Stratford-upon-Avon
Arguably the greatest writer in the English language was William Shakespeare, who was born in the market town of Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. Now a bustling city of over 25,000 people that sees over two million visitors a year, the Stratford of Shakespeare's day was little more than a village. The main attractions within the town include the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and two contemporary buildings, Hall's Croft (the one-time home of Shakespeare's daughter, Susannah) and New Place, the latter built on the site of an earlier house where the playwright died in 1616. Salisbury
Lying in the valley of the River Avon, Salisbury is one the most beautiful cathedral cities in Britain, built in the 13th century. The main attraction is the Cathedral with the tallest spire in England. It`s 9 miles south of the iconic prehistoric stone circle at Stonehenge, which stands on the grassland of Salisbury Plain. The city`s ornate 13th-century cathedral has a 123m spire, a working 14th-century clock and an original copy of the Magna Carta (the Great Charter), a key document from 1215 A.D. The surrounding countryside has inspired the paintings of Constable and the writings of Thomas Hardy and Izaak Walton.
