After about 30 minutes drive from Avignon, stop in a large lavender field around the village of Velleron, with a breathtaking view of Mont Ventoux.

Your 3-hours sightseeing tour of historic Avignon begins in the morning. Meet your guide in a central location near the Popes Palace and stroll through the towns historic center. As you walk, hear about Avignons extensive history, officially beginning with Roman conquest in the sixth century BC, though most renowned as the papal residence during the 14th and 15th centuries.

Follow medieval streets and alleys, and climb to the top of the citys famous ramparts medieval constructions that were restored in the 19th century. From atop the ancient walls, enjoy sweeping vistas of the Avignon city and the rushing Rhône River.

Next, head to Popes Palace, the worlds largest Gothic palace and a UNESCO-listed site, where youll have access to tour the buildings impressive interior. Learn about medieval life in the palace and explore galleries, fresco-adorned chapels, papal apartments and grand ceremonial rooms.

Finish your excursion with a stop to the Place de lHorloge (Clock Tower Square), the main square in the heart of town from which the clock is ironically hardly visible. Our tour will conclude at the Place Saint-Didier, where you will see the oldest coffee of Avignon, Le Grand Café Baretta, and the old Church Saint-Didier with its six strong bells.

This public library, unknown by the travellers,was the palace for the cardinal Ceccano. It dates from the 14th. On the first floor we can admire a magnificient ceilling and great paintings from this period.

1: Parc Ornithologique Du Pont De Gau

After a 1-hour drive through rice fields and brackish ponds, during which your tour guide will introduce you to the peculiarities of the Camargue, you will be dropped off at the beautiful Bird Park of Pont de Gau (admission ticket included). Created by a family of nature lovers in 1949, the Bird Park is situated in the heart of the regional nature park of the Camargue, which is how we call the delta of the Rhône river. There's no better place to observe the iconic bird of the region. An easy walk along marshes and ponds, following a well-signed footpath, will allow you to get very close to pink flamingos, that cohabit here with hundreds of other bird species.

The Camargue is also a country of traditions and history. Meet your driver again and head to the charming coastal town of Saintes Maries de la Mer. Discover the legend that led to the construction of the impressive fortified church Our Lady from the Sea, known in France for the celebrations it holds for each Mary's feast, in May and October. The feast held in May draws large numbers of Roma Catholics to the town for a week. They come here to worship the relics of Sarah, their patron saint. Don't miss a visit to the interiors of the church, dating back to the beginning of the 11th century, and enjoy a panoramic view from the sentry walk on the roof (4/adult). Afterwards head to the beach, where you can go for a relaxing walk along the promenade, where reproductions of Van Gogh's paintings are exhibited, or for a swim in the Mediterranean Sea. Its massive rampart shelters narrow paved streets and small squares, where you can do some shopping and taste delicious local desserts. You can also opt for a walk on the sentry walk atop the rampart, which is the best way to spot the neighboring salt marshes.

You will have the chance to visit a domaine for a guided tour capped off with wines tastings of the local red, white and rose wine varieties. Usually, four or five different wines are tasted. You'll also learn about terroir grape varieties, vinification and ageing cellars.

Wine from made from vines dotted around the picturesque village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape has been renowned since the 14th century, when it was a favourite tipple of Pope John XXII. Indeed, the name would translate as 'Newcastle of the Pope'. The ruins of a castle stand over the town to this day.

If you take the tour on either a Monday or Tuesday, there will be visits to two separate domaines for the tastings.

And if you take the tour on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, it consists of one wine tasting tour and a visit of the Roman Theatre at Orange, some 15km away from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Admission and an audioguide are included.

The Palace of the Popes in Avignon is one of the most iconic landmarks in France and the largest Gothic palace in the world.
