1: Chepelare

For the peculiarities of making this wonderful instrument you will personally tell you one of the three best-known craftsmen who has created over 142 caba bagpipe. Here you can see how the magic happens and an instrument is created, the sound of which everybody inadvertently connects with the Rhodopes.

In the bagpipes workshop you will learn many of the subtleties of this mastery: what is the drone

in the bagpipes, where is the signature of the master who made it, how the tree, the horns and the skin are processed, how the bagpipes's voice changes from every small detail, basic setup rules, and the rule that the bagpipe is held by the heart on the left side of the body. All this, told by the gaudy makers with a glitter in the eyes, will make you realize that in each bagpipe the masters have put a part of their heart and is special. And once you play, you will sink into the fairytale sound, this is the sound of the Rhodopes.

On the same day, we will be transferred to our days to see the largest astronomical observatory on the Balkans and in this region of Southeast Europe, the Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory. It has 6 telescopes: a 2-meter universal Ritchey-Chretien-Coude (RCC or PKK), reflector of Carl Zeiss Jena, 50/70 cm Schmidt, 60 cm Cassegrain 15 cm sun coronograph, 30 cm MEADE, 18 cm Meniscas Cassegrain (Meniscas Cassegrain). NAO "Rojen" provides observations on a wide range of astronomical and astrophysical tasks - from dynamics and physics of bodies from the solar system to extragalactic studies: asteroids and comets, spectra of stars of different classes and types of variability, star clusters, nearby and distant galaxies, quasars. An astronomer will show us how observations are made and what interesting discoveries were made in the Observatory.

There youll also find very well preserved Christian Orthodox church dating from the 13-th century painted with some authentic pieces of iconography. At the top of the fortress youll enjoy an awesome 360 degrees panorama all over the Rhodope Mountains, Asenovgrad town, The Thracian Valley and the imposing Balkan Range with its highest Botev Peak in the far distance.

Founded in 1083 Bachkovo Monastery is the second largest in Bulgaria. Inside the monastery youll visit the main church of Virgin Mary built in 1604 where a valuable miracle working icon of Saint Mary from 11-12th century AD is being kept together with some very well preserved original frescoes. The monastery refectory is another jewel in the complex which has preserved colorful murals from 1643. The refectorys visit is optional at an extra charge for a small entrance fee. Inside together with the Doomsday fresco, youll witness the images of many prophets, saint-monks, ancient philosophers and writers such as Socrates, Aristotle, Plato etc. In the second monastery yard youll finally visit the Saint Nikola church built between 1834 and 1837. Optionally, for the nature enthusiasts you may continue the tour with a short and easy walk in the Red wall nature reserve nearby Bachkovo Monastery where youll discover a beautiful waterfall, green meadows and lush forests.

1: Buzludzha Monument

At 08:00 your guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Plovdiv and will have around 2 hours drive to our first point of interest- Buzludzha monument, which is one of the most notable from the socialist period After approximately a 3-hour scenic drive we will reach Buzludzha monument. It was erected in 1981 to commemorate socialism. Work on the monument began in 1974 and was undertaken by units of the Bulgarian Army assisted by numerous artisans responsible for the large statues and murals. After the governments fall from power in 1989, the site was abandoned and left open to vandalism until recently. The monument was restored because of the incredible labor of many volunteers, artists, and experts from Bulgaria and other European countries.

Our next stop will be the Museum of Aviation which is located on the grounds of the Plovdiv International Airport and houses a wide range of aircrafts, including fighter jets, helicopters, and transport planes.
One of the highlights of the museum is the MiG-21, which was a staple of the Bulgarian Air Force during the Cold War. The aircraft is in excellent condition and visitors can even climb inside the cockpit to get a feel for what it was like to fly one of these powerful machines. Another impressive feature of the museum is the collection of helicopters, including the iconic Mi-24 Hind attack helicopter.

