OVERVIEWThis tour was created for nature and wine lovers. Would you like to learn all about locally produced products such as Wine, Olive oil, and Famous Raki? This tour has been created just for you. Be open to tasting local wines, and exploring rural Crete this tour it's for you. We visit one family winery in the Heraklion area where we take a tour of the cellar of the winery, learn how different wines are made, and then taste up to 5 different indigenous varieties. We pass through the award winning village of Kritsa, famous for its Olive Oil to our first stop for an amazing photographic opportunity on a mountain top where we have a panoramic view of both sides of the island, the Cretan Sea and the Libyan Sea. We continue our journey to the plateau of Katharo passing through the biggest forest on the island, where the roads are non-existent and the mountains reach a height of 1.500 meters and there will be a refreshment stop at a local kafenion somewhere in this wilderness! We then continue through the dirt tracks, goat valley and across rivers, this is where the journey really gets exciting. Our next stop gives you the opportunity to take photographs from a helicopter view of the Lassithi Plateau from where we drop down to the plateau for your BBQ lunch, with unlimited wine.
After lunch we take you back in time on a visit to the Eco Village where you can see local crafts being
made as they were in olden times. Our next stop is Zeuss cave where mythology says that Zeus, the father of all the gods was born, there is a 4 entrance fee and walking shoes are recommended. Then on to Lassithi plateau where time has virtually stood still.
The local people are mainly farmers. You will also see many donkeys at work. We then make our way to Seli, where once again we have an opportunity to take photos of this unique scenery. As we continue driving, we reach the village of Krassi, which is famous for a 2,000-year-old plane tree and also has a natural spring water source. Heading back we pass through the area of Selinari where you will see vultures, which are now an endangered species. The village features the important religious monument of Panagia KERA, which dates back to the 12th century.
We continue towards Katharo Plateau (altitude 1200m) through the cypress forest where we see goats, sheep and if we get lucky, we may even witness Cretan vultures in the wild. It is an excellent occasion to take photos of the MIRA A BELO Gulf, a name given by the Venetians and means beautiful view.
We then move southwards to Selakano forest, which is famous for the unique, high quality honey that is produced there.
We will cool off at Sarakina Gorge, a gorge of easy access for all. Photos of this breathtaking landscape will impress your friends.
We continue towards the southernmost point in Europe, that is, the fishing village of Myrtos. It is time for a swim, shopping or a cup of tea by the Libyan Sea.
