Founded in 1083 Bachkovo Monastery is the second largest in Bulgaria. Inside the monastery youll visit the main church of Virgin Mary built in 1604 where a valuable miracle working icon of Saint Mary from 11-12th century AD is being kept together with some very well preserved original frescoes. The monastery refectory is another jewel in the complex which has preserved colorful murals from 1643. The refectorys visit is optional at an extra charge for a small entrance fee. Inside together with the Doomsday fresco, youll witness the images of many prophets, saint-monks, ancient philosophers and writers such as Socrates, Aristotle, Plato etc. In the second monastery yard youll finally visit the Saint Nikola church built between 1834 and 1837. Optionally, for the nature enthusiasts you may continue the tour with a short and easy walk in the Red wall nature reserve nearby Bachkovo Monastery where youll discover a beautiful waterfall, green meadows and lush forests.

1: Buzludzha Monument

At 08:00 your guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Plovdiv and will have around 2 hours drive to our first point of interest- Buzludzha monument, which is one of the most notable from the socialist period After approximately a 3-hour scenic drive we will reach Buzludzha monument. It was erected in 1981 to commemorate socialism. Work on the monument began in 1974 and was undertaken by units of the Bulgarian Army assisted by numerous artisans responsible for the large statues and murals. After the governments fall from power in 1989, the site was abandoned and left open to vandalism until recently. The monument was restored because of the incredible labor of many volunteers, artists, and experts from Bulgaria and other European countries.

3: Air Museum Plovdiv

Our next stop will be the Museum of Aviation which is located on the grounds of the Plovdiv International Airport and houses a wide range of aircrafts, including fighter jets, helicopters, and transport planes.
One of the highlights of the museum is the MiG-21, which was a staple of the Bulgarian Air Force during the Cold War. The aircraft is in excellent condition and visitors can even climb inside the cockpit to get a feel for what it was like to fly one of these powerful machines. Another impressive feature of the museum is the collection of helicopters, including the iconic Mi-24 Hind attack helicopter.
The museum also has a variety of interactive exhibits and displays that provide a wealth of information about the history of aviation in Bulgaria and the role of the Bulgarian Air Force in world history, also an exhibition dedicated to the Space program.

1: Assenova krepost (Asen's Fortress)

Asen's Fortress is a medieval structure built atop a rocky ridge in the Rhodope mountains over the Asenitsa river.
This strategic place was first the location of a Thracian fortress, later used by the Romans, the Byzantines, and eventually the Bulgarians. It was renovated in the 13th century during the reign of Tsar Ivan Asen II to be used as a line of defense against the Latin Empire. It was destroyed in 1410 by the invading Ottoman armies. Today, the fortress lies in ruins, with a small church functioning within what remains of its walls. The Holy Virgin of Petrich Church is the only preserved building in the complex and one of the most remarkable examples of Medieval Christian architecture. In 1991, after a full restoration of the church, it began its function as an Orthodox temple.

2: Bachkovo Monastery

Bachkovo monastery Assumption of Holy Virgin is the second largest in Bulgaria and a national cultural landmark. Built on a spacious terrace next to one of the banks of the Chepelare river, it is easily accessible and surrounded by scenic landscapes on all sides. The cobbled road leading up to the monastery is lined with market stalls selling trinkets, folk craft, homemade jam, honey and spices. Bachkovo Monastery was founded all the way back in the 11th century, while the area was still part of the Byzantine Empire. It has since been partially destroyed, rebuilt and restored numerous times.
The monastery has its own museum showcasing crucifixes, ceremonial garbs, manuscripts, icons and donated jewelry.
The cathedral in the larger courtyard is called Assumption of the Holy Virgin, with the smaller St. Archangeli church built into its side. The St. Nicholas church is the centerpiece of the southern courtyard.
In the cathedral there is an icon from 1311 known as the Miracle Working Icon of the Holy Virgin, with a silver repousse cover. It is believed that the icon has miraculous powers.

