolated mountain village. Lukomir is like a living ethnological museum, where the customs of nomadic tribes and Dinaric highlanders are still practiced. It is interesting for its unique stone houses with cherry-wood roof tiles. Indeed, access to the village is impossible from the first snows in December until late April and sometimes even later, except by skis or on foot. A newly constructed lodge is now complete to receive guests. From there, you can do some magnificent hiking in the area along the ridge of the Rakitnica Canyon.

One of the longest streams that by its silly flow has made an wonderful nature art in the canyon between the mountains, which looks like a snake. There is a very exciting legend about this creature, that you will hear on your tour.

Our hiking to Lukomir is taking place on the edge of Rakitnica canyon.

Rakitnica River, one of the largest tributaries of the deep Neretva River, has carved a largely inaccessible, 26-kilometer-long and incredibly beautiful canyon between Bjelanica and Visoica Mountains.

Rakitnica Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in Europe and this truly natural wonder is only 30 kilometers from Sarajevo.

The canyon's headwaters are found at 1,120 meters above sea level and the confluence of the Rakitnica and Neretva is at 320 meters above sea level.

Thanks to its unique beauty and inaccessibility, Rakitnica Canyon serves as a true challenge for mountaineers, rafters, fishermen and everyone else who loves wild and untouched nature.

4: The historic urban site of Pocitelj

The Stepped Ottoman-era fortress village of Poitelj is a medieval and Ottoman-Mediterranean wonder of nature and architecture, a place like no other. Cupped in a steep rocky amphitheater, its a warren of stairways climbing between ramshackle stone-roofed houses and pomegranate bushes. Since the year 2000, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Government has placed the village under a Program of Permanent Protection.

5: Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar

Mostar is city of stone on stone, historical, political, scientific and cultural center of Herzegovina lies at the foot of the slopes of Velez Mountain, in the Neretva River valley. The most famous attraction here is the Old Bridge, built in 1566 according to plans of Hayruddin, the great Turkish constructor of the 16th c. It has been entered on UNESCOs World Heritage List. We will see Kriva uprija, the oldest arch bridge in Mostar, Hamam Turkish bath - the only Turkish bath still existing in Mostar and one of the few remaining examples in whole Herzegovina region. Mostar tour from Sarajevo will cover Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, the second biggest mosque in Mostar, whose original color and wall decorations have been preserved.
