Located in central Greece near the town of Kalambaka, Meteora, meaning suspended in the air. This geological rock formation took this shape about 60 millions of years ago in the Paleogene period ! A breathtaking landscape of columns of rock accommodate a complex of orthodox monasteries perched on top of the hills, six of which still function today. They were once only accessible using ladders tied together or large nets but nowadays they are accessible by hundreds of staircases and pathways and have many visitors all year round. The place was characterised by UNESCO as a cultural heritage monument of the world !!!

1: Archaeological Museum of Kavala

The Archaeological Museum of Kavala is considered one of the most important museums of its kind in Greece. It hosts representative finds from the broader area of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
Your tour begins in the Neolithic period with the finds from the site of Dikili Tash. The largest section of the museum is dedicated to the permanent exhibition with the title Neapolis Christoupolis Kavala, the subject of which is the diachronic presence of the town through its monuments.

2: Mohammed Ali's House

The house of Mohammed Ali is today a museum and transports the visitor back to the Kavala of the 18th century, where the future ruler of Egypt was born and lived until the age of thirty.
The building, which was constructed approximately between 1780 and 1790, covers an area of 330 sq. m and was the largest house in the town of Kavala in that period and is considered one of the finest surviving examples of 18th-century Ottoman architecture in Greece. Repairs and reconstruction work to the original building, garden and surrounding areas were carried out in the late 19th century, with funding from the state of Egypt and with the support of the Egyptian royal family.

The Archaeological Museum of Philippi contains two exhibition units in which the finds from the excavations in the ancient city are on permanent display:

Unit A: This unit takes up the whole of the ground floor and has a surface area of 380 sq. m. It contains the archaeological (inscriptions, sculptures, vases, coins, jewellery), historical and visual material of the city of Philippi and its region from the prehistoric period until the end of Roman antiquity.

Unit B: This unit occupies the first floor of the building, with a surface area of 205 sq. m. In here there is a presentation of the Christian city (inscriptions, architectural members, mosaics, vases, coins) from the Early Christian period of its rise until its decline in the seventh century AD, and its complete abandonment after the Turkish conquest of the late 14th century.

4: Tobacco Museum

The uniqueness of the Museum lies in the fact that not only does it contain an exhibition on the processing of Oriental tobaccos (which are not found in any other museum in the world), but also in the fact that it is a museum that showcases economic and social history as well as the history of technology in Kavala and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace more broadly.

The collection of the Kavala Tobacco Museum is exceptionally rich. It includes objects used to grow tobacco, machines used to process it commercially, photographs, rare documents (documents of the Ottoman tobacco monopoly the Régie, statutes of associations, bank documents, etc.). It also contains books on tobacco, publications of the Greek Tobacco Organization, the archive of the Tobacco Merchants Association, private documents, tobacco maps and blueprints, the furniture of tobacco merchants, etc.

The museum is temporarily housed in the ground floor of the building of the National Tobacco Association. This is an industrial building that was constructed between 1957 and 1962.

6: Ammolofoi Beach

West of Peramos you will find the exotic beaches of Ammolofoi. The fine white sand in combination with the clear waters will enchant you! This is the busiest place, especially for the young of Eastern Macedonia, whose weekend parties last late into the night! Of course, if you seek more quiet corners, then you will easily discover them! You can get here by taking the long distance bus as far as Nea Peramos and from there walk or take a taxi. During the summer period the bus continues for Ammolofoi.

7: Kavala Fortress

Bastion of a blue city
At the peak of the Old Town proudly stands the fortress, a landmark of Kavala and one of its most stunning sights.

The peak of the peninsula of Panagia is dominated by the Acropolis of Kavala, the largest part of which was built in the first quarter of the 15th century AD. It succeeded the Byzantine Acropolis of Christoupolis (an older name for Kavala), which had been destroyed in 1391, the ruins of which were incorporated into its construction. The purpose of the fortress was to control and protect the critical route of the Via Egnatia. The fortress was built on a position with excellent natural defences and in a period when wars were fought with weapons of cold steel and not with missile weapons of mass destruction. The Acropolis was used for the last time during the Second World War by the occupying forces. The successive repairs and intervention to its fortifications, from the Byzantines to the Venetians and the Ottomans, can be seen on this imposing building.

The entire acropolis has been built using unworked local granite blocks, mixed in with pieces of brick and marble. Entering through its central entrance, we can see that it is divided into an inner and an outer precinct by a transverse wall. The inner precinct was the most important part of the acropolis as it contained all the essential areas for its defence.

Today, the visitor can see:
The central circular tower, which was the last line of defence
The gunpowder and food store, which was later converted into a jail
The garrison, a space suitable for the quarters of the officers or guards
The water cistern
Two square and one polygonal tower can be seen in the walls of the outer precinct of the acropolis, while in its inner precinct there is an open-air theatre for cultural events and a cafe for visitors.

From the upper level of the central circular tower, a wonderful view over the whole of the town of Kavala can be enjoyed.