The Kazanlak Tomb (circa 4th-3rd century BC) is one of the most significant monuments of Thracian culture in Bulgaria, included in UNESCOs list of global cultural inheritance. It was built sometime in the late 4th century BC. This tomb is known for the remarkable wall paintings covering the walls of the corridor and the dome ceiling. What is known as the Valley of the Thracian Kings is where the rulers of the ancient Thracian tribes were buried with their horses and items they might need in the afterlife. The Golyama Kosmatka tomb near Kazanlak belonged to the Thracian Tsar Seuthes III. The rulers golden crown, a golden kilix (a wine glass), knee-pads and a helmet were discovered there. Visitors can delve into the tomb's narrow corridor and burial chamber and learn about the ancient Thracian burial tradition and architecture.

1: The Bishop's Basilica (Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis)

At 09:00 your guide will meet you at your hotel/accommodation in Plovdiv and your journey through history will begin. The first stage of the tour will be a walking tour of the ancient ruins of Plovdiv. First, you will visit one of the most impressive archeological sites in Bulgaria- The Bishops Basilica of Philippopolis. The basilica is impressive with its size but also with the preserved mosaics which are some of the finest examples of Late Roman art and early Christian traditions. The IV century Christian church replaced the earlier temple dedicated to the cult of the Emperor. You will see and learn how the Christians have implemented and adopted the Classical styles and motives and created something one of the sort. The exposition of this impressive site is very interactive and includes digital 3D reconstructions of the ancient building.

2: Small Basilica Of Philippopolis

After we finish with the Bishop's basilica we will visit another example of the Early Christian sanctuary so-called "The small basilica". You will admire other wonderful and well-preserved mosaics from the IV century AD.

3: Ancient Stadium of Philipopolis

Our walk will continue and will lead us to the ancient Forum of Philipopolis and the South gate. Next to the Forum used to be one of the sides of an impressive Roman stadium. We will see the remains of this amazing sport facility which had a capacity of 30 000 spectators who were watching the chariot races. There we not so many of those buildings in the Empire which can give you a better idea what was the status of the city in the II and the III century AD. The Stadium was constructed during the reign of Emperor Hadrian who actually stayed in the city for few months.

4: Djumaya Mosque

Next to the Roman ruins is standing one of the most beautiful and old medieval mosques- Djumaya Mosque. As Bulgaria was part of the Ottoman empire for around 5 centuries its heritage has a very strong impact. We can make visit inside and admire the Ottoman art and the mixture of architectural styles between the Byzantine and Ottoman traditions.

5: Plovdiv Old Town

When we finish our lunch break, we will continue with our exploration of this amazing city. We will enter the Old town where you will learn about the Revival period of Bulgaria and the late Ottoman rule. We will see the architecture of the XIX-century upper-class citizens of Plovdiv. We can enter some of those homes. We will see some medieval ruins and the fortification that was built after the Hunic invasion. We will reach the top of the hill where the first prehistorical settlement was established which makes Plovdiv one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe.

6: Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis

Our next stop will bring us back to the Roman empire and the period after the Dacian wars, during the reign of Emperor Trajan. We will visit the Theatre of the ancient Trimoncium which is still an active theatre where performances are still happening. During the II century AD, the theatre was used to entertain the citizens with gladiator fights.

7: Assenova krepost (Asen's Fortress)

When we are done with Plovdiv's old town, we will pick a car and head towards the next destination of the tour Asenova Fortress (approx. 25 min drive from Plovdiv). Asen's Fortress is situated on the top of a cliff in Rodopi Mountain, at approx. 20 km distance from Plovdiv. During the exploration of this medieval fort, you will learn about the might of Bulgarian medieval history and what dramas led to the fall under Ottoman rule.

8: Bachkovo Monastery

After feasting our eyes on the beauties of nature, we will drive to the Bachkovo monastery. This is the second biggest monastery in Bulgaria and one of the oldest. It was established in the late XI century by a man from Georgia. You will learn about this very dramatic period in Bulgarian history- an invasion of Viking leaders from Kyiv Rus and a long-lasting catastrophic war with the Byzantines, the adoption of Christianity and the Cyrillic in Kyiv Rus, and many more. Our first aim will be to reach and explore the amazing site of Perperikon. It is an archaeological site in Bulgaria that has a long and rich history, spanning from the Thracian civilization (5th century BC to 5th century AD) to the medieval period. It is considered one of the largest and most significant archaeological sites in Bulgaria. The site encompasses a palace complex, a sanctuary, and a fortress and is believed to have been a political, economic, and religious center in the ancient Thracian kingdom. During the medieval period, Perperikon was occupied by the Byzantine Empire and was used as a military fortress to protect the region. The palace has impressive stone structures, including a large hall, a tower, and a courtyard. The sanctuary is believed to have been used for religious and mystical rituals, both in the Thracian and medieval periods.

