Despite the dramatic destruction caused by the disastrous earthquake of 1908 and the mass bombings of World War II, the city managed to save many monuments and museums that are well worth a visit.

Your journey begins at the Cathedral Square where you can admire the worlds largest astronomical clock, the second-largest in Sicily Cathedral, with its impressive mosaics of the XIV century and Orions Fountain.

This 60-meter high bell-tower reconstructed using old designs, includes one of the greatest of all astronomical clocks, a work by the Strasbourg firm of Ungerer placed there in 1933. Every day at noon (or sometimes shortly after) the figures begin to move and show scenes from the history of Messina, including the handing-over of the legendary letter of protection from the Madonna to Messina.

2: Annunziata dei Catalani Church

During this 3-hour tour, you will have the opportunity to see the most important and beautiful spots in the city such as Catalanis Church.
The Church of the Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani (Catalanis Church) is a church in Messina, Sicily (Italy). It is an example of Norman architecture on Sicily. The church dates from the 12th century when Sicily was under Norman rule. Built on top of the ruins of an older temple dedicated to Neptune, the church is an example of Sicilian Norman architecture with its mix of different cultural elements. The church displays influences from Arab and Byzantine architecture and also contains Roman elements. Particularly the apse is unusually well-preserved. The name of the church derives from merchants from Catalonia who established a presence in Messina in the 16th century.

3: Cathedral of Messina

Messina Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Messina, Sicily. Formerly the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Messina, it became in 1986 the archiepiscopal seat of the Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. In June 1947 Pope Pius XII granted it the status of a minor basilica.

4: Fontana di Orione

Orions Fountain in Messina is the work of one of Michelangelos students, Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli (1507-1563). Born in Florence, Montorsoli was a friar of the Servite Order as well as a sculptor and an architect; the Senate of Messina entrusted him with creating a monument to celebrate the completion of the first aqueduct in Messina, in 1547.

5: Monte di Pieta

The Palazzo del Monte di Pietà is a palace in Messina, Sicily, located on via XXIV Maggio. It was built in 1616 for the Arciconfraternita Degli Azzurri to designs of Natale Masuccio. The building was severely damaged during the earthquake of 1908.

6: Tempio Votivo di Cristo Re

You can already recognize this magnificent dome from the ship. It sits on a hill overlooking the town of Messina. This building from 1937 is a burial site for thousands of Italians killed during World War I. Every day at sunset the huge bell rings to commemorate the soldiers sacrifice.

7: Santuario della Madonna di Montalto

In 1282, the Virgin Mary appeared in a dream to a friar named Nicholas. During the apparition she promised to send a white dove to the Caperrina hill where she wanted a church built in her name. The cornerstone for the Sanctuary of St Mary of Montalto was laid in 1295 by Queen Constance of Sicily. It was a monastery for Cistercian nuns from 1389 until 1866. The Santuario della Madonna di Montalto was severely damaged during the 1908 earthquake and rebuilt in 1930. This view of the bell tower gives you a hint at the beauty of this Gothic and Romanesque structure.

8: Palazzo Zanca

Zanca Palace is the town hall palace that was rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake, but its location in the urban structure is very old. In fact, it first construction can be traced back to the 17th century during Spanish domination. The building occupies an area of over twelve thousand square meters. The eclectic style refers to the nineteenth-century classicism. The decorations, all in Comiso stone, were made by Giarrizzo from Palermo and Antonio Bonfiglio from Messina, author of the bronze bust of Antonello da Messina, placed on the landing of the grand staircase.
Exploring Messina means also experiencing flavours, trying local products and typical dishes. You can add tasting experience to your tour.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This Etna off-road tour is a semi-private experience to explore the northern slopes of Mt Etna with a volcanological guide by 4WD bus. The highest active volcano in Europe offers you incomparable views of the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, as well as the possibility of looking -from a very close and safe location- the central active craters of the volcano. Enjoy the experience of walking on ancient lava flows and discover the always-changing landscape of a living volcano.
Starting from the tourist station of Piano Provenzana, located at about 1800 mt above sea level, we are going to drive with our Etna off-road bus authorized by the Etna Park Authority in the middle of ancient lava flows, also admiring ancient extinct craters, to arrive at the Volcanological Observatory that was built in 1977 at about 2850 mt above sea level. From here you are going to start a 15-minute hike that will take you to the end of the promontory of Pizzi Deneri, embracing a wide view of the Sicilian coast. You are also going to admire from a very short distance and safely the central volcanic cone where the main craters are.
On the way back, we are going to stop at 1.900 mt to explore the area.

