Could you imagine, that being in the midst of peace and quiet is just a short drive away from the hectic everyday life of Tallinn...We will take you on a day tour to the untouched wilderness of Viru bog, wetland rich in flora and fauna. You will be given a pair of bog shoes, that are largely unique to Estonia, and also the most fun and nature-friendly way of hiking. Our guide will lead you through the wetland, providing instructions and stories about Estonian nature and wildlife. You will get to experience the thrill of walking in places that would otherwise be inaccessible.

The hike lasts 5 to 6 hours (including transportation from Tallinn and back)

1: Jagala Waterfall

Jägala waterfall is the highest natural waterfall in Estonia which is dropping down from 8 metres high limestone cliff. Your guide will explain you how the waterfall was formed and you will have a chance to see the waterfall from higher ground or walk down by the river closer to the waterfall. It is an amazing photo opportunity with the falls and lush green forest around.

2: Viru Bog Trail

Viru bog trail is easy to walk as it starts along a smooth forest path and leads to a boardwalk passing the bog. You will reach the viewing platform or tower in the middle of the bog where you can oversee most of the bog with its clear bog pools. In the summer, when it's warm, you can swim in these bog pools (bring your swimming gear). Mosquito repellent could be brought along (summer season).

3: Palmse Manor and Open-Air Museum

Palmse Manor is one of the grandest baroque mansions in Estonia. The mansion and open-air museum made up the first fully restored manor complex in the country. The other option is to visit Sagadi Manor. Sagadi manor complex is a heritage from the Baltic-German period in Estonia and offers a chance to get to know its historic background and admire the beauty of its romantic architecture. They both are surrounded by the beautiful natural environment of Lahemaa National Park and provide an overview of Estonian manor life and architecture throughout the ages.
During the tour, only one of these manors will be visited, depending on the season or the client's preferences.

4: Kasmu

The earliest written records of a village in Käsmu date from 1453. It was home to a maritime school, and virtually every family had its captain or coxswain schooled there. That is why Käsmu was known as the captains village.
Today it's a popular place for summer holidays and hosting events. You can rest and relax here strolling along the beach, exploring the natural beauty of the area on its hiking trails.
The other option is to visit Altja. Altja is a charming fishing village on the coast of Lahemaa. You will have a chance to see the traditional coastal houses with reed roofs and walk on the seaside.
During the tour, only one of these villages will be visited, depending on the season or the client's preferences.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your tour of Estonias coast begins at your Tallinn hotel, where youll board a private vehicle destined for the sea. Travel through the suburbs of Estonias capital before arriving at Rannamoisa cliff to enjoy panoramic views of the Baltic Sea.

The second stop is a manor house formerly inhabited by Count von Benkendof, the founder of the Russian Empires first secret service. Appreciate the natural splendor of the mansions location, built on the banks of a river and close to Kelia Joa, a picturesque waterfall.

Then, proceed to Paldiski, a historic town founded by Peter the Great. Hear tales of significant 20th-century events, uncovering mysteries from World War I and II, before heading onto your next stop.

During the return journey to Tallinn, youll have the option to stop off at a trout farm for lunch. Catch trout yourself and then watch as its cooked in front you and accompanied by classic Estonian sides.

OVERVIEW

On the Soviet Estonia tour we see the legacy of Soviet occupation in Tallinn and its surroundings. The tour reveals all the Soviet secrets there were behind the former Iron Curtain.

On the tour we take a spectacular drive along Tallinns coast to get a feel for the areas natural beauty and fascinating maritime and soviet history! Youll visit the Olympic Center built in Tallinn for the Moscow Olympics. Youll hear how the yachting competitions were organised during soviet times.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Vabaduse väljak

Starting from the end of the story, we provide an introduction to the historical background of the soviet occupation of Estonia at the symbol of Estonian independence, the Statue of Liberty, centrally located in Freedom Square. On the Soviet tour, we will tell you about dramatic and humorous issues and memories (including pictures from the time), which will stay with us for the whole tour.

2: Tallinn Song Festival Grounds

Heading towards the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds, we pass the former Headquarters of the KGB at the legendary Hotel Viru and buildings that represent Stalinist architecture in Tallinn. Stopping at the Song Festival Grounds, we will try to give you a feeling of the emotions that filled the stage in the late 1980s when the Singing Revolution took place here and the Estonian people sang themselves to freedom.

3: Maarjamae Memorial

Continuing the Soviet tour along the Eastern coast from Tallinn, we will tell you the controversial stories about the Memorial of Maarjamäe and the former Olympic Centre where the yachting for the Moscow Olympics took place in 1980. Soviet monuments are now exhibited in the History Museums Maarjamäe Palace. From Wednesday to Sunday we will visit this museum.

4: Viimsi

Following the coastline, which was partially closed as part of the border zone established during soviet times, we ending up at the peninsula of Viimsi. We take a walk to an abandoned air force base in the forest where strategic rockets were installed until the restoration of independence in Estonia in the early 1990s. Monday's and Tuesday's we will visit the Museum of Costal Folk instead of the History Museums Maarjamäe Palace. The Costal Folk Museum focuses on the multifaceted history and culture of the Estonian coastal people.

5: Tallinn TV Tower

On our way back to Tallinn city center, we will visit the Tallinn TV tower (also built in 1980 for the Moscow Olympics) to get to know more about the unbelievable building strategies employed by the Soviets, their censorship of the media, and the dangerous events when Estonia declared its independence in 1991. Our drive back to the city center also takes us through the biggest city district built in soviet times, a high-rise area of apartment blocks named Lasnamäe.