2: Haskovo

After exploring the amazing city of Perperikon we will continue north and will pass through the regional big city - Haskovo. We will stop for a lunch in the city center and will admire the biggest statue of Vergin Marry in the world. the monument has been certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus in the world. The Virgin Mary is the traditional patron saint of Haskovo. The Bulgarian National Revival-time Church of the Holy Mother of God, built from 1832 to 1837, was the first cathedral to be built in Haskovo in modern times.

3: Uzundzhovo

On our way, we will visit a very interesting medieval mosque that was serving one of the biggest comers fair in the Ottoman empire- the one in Uzunzhovo, which was converted into an Orthodox Christian church at the beginning of the XX century. Part of the Caravanserai is still visible next to the church. The place is unique and definitely deserves a visit.

4: Thracian Tomb of Alexandrovo

Our final stop of the day is a masterpiece of ancient art. The Thracian Tomb of Alexandrovo is a well-preserved ancient tomb located near the village of Alexandrovo, Haskovo Province, Bulgaria. It was discovered in 2000 and has been dated to the Hellenistic period, around the 3rd or 2nd century BCE. The tomb is cut into a rock and is comprised of a central chamber and two side chambers. It is famous for its well-preserved frescoes and other decorations, which are considered to be among the finest examples of Thracian art. The frescoes depict scenes of daily life and religious rituals and offer a glimpse into the beliefs and customs of the ancient Thracians.

Early in the morning, we will head to the famous wine valley of Plovdiv where you will stop by the unique Red Church a newly restored late Roman, early Christian basilica which represents a rare example of solid brick construction from the 5th 6th century AD. Under the influence of this medieval experience, we will arrive at a well-known winery cellar where you will taste an exclusive selection of local wines - one of the best productions from the valley of the Thracian kings. The wine could be accompanied by a special lunch (to be paid at the spot) prepared from the sunkissed ingredients of long-kept Bulgarian culinary traditions.

After this, we continue to the symbolic town of Batak where your professional guide will introduce you to one of the most dramatic moments in Bulgarian history. We will stop by the ossuary church which becomes a symbol of heroism for Bulgarian people during the Uprisings against the Ottomans in 1876.

Following such a historical journey in time, we will head to a nearby village where you will enjoy your afternoon tea/coffee break on the shore of the beautiful lake Tsigov Chark. Return to Plovdiv.

Our tour will start with a pick-up from your hotel at 09:00. We will have around 2 hours drive on a modern highway which is covering the ancient road connecting the Silk road with Rome. When we reach Sofia we will head toward the historical center of Sofia. We will park the car and will have around 3 hours walking tour of the city. We will visit one more museum- Sofia history museum where you will learn about our 20th-century monarchy period when Sofia became the center of our country. Also during the day tour, the remains of the Roman city of Serdica will be revealed by visiting the Roman ruins, St. Sofia church, and the rotunda of St. George. Other highlights will be Alexander Nevski cathedral, the symbol of the city, the monarchy palace, Sofia University's main building, a piece of art from the very late 19th century, the parliament, and of course the Communist administrative center.

2: National Museum of History

When we finish with the exploration of the center of ancient Sofia we will drive to its outskirts and will visit the main Communnist residence where in modern times is situated the National history museum. The museum's collections span over 13,000 years of history, from the earliest civilizations in the region to the Ottoman Empire and modern-day Bulgaria. As you enter the museum, you'll be greeted by the ancient Thracian artifacts, including intricate gold jewelry and other treasures from the famous Panagyurishte Treasure. The exhibits then progress through the Roman period, with an impressive collection of mosaics and other artifacts from the Roman city of Serdica.
One of the highlights of the museum is the collection of medieval artifacts, including weapons, armor, and religious icons from the Bulgarian Middle Ages. This period saw the establishment of the Bulgarian Empire and the development of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, both important parts of Bulgaria's cultural heritage.