Messina (Pass by)

During "The Godfather" tour, starting from your accommodation or Port in Messina, you will walk along the authentic picturesque streets of Savoca and Forza d'Agro remained unchanged since the movie was made, visit ancient churches, famous Bar Vitelli where Michael Corleone asked Apollonia's father her hand in marriage, church where they married, and other movie locations. Later, you will enjoy a traditional lunch, consisting of locally produced cheeses, salami, prosciutto, caponata, parmigiana, olives, extra virgin olive oil and fresh home-made bread and lemon sorbet, while having a with romantic sea view from the terrace.

1: Savoca

First stop is Savoca, an unspoilt medieval town that acted as stand-in for Corleone where Michael was hiding out during the "going to the mattresses" time.
You will walk to an ancient church of Santa Lucia, where Michael and Apollonia were married kneeling in the doorway. Then follow the same path down the hill that the newlyweds did, and visit another old church dating back to the 13th century. Walking along the fabulous streets of Savoca, on a good day you can also meet some actors - for example a lady who played Apollonia's mother and who still lives in Savoca.

Later, optionally you can visit a family-owned restaurant and at a terrace with romantic sea view taste local Sicilian wines with traditional food (locally produced cheeses, salami, prosciutto, caponata, olives, extra virgin olive oil, fresh home-made bread, home made lemon granita - everything is prepared with organic ingredients of local origin - "km0"!).

Bar Vitelli (Pass by)

In Savoca you will visit Bar Vitelli that looks exactly the way it did in the movie, and see the exact spot where Al Pacino informed Apollonia's father that his name was Michael Corleone, and that "there are people who'd pay a lot of money for that information, but then your daughter would lose a father instead of gaining a husband". Here you can take pictures with an authentic Sicilian shotgun "Lupara", see pictures from the movie and a mirror monument for Coppola, enjoy panoramic view of the Mediterranean opening from the square where the wedding ceremony scene was shot, purchase The Godfather souvenirs, and - "leave the gun, take the cannoli" - taste original Sicilian cannoli and lemon granita at Bar Vitelli.

2: Forza d'Agro

The tour will continue in Forza d'Agro, another stunning hilltop town with a "Godfather" connection. You will walk the abandoned streets ("Where have all men gone?" - "They're dead from vendettas"), explore the historic square and see the pictures from the movie, visit ancient churches, see the piazza where young Vito Andolini (later Vito Corleone) escaped Don Ciccio's men by hiding in a basket on a donkey's back, walk up to see the remains of a 12th century Norman castle, admire delightful panoramic view of the Ionian coastline, and get a flavour of the Sicilian pastoral lifestyle remained unchanged since ancient times.

3: Taormina

The last stop of our Tour will be Taormina where we will spend about 3 hours. It will be possible to admire the beautiful views and the characteristic Greek-Roman Amphitheater (the cost of entry to the theater is not included in the price).

I will take you to admire the beautiful beautiful island from the famous balcony of Taormina, from which it will be possible to take photos that will leave you with a unique memory of the place. 3: Craters Silvestri of Mount Etna

After that, we will visit Silvestri Craters.

The Monti Silvestri are two inactive craters formed as a result of the Mount Etna eruption of 1892. Situated just a few steps from the Rifugio Sapienza in Nicolosi at about 1,900 m above sea level, the craters are named after Prof. Orazio Silvestri. Half of all visitors of Mount Etna travel via Nicolosi on the southern slopes to see this highest active volcano in Europe. A walk up and around the Silvestri craters is a good solution for all those who have problems with their heart or lungs and cannot go further up to the summit. The volcanic landscape around the craters is impressive and of a rare natural beauty.

Again time for photos before we head to one of the wineries of Mount Etna, a pleasant time dedicated to visiting the winery. The visit includes the history of the local grapes, the way of vinification, and of course tasting of different wines.