1: Archaeological Museum of Dion

The Archaeological Museum of Dion, inaugurated in 1983, offers a thorough picture of the daily life and culture of the inhabitants of ancient Dion, from the Iron Age (1000-700 BC) to the early Christian centuries. The exhibits originate from the archaeological area of Dion and the wider area of Pieria. The three rooms of the museum feature grouped exhibits such as statues, tomb sculptures, architectural members, inscriptions, vessels, mosaics, coins and other items found mainly in the wider area of Dion. In the spacious ground floor, there are findings from the Roman baths and the sanctuaries of Demeter and Isis. The visitor can also admire an exquisite finding dating to the 1st century BC, a unique musical instrument of antiquity, the famous hydraulis (water organ) of Dion, brought to light during archaeological excavations in 1992. The bronze tubes of the instrument and the entire sound-producing system have survived.

2: Archaeological Site of Dion

The archeological excavations in Dion, the holy city of the Macedonians, led by Professor Dimitris Pantermalis, brought to light many findings, which prove the existence of a brilliant civilization and one of the most important Macedonian cities.

The Archaeological Park of Dion, includes important findings, as well as the Ancient Theater, where during the Olympus Festival, the ancient tragedy and other performances are revived. To the south of the Municipality are the Ancient Livithra, the burial place of the mythical Orpheus, the most gifted musician of antiquity.

Also, in the south the visitor will see the Castle of Platamonas, one of the most beautiful and best preserved castles in Greece, which dates back to the Frankish era. It is built on the site of ancient Heraklion, the first city of Macedonia.

3: Orlias Waterfalls

In eastern Olympus, west of Dion, there are two unknown places, except the locals, as we found out during our recent visit. We are referring to the waterfalls of Orlias (Urlias) and the Koromilia shelter.

According to tradition, the river Elikonas or Vafyras or Orlias (so named from the noise, the roar of the water) is an ancient river of Pieria which was lost from its shame refusing to purify them when the Mainades wanted to wash their hands there of their blood of Orpheus after they had killed him in Dion, he disappeared from the ground and re-emerged there just outside Dion, where he forms his waterfalls, two of which are accessible. In the river Elikonas, the Mainades tried to cleanse themselves from the blood of Orpheus, after they killed him in Dion.

4: Litochoro

The Picturesque Town at the Foot of Mount Olympus
It stretches up the mountainside of Olympus highest peak (Mytikas, 2,918 m.), yet Litochoro is only a few kilometres away from the sea and that makes it the perfect tourist destination any time of the year! This picturesque town was built following the traditional architecture of Macedonia and the variations of lush vegetation surrounding it enhance the areas aesthetic harmony. Litochoro is the favourite point of departure for mountaineering trips up the abode of the Olympian gods. The settlement dates back to the 14th century. Following descriptions by foreign and Greek travellers at that time, the majority of residents were mariners and there were also a good many textile workshops in town.

5: Enipeas Gorge Hike

Based in Litochoro, a town built at the eastern end of Olympus, travelers have the opportunity to discover the magnificent gorge of Enipeas. According to mythological tradition, Enipeas, the most beautiful of the river gods, son of Oceanus and Tithios, fell in love with Tiro, the daughter of King Salmon and Alkidiki. The god Poseidon, who saw Tiro and fell in love with her, took the form of Enipeas, so that he could conquer her. She was deceived and accepted Poseidon. Then, the god Poseidon revealed his identity to Tiro and announced to her the birth of their twin children, Pelias and Nileas. Besides, according to the mythology, Lito, the mother of Apollo and Artemis, bathed in the waters of Enipeas, while the gorge of Enipeas was the place where the Mainades devoured the hero Orpheus, poet and famous musician.

6: New Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios of Olympus

The Monastery of Agios Dionysios in Olympus is a Greek Orthodox monastery on the slopes of Mount Olympus, the most important monastery in the Pieria Prefecture. It is located at the Enipeas ravine at an altitude of 850 m. The original monastery, established in 1542, was destroyed by the Germans in 1943.

8: Old Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios of Olympus

Inside the stunning natural beauty of Enipeas Gorge, through which passes the most popular mountaineering path of Olympus, the old monastery of Agios Dionysios was built. The monastery suffered several destructions, especially in 1828, when it was set on fire by the Ottomans, and during the German Occupation, when it was blown up by the Nazis, because it housed Resistance fighters. After the damage it suffered in 1943, the monks created the new, today's Monastery at a lower altitude.

The monastery was founded by Agios Dionysios in 1542, 17 kilometers from Litochoro, at an altitude of 900 meters. It gained a huge reputation for the work thats been done there, while the founder himself practiced in a mountain cave, a short distance from the Monastery. His tomb is located in the Katholikon, while restoration works aimed to highlight the monument, through numerous visitors pass daily on the hiking route from Litochoro to the place "Prionia".

9: New Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios of Olympus

Not far from the Old Monastery of Agios Dionysios of Olympus, in the Gorge of Enipeas, is the Cave of Agios Dionysios, in which there is a small church. It is a common attraction for travelers, as the route that passes through the cave is the most popular mountain trail. The founder of the monastery Agios Dionysios practiced in the cave in 1542.

