Since June 2007, a large photo of the film Jean Gabin and Jean-Paul Belmondo, the two stars of the film, has been hanging on a wall at the entrance to the main street. Down this street is the Norman Cabaret, a restaurant used for filming.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free6: Le Vieux BassinThis watershed was created at the instance of Abraham Duquesne and by order of Colbert in 1681.
It replaces the old haven of beaching which was much narrower. These works require the destruction of the western part of the ramparts.
They end in 1684.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free7: Eglise Sainte CatherineThe Church of Sainte-Catherine in Honfleur is an exceptional architectural treasure, embodying the rich historical and maritime heritage of the town. Built in the late 15th century, this entirely wooden church is the largest of its kind in France, making it a truly remarkable monument.
Its unique architecture is the result of the craftsmanship of the shipbuilders of the time, who applied naval construction techniques to create this place of worship. The main nave, with its shape resembling an overturned ships hull, is supported by massive oak beams, exuding both strength and elegance. The detached bell tower, reminiscent of an old ships lighthouse, further emphasizes the maritime connection that defines Honfleur.
Dedicated to Saint Catherine, the patron saint of carpenters, the church reflects the significance of this community in Honfleurs history as a once-thriving maritime port.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free8: Chapelle Notre Dame de GraceThe chapel "Notre-Dame de Grâce" was built in 1600-1615 by the citizens and sailors of Honfleur on the site of an old chapel disappeared in a landslide of the cliff. This primitive chapel was founded before the year 1023 by Richard II, then Duke of Normandy, to fulfill a wish made during a storm in which he almost died. Since then, the cult of "Notre-Dame de Grâce" has been perpetuated.
The building is classified as a historical monument in 1938.20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free9: Panorama Mont-JoliYou will have access to a beautiful panorama and it is worth seeing especially on a sunny day. You will see the basins of the port and the two pylons of the bridge of Normadie connecting Honfleur to Le Havre and just below a good part of the old city with its narrow streets.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free10: Le Manoir d'AprevalAt Manoir d'Apreval, a family-run estate located between Deauville and Honfleur, you'll have the chance to meet our friends and family, who have been passionately producing cider and calvados for five generations. A memorial in the cemetery includes maps and details of the Normandy landings and military operations that followed. At the memorial's center is Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves, a bronze statue. The cemetery also includes two flag poles where, at different times, people gather to watch the American flags being lowered and folded.
The cemetery, which was dedicated in 1956, is the most visited cemetery of those maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), with one million visitors a year. In 2007, the ABMC opened a visitor center at the cemetery, relating the global significance and meaning of Operation Overlord.1 hour -Admission Ticket Free2: Omaha BeachOmaha Beach was one of five beach landing sectors designated for the amphibious assault component of Operation Overlord during the Second World War. On June 6, 1944, the Allies invaded German-occupied France with the Normandy landings. "Omaha" refers to an 8-kilometer (5 mi) section of the coast of Normandy, France, facing the English Channel, from east of Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes to west of Vierville-sur-Mer on the right bank of the Douve River estuary. Landings here were necessary to link the British landings to the east at Gold with the American landing to the west at Utah, thus providing a continuous lodgement on the Normandy coast of the Bay of the Seine. Taking Omaha was to be the responsibility of United States Army troops, with sea transport, mine sweeping, and a naval bombardment force provided predominantly by the United States Navy and Coast Guard, with contributions from the British, Canadian and Free French navies.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: Pointe du HocIn World War II, Pointe du Hoc was the location of a series of German bunkers and machine gun posts. Prior to the invasion of Normandy, the German army fortified the area with concrete casemates and gun pits. On D-Day, the United States Army Provisional Ranger Group attacked and captured Pointe du Hoc after scaling the cliffs. United States generals including Dwight D. Eisenhower had determined that the place housed artillery that could slow down nearby beach attacks.45 minutes -Admission Ticket Free4: Sainte-Mere-EgliseThis village witnessed the dramatic drop of paratroopers on the morning of 6 June. The film *The Longest Day* recounts the story of John Steele, who became entangled on the church steeplethough he wasnt the only one. We begin our explanation on the coach before arriving at the church square to view the replica parachutist on the bell tower. Inside the church, we show the stained-glass windows and then take a tour of the surrounding square.45 minutes -Admission Ticket Free5: Utah BeachOne of the American landing sectors, where Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr. came ashore with the 4th Infantry Division during the first wave at 6:30 a.m. On the approach to the beach, we point out various military artifacts displayed outside. While nearly 13,000 American paratroops were being dropped under a full moon into the confusion of the surrounding countryside, famously one company was dropped, at about 1:45am, onto the village square and cattle market of this now world-famous village.1 hour 30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free2: Beuzeville-au-PlainIn the early hours of June 6, 1944, parachutes on Normandy began. A Douglas C-47 transport aircraft belonging to the 439th Troop Carrier Group and carrying the company officer of the 506th PIR Easy Company, 101st Airborne, is hit by the German anti-aircraft defense and is trying to land. It crashed at 1:12 hitting a hedge, killing all crew members and parachutists on board.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: Manoir de BrecourtOn the morning of June 6, 1944, the battery of Brécourt was active and opened fire on the American troops which landed on Utah Beach: the paratroopers were therefore in charge of seizing the position and destroying the howitzers. It was Lieutenant Richard D. Winters who received this mission, with a handful of men belonging to the Easy Company of the 506th PIR. Winters, in marked net inferiority, knew that the effect of surprise was the best asset of his action. He ordered the opening of the fire which allowed the two groups to move to the base of assault: when the support fire stopped, Winters and Compton stormed the German position while using the trenches network from which they operate from one howitzer to another. Surprised, the Germans were disorganized and reacted late, leaving American paratroopers the opportunity to destroy the guns before retreating. Winters had 4 killed and 6 wounded in his ranks.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free4: Major Richard Winters MemorialAlong the causeway to Utah Beach stands a monument to combat leadership, dedicated June 6, in memory of Maj. Richard Winters, who led paratroopers from Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, during the D-Day landings.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free5: Utah BeachUtah Beach was the first beach to be stormed by the Allies on the morning of 6 June 1944. It was chosen to establish a beachhead in the Cotentin region in order to capture the town of Cherbourg and its deep water port.
