3: Via Garibaldi

Dive into history in a place where time seems to stand still, between majestic palaces and luxurious gardens, Via Garibaldi, with its architectural wealth and imposing buildings, is one of the main streets of Genoa and one of the largest in the historic centre. Originally Strada Maggiore, then Strada Nuova but known until the nineteenth century as Via Aurea (the Golden Street). In 1882 it was renamed in honour of Giuseppe Garibaldi.

4: La Casa di Colombo

The so-called Columbus' House is located not far from the gate of Porta Soprana, just outside the medieval walls. It is probably an 18th century reconstruction of the original medieval building, where the discoverer of the Americas spent his youth. The house was likely destroyed during the bombing by the French fleet of King Louis XIV that hit Genoa in 1684. The building has two floors: the ground floor was used as a workshop by his father, Domenico Columbus, who dealt in wool weaving and trade; the home of the family was upstairs. According to written sources, the navigator must have lived here between 1455 and 1470.

5: Piazza Banchi

Located just off one of the most important docks in the city, this was once the site of Genoas old grain market, and was known as piazza "dei banchi" in the 12th century due to the money-changers' stalls located under the porticoes of the various buildings.

The most important church in Genoa is the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo. The Genoese cathedral and the artistic representations on its walls gave rise to many legends and curiosities.

8: Piazza Raffaele De Ferrari

Genoa's main square, a meeting and gathering place for important city events, is dedicated to Raffaele De Ferrari, the Duke of Galliera, a generous benefactor who donated a considerable sum of money in 1875 towards projects to expand the port.

In the centre is a monumental bronze fountain, crafted by the architect Cesare Crosa of Vergagni in 1936. The Teatro Carlo Felice and the building of the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti (Ligurian Academy of Fine Arts) that look onto the square were both designed by Carlo Barabino. Piazza De Ferrari is also bordered by the side façade of Palazzo Ducale (the main entrance of which is on the adjacent Piazza Matteotti), Palazzo della Regione Liguria (the offices of the Liguria region, built in 1920), and Palazzo della Nuova Borsa (the new stock exchange), one of the finest examples of Genoese Art Nouveau (1912).

1: Via Giuseppe Garibaldi

You might expect a street laid out in the 16th and 17th centuries as a setting for palaces of Genoa's richest and most powerful families to be a grand broad avenue, but Via Garibaldi is little more than a lane. It seems even narrower because it is hemmed in on both sides by the grandiose facades of side-by-side palaces. This little street, which lies north of Piazza Ferrari and above the sailors' quarter, is worth walking down even if none of the palaces is open to tour. Its facades present a succession of carved and painted embellishments, frescoes, grand arcades and loggias, balconies, courtyards, and entrances crowned by crests of noble families whose homes these were. So outstanding is this assemblage that it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can tour three of these -- Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco, and Palazzo Tursi - on a single ticket to see the interiors and their superb art collections.

2: Piazza Raffaele De Ferrari

Piazza De Ferrari is the main square of Genoa. Situated in the heart of the city between the historical and the modern center, Piazza De Ferrari is renowned for its fountain, which was restored in recent years along with a major restyling of the square. Today next to Piazza De Ferrari are numerous office buildings, headquarters of banks, insurances and other private companies, making of this district the financial and business centre of Genoa, so that the Genoese popularly refers to it as the "City" of Genoa. At the end of the 19th century, Genoa was the main financial centre of Italy along with Milan, and Piazza De Ferrari was the place where many institutions were established, like the stock exchange, the Credito Italiano, the branch offices of the Bank of Italy, founded in 1893.

3: La Casa di Colombo

The house is located outside Genoa's 14th-century walls. During the Renaissance, the area became subject to intense building, mainly consisting of public housing. Columbus was born in 1451, and historical documents indicated that Columbus lived here between approximately 1455 and 1470. Currently, the building operates as a museum, under the management of the "Porta Soprana".

4: Castello d'Albertis

Albertis Castle stands a short distance from the main harbour and houses the Museum of World Cultures. The castle itself was created in a Gothic Revival style and was built in 1886. It is actually built on the site of a previous 12th century fort and preserves the forts original foundations. The castle offers great views of the Ligurian Sea and the surrounding city. Inside the building is the wonderful museum of world cultures. This collection includes a range of findings from around the world by Enrico and Luigi Albertis such as weaponry from the Sudan and China, and artefacts from the Mayan civilization.

