From Moreton-in-Marsh station, it's a 15-minute drive to our first stop, where we park the minibus and start our walk to Broadway Tower. This is a gently undulating walk along a short section of the Cotswold Way (0.85 miles / 1.4km), which takes approximately 30 minutes at a leisurely pace. The walk passes through ancient woodland, agricultural land and wildflower meadows, and there are stunning views across the beautiful English countryside.2 hours -Admission Ticket Free2: Broadway TowerPerched on top of Beacon Hill - the second highest point in the Cotswolds - Broadway Tower has plenty of stories to tell and stunning views of the English countryside.

On arrival at the tower your guide will tell you all about its history. You'll then have some free time to discover Broadway Tower Country Park. We can access Broadway Tower Country Park free of charge as it is located on a public footpath, however there is a fee if you wish to go inside the Tower to get a higher view and explore the small museum inside (admission fee not included; pay on entry), visit the shop/café or explore the lovely grounds.
Then, you'll have the choice to either walk with your guide back to the minibus back along the Cotswold Way (0.85 miles / 1.4km) or, for more experienced walkers, continue along the Cotswold Way down the hill to our next stop, Broadway (approximately 1.5 miles / 2.5km).40 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: High Street BroadwayBroadway is often referred to as "the jewel of the Cotswolds' crown" and you'll soon find out why. You'll have approximately 90 minutes to immerse yourself in this Cotswolds location, get some lunch at one of the many shops / eateries and explore with our personalised maps.
Minimum amount of walking required to visit this stop: none.1 hour 30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free4: AsthallLeaving Broadway refreshed after lunch, we'll drive to the Cotswold town of Burford for a brief toilet stop if needed.* Then, we'll travel to the Cotswold village of Asthall, where the notorious Mitford sisters grew up at Asthall Manor. Asthall is the starting point for our beautiful figure-of-eight walk through the Windrush Valley (max. 4.5km/2.75 miles, with a shorter option available).
*If you prefer not to do the afternoon walk, we can leave you in Burford for extra free time instead.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free5: SwinbrookThe middle point of our figure-of-eight walk brings us to the pretty village of Swinbrook. Here you can explore the church, and the graveyard where members of the infamous Mitford family are buried. The pretty village green, with its small brook, white picket fence and red telephone box, is a quintessentially English photo opportunity.
If you'd like to cut the walk short, you're welcome to rest for refreshments at The Swan Inn in Swinbrook (own expense). Your guide and the rest of the group who continue on the walk will collect you on the way back.20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free6: WidfordThe final village on our Windrush Valley walk is the lovely village of Widford. We'll cross stiles and cattle grids to pass through lovely fields and meadows, passing back through Swinbrook and returning to Asthall to complete the figure-of-eight.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free7: BurfordFinishing our walk, we make the short journey to Burford for the final stop of the day. It is where William Shakespeare was baptised, worshipped and subsequently buried within the Chancel. Dating back to 1269, it was the home of the Guild of the Holy Cross, a prominent social and religious organisation. The building contains one of the rarest series of medieval wall paintings in Europe.10 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included7: Shakespeare's Schoolroom & GuildhallWilliam Shakespeares Schoolroom is a fine example of a half-timbered building dating back to the 1400s Discover where William Shakespeare was educated and inspired to become the worlds greatest playwright. It was known as The Kings New School but is now King Edward VI Grammar School (K.E.S). Below the schoolroom is the Guildhall and in 1553 the headquarters of Stratford Borough Council. It remained the heart of civic life for over 400 years.5 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included8: Royal Shakespeare TheatreThe Royal Shakespeare Theatre dates back to 1932. It was designed by British Architect, Elisabeth Scott who won a competition with her design. The theatre was a replacement for the 1879 Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, destroyed by fire in 1926. It is the home of the world-class Royal Shakespeare Company who perform Shakespeares plays to visitors from all over the world.5 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included9: Swan TheatreThe Swan Theatre stands on the site of the 1879 Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, most of which was destroyed by fire in 1926. Only the library and art gallery were saved. In 1986, thanks to fundraising and generous benefactors the Swan Theatre opened within the original red-brick gothic facade.5 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included10: The Other PlaceIn the 1970s, The Other Place was a corrugated tin shed rehearsal room and studio space dedicated to new work and experimental theatre. Re-developed over the years it re-opened in 2006 as The Courtyard Theatre. It seated 1000 people and was used as a temporary theatre during the transformation of the RST and Swan Theatres. The Other Place is now a flexible and adaptable 200 seat theatre space with rehearsal rooms and costume storage.5 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included11: Town Hall Stratford upon AvonThe Town Hall, a Grade II listed building, dates back to the mid 1700s. It stands on the site of the Market House which during the English Civil War was used as a munitions store. Unfortunately, the building was badly damaged following a gunpowder explosion. The current building was completed in 1767 and officially opened in 1769 by actor, David Garrick. Standing proudly in a niche on the front of the building is a statue of William Shakespeare, presented by David Garrick at the official opening and during the Shakespeare Jubilee.5 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included12: High StreetIt was in this area, in the 1400s a High Cross was sited at the junction of High Street and Bridge Street to signify the location of a market. In the corner if High Street and Bridge Street is a small building, sometimes referred to as The Cage. The towns jail was located beneath the building. It was also the home of William Shakespeares youngest daughter Judith and her husband Thomas Quiney, a vintner.5 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included13: The AlmshousesThe Almshouses, known as The Guild Cottages were built by the Guild of the Holy Cross in the 1500s for the aged and infirm of their members. It can be seen from the Bancroft Gardens. You will then get the chance to bake mini chocolate fudge cakes, Victoria sponges, a variety of sweet & savoury scones (traditional ones and seasonal/unique ones).
We only use organic ingredients at The Dough House, and youre going to have so much fun making this traditional afternoon tea! There will be lots of leftovers, so you will be able to take the extras home along with a mini jar of jam and an antique piece of crockery as a souvenir!
Once back home, you will be able to practice what you have learnt. We will email you written recipes and lots of tips!