3: Boyana Church

Our next stop will be the famous UNESCO site- Boyana church., a medieval church that is considered one of the finest examples of medieval Balkan art. The church was built in the late 10th century but is known for its stunning frescoes, from the 13th century. These frescoes depict scenes from the lives of saints, as well as portraits of Bulgarian nobles and church dignitaries.
The church is also noted for its architectural features, which combine elements of Byzantine and Bulgarian styles. The interior of the church is divided into three parts, each with its own unique characteristics. The nave is lined with columns and has a ribbed ceiling, while the semi-dome of the apse is decorated with intricate frescoes. The narthex, or entrance area, is also adorned with frescoes and serves as a transition between the secular and religious worlds.

4: The Bells (Kambanite)

Our final stop before we head back to Plovdiv will be at one of the most interesting and significant monuments from the Communist period- park "The Bells". It was constructed in 1979 by the daughter of the last Communist leader of Bulgaria by the initiative called "The flag of peace". WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Central Balkan National Park

The tour starts with pick up from your hotel/accommodation in Plovdiv at 08:00. After an approximately 1-hour drive, we will reach the town of Sopot.

From there we will take the chairlift which will shorten the walk to Dobrila mountain hut to around an hour and a half. From the hut (1804m a.s.l.) we will gain some more altitude ultimately getting to Levski peak (2166m a.s.l) - this will take approximately 1 and a half hours.

The route does not have any rocky or dangerous parts. However, the route has some amazing views, the one from the peak being definitely the most spectacular.

Along the way in both directions, we can use the hut as a rest stop and also for some snacks. After we descend from the mountain, on foot and then with the chairlift or something more exciting (optional is to paraglide your way to the parking), we drive back to Plovdiv. The tour ends with drop-off at your hotel/accommodation.

As you venture deeper into the cave, the sound of rushing water grows louder, signaling the presence of the Trigrad River. Prepare to witness the true marvel of the Devil's Throata colossal underground waterfall plunging down a 42-meter (138-foot) vertical shaft. 5: Shipka Memorial Church

Shipka Memorial Church is an outstanding Russian Orthodox temple built between 1885 and 1902 at the foothills of the Balkan Range. The church is dedicated to the Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian soldiers who died for the liberation of Bulgaria in the Russo - Turkish War from 1877-1878.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Koprivshtitsa (population: 2400 people) is a charming historic town in central Bulgaria, situated at 1030 m. a. s. l. and lying on the Topolnitsa River among the Sredna Gora mountains. It was one of the centres of the heroic April Uprising against the Turks in 1876 and is known for its authentic Bulgarian architecture and for its folk music festivals, making it a very popular tourist destination. Koprivshtitsa is one of the characteristic Bulgarian towns, still preserving the atmosphere of the Bulgarian National Revival period of the 18-th and 19-th century. The town boasts a large number of architectural monuments from that period - 383 in all, most of which have been restored to their original appearance. Collections of ethnographic treasures, old weapons, National Revival works of art, fine fretwork, household weaves and embroidery, national costumes and typical Bulgarian jewelry has also been preserved. It was here that the first shot of the April Uprising against the Ottoman domination was fired in 1876.

Since 1965 the National Festival of Bulgarian Folklore takes place approximately every 5 years in Koprivshtitsa, gathering musicians, artists and craftsmen from all over Bulgaria. Featuring thousands of performing artists in a pastoral setting in the hills above the town, the Koprivshtitsa festival is the only significant Bulgarian music event focusing on amateur performances.

In Koprivshtitsa walk along the cobbled stone streets, weaving through an authentic atmosphere from the 19-th century. Visit several impressive house-museums from the Bulgarian National Revival period where one can feel the spirit of the heroic past of this remarkable town. Have lunch in a tarditional restaurant by the peaceful waters of Topolnitsa River in the centre of Koprivshtitsa, followed by a transfer back to Plovdiv.