1: Assenova krepost (Asen's Fortress)

Asen's Fortress is a medieval structure built atop a rocky ridge in the Rhodope mountains over the Asenitsa river.
This strategic place was first the location of a Thracian fortress, later used by the Romans, the Byzantines, and eventually the Bulgarians. It was renovated in the 13th century during the reign of Tsar Ivan Asen II to be used as a line of defense against the Latin Empire. It was destroyed in 1410 by the invading Ottoman armies. Today, the fortress lies in ruins, with a small church functioning within what remains of its walls. The Holy Virgin of Petrich Church is the only preserved building in the complex and one of the most remarkable examples of Medieval Christian architecture. In 1991, after a full restoration of the church, it began its function as an Orthodox temple.

2: Bachkovo Monastery

Bachkovo monastery Assumption of Holy Virgin is the second largest in Bulgaria and a national cultural landmark. Built on a spacious terrace next to one of the banks of the Chepelare river, it is easily accessible and surrounded by scenic landscapes on all sides. The cobbled road leading up to the monastery is lined with market stalls selling trinkets, folk craft, homemade jam, honey and spices. Bachkovo Monastery was founded all the way back in the 11th century, while the area was still part of the Byzantine Empire. It has since been partially destroyed, rebuilt and restored numerous times.
The monastery has its own museum showcasing crucifixes, ceremonial garbs, manuscripts, icons and donated jewelry.
The cathedral in the larger courtyard is called Assumption of the Holy Virgin, with the smaller St. Archangeli church built into its side. The St. Nicholas church is the centerpiece of the southern courtyard.
In the cathedral there is an icon from 1311 known as the Miracle Working Icon of the Holy Virgin, with a silver repousse cover. It is believed that the icon has miraculous powers.

This late Revival Period architectural masterpiece was built in 1854. Its internal walls are decorated in intricate murals. The "Oslekovata kashta" house-museum was built in 1856 and is now the most visited house in Koprivshtitsa. Its courtyard is narrow and the house itself consists of a basement, a ground floor and an upper floor. The ethnographic exposition showcases a collection of original women's clothing and ornaments, hand-knit socks, and more. The ancient Thracian city of Perperikon is the largest megalith ensemble on the Balkan peninsula and known worldwide as the Bulgarian Machu Picchu.
Located atop a tall hill in the Eastern Rhodope mountains and carved into its rocky cliffs, Perperikon is built in a place that was believed to be sacred. Archeological findings show that it was inhabited as early as the 6th millennium BC, during the Neolithic era, and it was likely used as a sanctum.
This archeological complex has been razed to the ground and rebuilt many times over the ages, and as a result it now resembles a patchwork of several eras, its oldest sections being 8000 years old. Youll have the chance to walk through its streets and see Thracian, Roman, Byzantine and Medieval Bulgarian buildings up close and learn about its long and complicated history.

1: Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak

The Kazanlak Tomb (circa 4th-3rd century BC) is one of the most significant monuments of Thracian culture in Bulgaria, included in UNESCOs list of global cultural inheritance. It was built sometime in the late 4th century BC. This tomb is known for the remarkable wall paintings covering the walls of the corridor and the dome ceiling. The murals depict scenes from the life of the Thracian ruler buried inside the tomb.

2: Tomb of Seuthes III

What is known as the Valley of the Thracian Kings is where the rulers of the ancient Thracian tribes were buried with their horses and items they might need in the afterlife. The Golyama Kosmatka tomb near Kazanlak belonged to the Thracian Tsar Seuthes III. The rulers golden crown, a golden kilix (a wine glass), knee-pads and a helmet were discovered there. Visitors can delve into the tomb's narrow corridor and burial chamber and learn about the ancient Thracian burial tradition and architecture.