At the end of the day, more than 23,000 American soldiers landed to fight a titanic battle and liberate France.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free6: Musee du Debarquement Utah BeachVisit the museum at Utah Beach.1 hour -Admission Ticket Included7: Angoville-Au-PlainOn June 6, 1944, the American paratroopers quickly seized the village because of its proximity to the jump zone: about thirty German soldiers surrendered. The parasites leave some elements in Angoville-au-Plain and then head towards their respective objectives. Two American medics belonging to the 2nd Battalion of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, Kenneth J. Moore and Robert E. Wright, settled in the small village church two hours after touching the ground of France. They put in place an advanced medical antenna and hang a white flag with a red cross at the door. In the emergency and with the medical equipment that they manage to recover on the zone of release, they treat the wounded, both American and German.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free8: Cimetiere Americain de Colleville-sur-MerThe Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is a World War II cemetery and memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, that honors American troops who died in Normandy during World War II. It is located on the site of the former temporary battlefield cemetery of Saint Laurent, covers 172.5 acres and contains 9,389 burials.1 hour -Admission Ticket Free9: Omaha BeachOmaha Beach, second beach from the west among the five landing areas of the Normandy Invasion of World War II. It was assaulted on June 6, 1944 (D-Day of the invasion), by units of the U.S. 29th and 1st infantry divisions, many of whose soldiers were drowned during the approach from ships offshore or were killed by defending fire from German troops placed on heights surrounding the beach.1 hour -Admission Ticket FreeADDITIONAL INFOPublic transportation options are available nearbyInfants are required to sit on an adults lapSuitable for all physical fitness levelsNot wheelchair accessibleThis tour/activity will have a maximum of 8 travelersCANCELLATION POLICYAll sales are final. The ducal castle in Caen is now home to the Musée de Normandie (Normandy Museum) and the Musée des Beaux Arts (Museum of Fine Arts).
In the town centre, discover over 5 hectares of perfectly restored and maintained fortifications. The locals love to come here for a pleasant stroll. The ramparts offer a splendid viewpoint over the town.
Chateau currently under renovation. Construction may impair visit and we may substitute for a walking tour in the same area.1 hour 30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free2: Abbaye aux DamesVisit the Lady's Abbey, founded around the year 1060 by Matilda of Flanders, wife of William the Conqueror
The Abbaye-aux-Dames was home to a community of Benedictine nuns until the French Revolution.
After this painful period, the conventual buildings became, in succession, a military garrison, a poorhouse, a hospital in 1823 and a hospice in 1908.
The buildings were restored in 1984 in order to house the Regional Council of Lower Normandy.
The cloisters gallery presents a beautiful example of fan-shaped vaults.
The abbey church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity on 18 June 1066, remains a masterpiece of Norman Romanesque architecture, despite some 19th-century renovations.
Queen Matilda rests in the choir under a slab of black Tournai marble. The capitals of the apse offer a variety of more or less fantastical animals drawn from the bestiary.1 hour -Admission Ticket Free3: Abbaye aux HommesVisit William's the Conqueror Abbey.
The city of Caen has some of the most important monuments from the era of the Dukes of Normandy.
William entrusted the Benedictine monk Lanfranc, builder of Bec Abbey, with the construction of the two abbeys. The abbey church of St. Stephen, although largely rebuilt during the Gothic period, is a remarkable example of Norman Romanesque architecture. It inspired a great number of English churches built after the Conquest in 1066. William is buried here.
Spared by the bombings in 1944, because it was used as a refuge for the citizenry of Caen, the Abbaye-aux-Hommes became the City Hall in 1965. The architecture and interior decorations of the 18th-century buildings are not to be missed.1 hour -Admission Ticket Free4: Memorial de CaenUnique museum! An immersion into the heart of 20th century history. A century marked by the World War II, a conflict that resulted in the death of 60 million soldiers and civilians.