Agios Dionysios used to pray outside the monastery he had built and equipped, 17 kilometers from Litochoro. He preferred the quiet of the caves and the landscapes of Olympus, before returning to his spiritual work and the place is the third point of the area for the exploration of his personality, together with the old and the new Monastery, which is located lower, outside Litochoro. Among other things, it is an impressive landscape for relaxing hiking, a fort among the lush forest.

10: Prionia

Prionia is literally the last point where someone can reach by car, so it is officially the getaway to the most important National Park of Greece that covers an area of 3933 acres. It was declared as the first National Park of the country in 1938 and is a refuge for many different species of plants and animals.

Many hikers and mountain bikers start their activities from here, while someone can have a gorgeous meal at the very famous traditional taverna of the area.

1: Geroplatanos

The name Geroplatanos literally means "old plane tree" in the Greek language. The plane tree is very impressive due to its size but also, its age which is estimated to be 800 year's old!
The "Platanus" tree was designated a listed monument of nature in 1975.

The story of Geroplatanos village dates back to 1795 when seven families came and built houses from the Liavska area,
6 kilometres north of the village.

Until 1928, the toilets were called "Tubs", which means hot water, coming out of the roots of the plane tree. From 1928 he was named Geroplatanos. On the west side of the village, you will find the chapel of Panagia, where every year on the 14th and 15th of August takes place the Feast of the Virgin Mary, which is then followed with a big celebration full of traditional dishes and dance.

1: Archaeological Museum of Pella

Embark on a journey to Pella with Ammon Express at 8:00 from Aristotelous Square & Egnatia Street (at the white Statue of Venizelos). The distance of 50km takes about 45 minutes to reach. Once in Pella, discover the new and modern museum, as well as the archaeological site boasting unique mosaics. Delight in the "Abduction of Helen" and "Amazonomachy" mosaics in the ancient market, and see artifacts from the daily lives of the people that illustrate the lifestyle during ancient times.

2: Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai (Vergina)

Next, we reach Vergina where we visit the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai, situated in the borders of the village. The characteristic Golden Larnax (funerary casket), an urn with the cremated remains of Phillip II is marked with a 16-rayed sun, the symbol of Macedonia. The Sun of Vergina (or Star of Vergina), which is characteristic symbol of the Argead Dynasty (of the King Phillip II and Alexander the Great) was found together with the excavations that brought back to light his fathers Royal Tomb. 4 of the sun rays represent of the 4 classical elements and the other 12 sun rays represent the 12 Olympian Gods. Admire the golden oak wreath that Phillip II had during his funeral pyre, military armors.

Later, we enjoy our lunch break in a restaurant with greek traditional flavours.

Last stop before our departure is at the grand New Museum of Aigai, hosting findings and artifacts unearthed from the soil of the old capital;

4: Louloudadika

Louloudadika is a small area of the historic city center including the streets of Komninon, Frangon and Vas. Herakliou, which takes its name from the old outdoor florists that were there. Unfortunately only 4 continue to run today.In the 50s there were 11 shops selling all sorts of flowers and their fame reached to the provincial cities.

In the same neighborhood there is also the old Ottoman bath Yahudi Hamami built in the 16th century and the name (Yahudi = Hebrew) comes from the fact that this area had a lot of Jewish shops. It was a scandalous place in its time as a bath for both men and women. But in the fire of 1917 it lost its stately splendor, having sustained various damages. Recently, the restoration was completed and now the old Hamam hosts various cultural activities such as the Biennale, photography exhibitions, etc.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Kerkini Lake

The distance is 98km and lasts approximately 1½ hour.

We reach the dam of the picturesque Kerkini Lake in the area of Lithotopos. Each season of the year the lake hosts different species of birds, therefore every visit hides a different surprise for the traveler. The beautiful flamingos though, can be found there all year round and their characteristic pink plumage colors the blue surface of the lake giving enchanting views combined with the verdant surrounding landscape. The horse riding area is located next to the dam where we can enjoy a ride and feel part of this wonderful natural scenery (optional and upon notification).

Later on, we have a coffee break and then continue our trip to the east part of the lake, visiting a traditional farm with impressive buffalos that walk next to us; observing their movements in their natural environment and learning their unique history.

1: Meteora

We reach Meteora at around 12:30p.m; this fascinating complex of huge steep rocks of pennant, arising close to the first elevations of the longest sierra in Greece, Pindos (the spine of Greece). We visit two of the six operating Holy Monasteries depending on the schedule of each one.

During our visits to the monasteries we make a short stop to admire the stunning panoramic view of the Holy Monasteries from up high and capture the mystique of the landscape. The wild unapproachable area with the sandstones of more than 65 millions years old is majestic and at the same time unearthly and divine as until today their origin cannot be explained.
Next, we enjoy our greek traditional lunch break in Kastraki, at Kalampaka area, against the view of the astonishing Meteora.

We depart to Thessaloniki at around 15:30p.m and we have a last stop for 20 for coffee and rest. We are back at about 19:00p.m, making the same stops where we started from.