1: The Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis

At 09:00 your guide will meet you at your hotel/accommodation in Plovdiv and your journey through history will begin. The first stage of the tour will be a walking tour of the ancient ruins of Plovdiv. First, you will visit one of the most impressive archeological sites in Bulgaria- The Bishops Basilica of Philippopolis. The basilica is impressive with its size but also with the preserved mosaics which are some of the finest examples of Late Roman art and early Christian traditions. The IV century Christian church replaced the earlier temple dedicated to the cult of the Emperor. You will see and learn how the Christians have implemented and adopted the Classical styles and motives and created something one of the sort. The exposition of this impressive site is very interactive and includes digital 3D reconstructions of the ancient building.

2: Small Basilica Of Philippopolis

After we finish with the Bishop's basilica we will visit another example of the Early Christian sanctuary so-called "The small basilica". You will admire other wonderful and well-preserved mosaics from the IV century AD.

3: Ancient Stadium of Philipopolis

Our walk will continue and will lead us to the ancient Forum of Philipopolis and the South gate. Next to the Forum used to be one of the sides of an impressive Roman stadium. We will see the remains of this amazing sport facility which had a capacity of 30 000 spectators who were watching the chariot races. There we not so many of those buildings in the Empire which can give you a better idea what was the status of the city in the II and the III century AD. The Stadium was constructed during the reign of Emperor Hadrian who actually stayed in the city for few months.

4: Djumaya Mosque

Next to the Roman ruins is standing one of the most beautiful and old medieval mosques- Djumaya Mosque. As Bulgaria was part of the Ottoman empire for around 5 centuries its heritage has a very strong impact. We can make visit inside and admire the Ottoman art and the mixture of architectural styles between the Byzantine and Ottoman traditions.

5: Plovdiv Old Town

When we finish our lunch break, we will continue with our exploration of this amazing city. We will enter the Old town where you will learn about the Revival period of Bulgaria and the late Ottoman rule. We will see the architecture of the XIX-century upper-class citizens of Plovdiv. We can enter some of those homes. We will see some medieval ruins and the fortification that was built after the Hunic invasion. We will reach the top of the hill where the first prehistorical settlement was established which makes Plovdiv one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe.

6: Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis

Our next stop will bring us back to the Roman empire and the period after the Dacian wars, during the reign of Emperor Trajan. We will visit the Theatre of the ancient Trimoncium which is still an active theatre where performances are still happening. During the II century AD, the theatre was used to entertain the citizens with gladiator fights.

7: Assenova krepost (Asen's Fortress)

When we are done with Plovdiv's old town, we will pick a car and head towards the next destination of the tour Asenova Fortress (approx. 25 min drive from Plovdiv). Asen's Fortress is situated on the top of a cliff in Rodopi Mountain, at approx. 20 km distance from Plovdiv. During the exploration of this medieval fort, you will learn about the might of Bulgarian medieval history and what dramas led to the fall under Ottoman rule.

8: Bachkovo Monastery

After feasting our eyes on the beauties of nature, we will drive to the Bachkovo monastery. This is the second biggest monastery in Bulgaria and one of the oldest. It was established in the late XI century by a man from Georgia. You will learn about this very dramatic period in Bulgarian history- an invasion of Viking leaders from Kyiv Rus and a long-lasting catastrophic war with the Byzantines, the adoption of Christianity and the Cyrillic in Kyiv Rus, and many more. Early in the morning, we depart towards the small town of Karlovo, huddled in the outskirts of the Balkan mountain where you will immerse into the spirit of the 19th century Revival Period. Stroll around the ethnographic and cultural centre, popping in some of the best architectural examples built by the local population. Get familiar with the weaving legacy of the region and see the techniques embedded in these long-kept traditions.

2: Damascena Ethnographic Complex

Our next stop will be the village of Skobelevo where our hosts will introduce you to the history of the famous rose-picking ritual. You will obtain the skills and techniques necessary to pick a rosebud. Take the opportunity to show what you have learned by filling a basket of roses by yourselves (May-June). Our next step will be the rose-distillery itself. A rose expert will guide you on this tour, explaining the various ways oil can be extracted from the roses and how the final product is achieved. Its time for degustation! Taste the notorious rose products liquor, Gyulovitsa and rose jam and sink into the delightful scent of roses and flowers. A traditional lunch follows all this.