5: Chiesa del Gesu e dei Santi Ambrogio e Andrea

Just a few meters from the massive cathedral of San Lorenzo, Chiesa del Gesu is one of the oldest churches in Genoa, originally dating back to the 6th century. While the outside of the church was completely rebuilt in 1894 when the Doge's Palace was strongly renovated, it still houses one of the most gorgeous ceilings in the city. Gilded in gold, and covered in richly-colored paintings, visit the Chiesa at sunset to see everything beautifully illuminated by a natural, ethereal glow.

6: Old Port

Soaked in history and rich in local color, Old Port houses museums, movie theaters, cafes, restaurants, and shops. Renowned architect Renzo Piano redeveloped this area in the 1990s, restoring the historic buildings, like the old cotton warehouse, and creating new landmarks that have become the citys biggest tourist draws. Genoa remains an important port on the Mediterranean, and this busy harbor is filled to the brim with yachts, ferries, cargo ships, and boats of all sizes.

7: LANTERNA di Genova

The Lanterna di Genoa is an ornate ancient lighthouse that has stood since the 12th century but over time has been reconstructed. It stands as the main lighthouse of the harbour and is an iconic landmark of the city. After the tower of Hercules and the Kopu lighthouse, it is the oldest in the world. A large icon of the city of Genoa is present on one side, and the top is crowned with a large glass light. Standing at 76m high it towers over the surrounding area and can be seen for miles.

8: Piazza Matteotti

Although situated right next to the Piazza De Ferrari, the Piazza Matteotti is a wonderful location in its own right and features a range of historical buildings and sights. Doges Palace sits at one of the of square and is a truly opulent building framed by a series of stone columns, whilst at the other end sits the fabulous San Lorenzo Cathedral. Furthermore, markets are often held here and you can pick up a great bargain after haggling with the locals. Finally, there is also the Church of Saint Ambrogio which is a fantastic building which an ornate interior.

9: Torri di Porta Soprana

Porta Soprana is the best-known gate of the ancient walls of Genoa. After major restorations carried out between the 19th and 20th centuries, it has regained the appearance it supposedly had at the time of the construction of the so-called Barbarossa walls (1150 ca.).

10: Spianata Castelletto

Castelletto is a residential quarter in Genoa and the Spianata is a raised platform and walkway that offers unparalleled views of the city and harbour. The courtyard and walkway are accessible via a series of steps or an ornate lift that is topped with a large glass panelled building. Once you are at the top, you can look down to the city beneath you. During the daytime see the ships in the harbour and hear the hustle and bustle of the locals, and at night see the city transformed with an advent of lights. Meet your guide at your hotel or at the cruise ship port.
From Genoa, along the picturesque Ligurian coast, you will go to Portofino a small but luxurious resort town. You will learn its history, walk along the bright streets, meet numerous boutiques, expensive restaurants, and colorful houses. You will see Chiesa di San Giorgio - Catholic Church, located on the promontory of Portofino. According to the tablet, located in the Church, the Shrine was built in the Romanesque style in 1154. Although the excavations carried out during the reconstruction of the Church after the Second world war, were found the remains of an ancient chapel, once located on this site, which may relate the history of the Church to the era of the Lombards in Liguria.

2: Castello Brown

Take a walk along the promenade, watching the yachts, and enjoy the views from the postcards. You will visit Castello Brown. The Castle itself was built in the 15th century and has been used for harbour defense during the centuries. It was in 1867 that the Castle fell into private hands when it was purchased by, the English Consul Montague Yeats Brown. He transformed it from a fortress into a stunning villa under the expert advice of the architect Alfredo de Andrade and the engineer Pietro Tamburelli.

3: Faro Di Portofino

You will visit Portofino Lighthouse. Portofino Lighthouse is an active lighthouse located in Portofino. The lighthouse was built in 1917 and consists of a white quadrangular tower, 12 feet (3.7 m) high, with balcony and lantern, attached to a 2-storey white keeper's house. The lantern, painted in grey metallic, is positioned at 40 metres (130 ft) above sea level and emits one white flash in a 5 seconds period, visible up to a distance of 16 nautical miles (30 km; 18 mi). The lighthouse is completely automated, powered by a solar unit and is operated by the Marina Militare with the identification code number 1675 E.F.
After that, you will have time for lunch.

4: Castello d'Albertis

After lunch, you will be heading back to Genoa, a city with a rich past and historical heritage.
You will have a walking tour of the main sights of Genoa. Albertis Castle stands a short distance from the main harbour and houses the Museum of World Cultures. The castle itself was created in a Gothic Revival style and was built in 1886. It is actually built on the site of a previous 12th century fort and preserves the forts original foundations. The castle offers great views of the Ligurian Sea and the surrounding city. Inside the building is the wonderful museum of world cultures. This collection includes a range of findings from around the world by Enrico and Luigi Albertis such as weaponry from the Sudan and China, and artefacts from the Mayan civilization.

5: Chiesa del Gesu e dei Santi Ambrogio e Andrea

Just a few meters from the massive cathedral of San Lorenzo, Chiesa del Gesu is one of the oldest churches in Genoa, originally dating back to the 6th century. While the outside of the church was completely rebuilt in 1894 when the Doge's Palace was strongly renovated, it still houses one of the most gorgeous ceilings in the city. Gilded in gold, and covered in richly-colored paintings, visit the Chiesa at sunset to see everything beautifully illuminated by a natural, ethereal glow.

6: La Casa di Colombo

The house is located outside Genoa's 14th-century walls. During the Renaissance, the area became subject to intense building, mainly consisting of public housing. Columbus was born in 1451, and historical documents indicated that Columbus lived here between approximately 1455 and 1470. Currently, the building operates as a museum, under the management of the "Porta Soprana".

7: Old Port

Soaked in history and rich in local color, Old Port houses museums, movie theaters, cafes, restaurants, and shops. Renowned architect Renzo Piano redeveloped this area in the 1990s, restoring the historic buildings, like the old cotton warehouse, and creating new landmarks that have become the citys biggest tourist draws. Genoa remains an important port on the Mediterranean, and this busy harbor is filled to the brim with yachts, ferries, cargo ships, and boats of all sizes.

8: LANTERNA di Genova

The Lanterna di Genoa is an ornate ancient lighthouse that has stood since the 12th century but over time has been reconstructed. It stands as the main lighthouse of the harbour and is an iconic landmark of the city. After the tower of Hercules and the Kopu lighthouse, it is the oldest in the world. A large icon of the city of Genoa is present on one side, and the top is crowned with a large glass light. Standing at 76m high it towers over the surrounding area and can be seen for miles.

9: Piazza Raffaele De Ferrari

Piazza De Ferrari is the main square of Genoa. Situated in the heart of the city between the historical and the modern center, Piazza De Ferrari is renowned for its fountain, which was restored in recent years along with a major restyling of the square. Today next to Piazza De Ferrari are numerous office buildings, headquarters of banks, insurances and other private companies, making of this district the financial and business centre of Genoa, so that the Genoese popularly refers to it as the "City" of Genoa. At the end of the 19th century, Genoa was the main financial centre of Italy along with Milan, and Piazza De Ferrari was the place where many institutions were established, like the stock exchange, the Credito Italiano, the branch offices of the Bank of Italy, founded in 1893.

10: Piazza Matteotti

Although situated right next to the Piazza De Ferrari, the Piazza Matteotti is a wonderful location in its own right and features a range of historical buildings and sights. Doges Palace sits at one of the of square and is a truly opulent building framed by a series of stone columns, whilst at the other end sits the fabulous San Lorenzo Cathedral. Furthermore, markets are often held here and you can pick up a great bargain after haggling with the locals. Finally, there is also the Church of Saint Ambrogio which is a fantastic building which an ornate interior.

11: Torri di Porta Soprana

Porta Soprana is the best-known gate of the ancient walls of Genoa. After major restorations carried out between the 19th and 20th centuries, it has regained the appearance it supposedly had at the time of the construction of the so-called Barbarossa walls (1150 ca.).

12: Via Giuseppe Garibaldi

You might expect a street laid out in the 16th and 17th centuries as a setting for palaces of Genoa's richest and most powerful families to be a grand broad avenue, but Via Garibaldi is little more than a lane. It seems even narrower because it is hemmed in on both sides by the grandiose facades of side-by-side palaces. This little street, which lies north of Piazza Ferrari and above the sailors' quarter, is worth walking down even if none of the palaces is open to tour. Its facades present a succession of carved and painted embellishments, frescoes, grand arcades and loggias, balconies, courtyards, and entrances crowned by crests of noble families whose homes these were. So outstanding is this assemblage that it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can tour three of these -- Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco, and Palazzo Tursi - on a single ticket to see the interiors and their superb art collections.