3: Shipka Memorial Church

Passing by the town of Kazanluk the birthplace of Rosa Damascena, we will continue to the impressive Shipka Memorial Church rising up the Balkan mountain and facing the whole Thracian Valley. The interior is decorated with gilded ornamentation and intricate paintings, dedicated to the Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian soldiers who lost their lives fighting in the Russo-Turkish War in 1877-78.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Perperikon

At 08:00 your guide will pick you up from your hotel/accommodation in Plovdiv and your journey in the East Rhodope will begin. Our first aim will be to reach and explore the amazing site of Perperikon. It is an archaeological site in Bulgaria that has a long and rich history, spanning from the Thracian civilization (5th century BC to 5th century AD) to the medieval period. It is considered one of the largest and most significant archaeological sites in Bulgaria. The site encompasses a palace complex, a sanctuary, and a fortress and is believed to have been a political, economic, and religious center in the ancient Thracian kingdom. During the medieval period, Perperikon was occupied by the Byzantine Empire and was used as a military fortress to protect the region. The palace has impressive stone structures, including a large hall, a tower, and a courtyard. The sanctuary is believed to have been used for religious and mystical rituals, both in the Thracian and medieval periods.

2: Haskovo

After exploring the amazing city of Perperikon we will continue north and will pass through the regional big city - Haskovo. We will stop for a lunch in the city center and will admire the biggest statue of Vergin Marry in the world. the monument has been certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus in the world. The Virgin Mary is the traditional patron saint of Haskovo. The Bulgarian National Revival-time Church of the Holy Mother of God, built from 1832 to 1837, was the first cathedral to be built in Haskovo in modern times.

3: Uzundzhovo

On our way, we will visit a very interesting medieval mosque that was serving one of the biggest comers fair in the Ottoman empire- the one in Uzunzhovo, which was converted into an Orthodox Christian church at the beginning of the XX century. Part of the Caravanserai is still visible next to the church. The place is unique and definitely deserves a visit.

4: Thracian Tomb of Alexandrovo

Our final stop of the day is a masterpiece of ancient art. The Thracian Tomb of Alexandrovo is a well-preserved ancient tomb located near the village of Alexandrovo, Haskovo Province, Bulgaria. It was discovered in 2000 and has been dated to the Hellenistic period, around the 3rd or 2nd century BCE. The tomb is cut into a rock and is comprised of a central chamber and two side chambers. It is famous for its well-preserved frescoes and other decorations, which are considered to be among the finest examples of Thracian art. The frescoes depict scenes of daily life and religious rituals and offer a glimpse into the beliefs and customs of the ancient Thracians.
After we visit the tomb we will drive back to Plovdiv where your guide will return you to your hotel/accommodation.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Early in the morning, we will head to the famous wine valley of Plovdiv where you will stop by the unique Red Church a newly restored late Roman, early Christian basilica which represents a rare example of solid brick construction from the 5th 6th century AD. Under the influence of this medieval experience, we will arrive at a well-known winery cellar where you will taste an exclusive selection of local wines - one of the best productions from the valley of the Thracian kings. The wine could be accompanied by a special lunch (to be paid at the spot) prepared from the sunkissed ingredients of long-kept Bulgarian culinary traditions.

After this, we continue to the symbolic town of Batak where your professional guide will introduce you to one of the most dramatic moments in Bulgarian history. We will stop by the ossuary church which becomes a symbol of heroism for Bulgarian people during the Uprisings against the Ottomans in 1876.

Following such a historical journey in time, we will head to a nearby village where you will enjoy your afternoon tea/coffee break on the shore of the beautiful lake Tsigov Chark. Return to Plovdiv.