Piazza Raffaele De Ferrari (Pass by)

It is the main square of Genoa. Located in the heart of the city, it represents its commercial, financial and economic hub, as well as being the main point of reference during the most important events of city life.
The current appearance of the square took shape in the first two decades of the twentieth century, with the construction of the three streets that converge there from the east, via XX Settembre (1892-1901), via Dante and via Petrarca (1901-1915), and the four large buildings in eclectic style, headquarters of companies and institutions, built between 1899 and 1923 in the area obtained from the excavation of the hill of S. Andrea.These are contrasted, on the opposite side, by the neoclassical profile of the buildings built in the first half of the nineteenth century by Carlo Barabino in what was the ancient Piazza San Domenico: Carlo Felice theater (1827) and the Palazzo dell'Accademia ligustica di fine arts (1831).

It is an ancient seaside village in the municipality of Genoa with its pastel-coloured houses, leaning against each other and crowded around a small bay, although now surrounded by the city context, it has remained almost unchanged over time, as it would have been could have seen a century or two ago. Some fishermen still continue their ancient activity.

Corso Italia (Pass by)

It is one of the main arteries of Genoa. It develops along a route of approximately 2.2 km, entirely overlooking the sea. Built in the first decades of the twentieth century, it immediately became one of the main meeting points for the Sunday strolls of the Genoese, ending up being considered the promenade par excellence of the city.

Via XX Settembre (Pass by)

Built in the last decade of the nineteenth century, rectifying and widening the route of via Giulia and via della Consolazione, to create a new road towards the east, which until then had inadequate outlets for the urban expansion of the city. The name of the new road was the subject of heated discussions at the time, until the desire of numerous citizens to see the historic date of the Fall of Rome recognized with this name prevailed.

The street was strongly supported by the mayor Andrea Podestà, but opposed by the resident population because to build it it was necessary to demolish houses and shops. Above all, the religious of the Rimedio church, expropriated to allow the passage of the artery, were against it. Among the other necessary demolitions there was that of the Sant'Andrea prison, hindered by the government.

Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta di Carignano (Pass by)

It stands out with its harmonious mass at the top of the Carignano hill, is one of the best-known Genoese works by Galeazzo Alessi and one of the greatest examples of Renaissance architecture in the city. The sculptures by Pierre Puget and Filippo Parodi contained inside are among the highest masterpieces of Genoese Baroque. Due to its pre-eminent position, it is clearly visible from many parts of the city, which it overlooks with four identical façades, even if partially hidden by modern buildings.

Started around the middle of the sixteenth century, its construction continued until the beginning of the following century, but the works also continued in the following centuries.

Piazza Corvetto (Pass by)

it is one of the largest and most elegant squares in Genoa, characterized by gardens and flower beds in both avenues leading to the nearby Acquasola park and the Villetta di Negro, in its center stands the imposing equestrian statue dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy. The Franzoniana Library is located there and, a short distance away, the Duse and Politeama theaters, the Mazzini Gallery and the Villetta Dinegro are located. The pedestrian underpasses of Piazza Corvetto have been cyclically decorated with extemporaneous galleries, called Falsi d'autore. Among the first works reproduced, some paintings by Van Gogh, Kandinsky and Magritte

It is a residential neighborhood located on the hills overlooking the historic center of Genoa. The area on which the Castelletto stood, divided into lots and built in the mid-nineteenth century, extends between Piazza Goffredo Villa and the Luigi Montaldo belvedere, a panoramic terrace overlooking the roofs of the historic center, the basin of the ancient port, the buildings of "Strada Nuova" (via Garibaldi) and the buildings below with hanging gardens that house the municipal offices, designed in the fifties by Franco Albini. This panoramic view, publicized by historic photos from the early twentieth century, is today one of the best known and authentic images of Genoa.

It is one of the most representative churches of Genoese art of late mannerism and, above all, of the baroque of the early seventeenth century.

Via Balbi (Pass by)

It is one of the main streets of Genoa. Designed as early as 1585, it represented an urban planning intervention resulting from the decentralization of luxury residences from the core of the historic center towards new areas of the city, at the time less dense with buildings, quieter and more peripheral.

Villa del Principe (Pass by)

It is one of the main historic villas of Genoa, built in the sixteenth century in an area which, at the time of its construction, was outside the city walls. The villa presents multiple interventions and stratifications that make a unitary definition impossible
