WHAT TO EXPECT

Begin your tour in central Pisa, where youll join up with your guide and get comfortable on your wheels with a 30-minute Segway training session. Pop in headphones so you can hear your guide clearly and then set off into the medieval streets.

Your first stop is at the Piazza dei Miracoli, also known as the Field of Dreams. Pass the Baptistery, the largest in Italy, and learn about the intricate pulpit inside the Romanesque design of the Duomo. Snap some photos with the Leaning Tower of Pisa and discover how the structure came to have its famous tilt.

Ex Monastero delle Benedettine (Pass by)

Monastero delle Benedettine (Benedictine Monastery): built in 1393, it was home to the Benedictine nuns until the 60s. Currently, the Monastery hosts Italian and foreign students and teachers from the University of Pisa and a convention hall. The current Neo-Gothic facade dates from 1850.

Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina (Pass by)

Chiesa S. Maria della Spina: the Pisan Gothic small church of S. Maria della Spina was built in 1230 on the riverbed of the Arno. Starting from 1333, the church kept as a relic a thorn of the crown of Christ, now exhibited in the church of S. Chiara. In 1871, the building was completely dismantled and rebuilt at a higher altitude; on this occasion the church was raised by about one meter.

Palazzo Agostini (Pass by)

Palazzo Agostini Venerosi della Seta (Agostini Palace): this palazzo was built between the late 14th century and early 15th centuries, but was only acquired by Mariano and Pietro Agostini, silk merchants, in 1496, who gave it its name. The façade, totally clad in Gothic terracotta mouldings, in the shapes of plants, human heads and heraldic designs, with double and triple mullioned windows, and the open loggia (later closed) on the top floor, make it one of the most important examples of domestic Gothic architecture in Tuscany. At street level is the Caffè dellUssero founded in 1775 (the palazzo is also known in Pisa as Palazzo dellUssero); it was the meeting place of famous scientists and erudite Italians and foreigners.

Ponte di Mezzo (Pass by)

Ponte di Mezzo: The bridge is 89 metres long has a single arch 12.5metres high; it was constructed after being bombed by the Allied forces in WWII in reinforced concrete and faced with white Verona stone. Since the second half of the 17thcentury, the "Gioco del Ponte" has taken place on the bridge. It involves a struggle between teams from the two parts of Pisa, north and south of the river (Mezzogiorno and Tramontana), to win the bridge by pushing a heavy float into the adversarys side of the bridge.

Palazzo Pretorio (Pass by)

Palazzo Pretorio (Preatorian Palace): The Government building or Palazzo Pretorio, Headquarters of the Government Auditor and the Civil and Criminal Chancery, was one of the buildings involved in the process of renovation undertaken in the 18th and 19th centuries, that aimed to alter the medieval appearance of the town. It was reconstructed in 1953 by Sanpaolesi, who only partially based it on Gherardescas design. The ground floor loggia was extended to the whole length of the building and the clock tower was built taller.

Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Reale (Pass by)

Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace): Built between 1583 and 1587 by will of the Grand Duke Francis I de Medici, to a plan by the Florentine architect Bernardo Buontalenti, the palace is situated in a prestigious area of Pisa, where the residence of the Marquis of Tuscia stood in the 10th century. In the18th and 19th centuries the palace continued to be the residence of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. Peter Leopold I particularly enjoyed spending the winter here because of the mild climate. After the unification of Italy, the Savoy family occasionally stayed here, giving it its present name.

The leaning Tower had to be Cathedral's bell tower and its construction started on 9th August 1173: to complete its realization, were necessary 199 years!
We'll discover the real reason about its inclination and some stories about its life connected to science and modern history.

3: Cattedrale di Pisa

Saint Mary Cathedral is the most important religious building of the city and represents Pisa's prosperity during Middle Age. Its construction started in 1063 and once its realization was finished, it was restored several times.
Its façade shows very well Pisa's artistic riches when the city was a Maritime Republic and traded along the Mediterranean Sea and Asia.
Its interior it's a mix between more artistic styles, a very good testimony about the passage of centuries in Pisa.

4: Battistero di San Giovanni

Entitled to Saint John the Baptist, is the biggest one in Italy with a height of 54 metres. About its construction were necessary more than 200 years!
Thanks to its height it was a reference point for all the people who arrived to Pisa from north.
This is also the edifice where the great scientist Galileo Galilei was baptised in 1564.

5: Piazza dei Cavalieri

During Roman Age this was the old Roman forum and after was the political and administrative centre in medieval Pisa. After the middle of 16th century the square became the headquarters of the Order of the Knights of St. Stephen.
Nowadays the former Town Hall called "Palazzo della Carovana" houses the main building of the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, a university founded by Napoleon Bonaparte and modeled after the Ecole Normale Superieure of Paris.
Pisa's citizens consider it as the true square of the city because is less touristic than Piazza del Duomo.

6: Lungarni di Pisa

These are the riverbanks of Arno, the fifth longest river in Italy and the main one in Tuscany.

11: Piazza dei Cavalieri

Piazza dei Cavalieri was the heart of political life in Pisa. The second most famous team after Piazza dei Miracoli. Today it's the seat of the prestigious Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa for higher education. It is also the location of the tower where Count Ugolino della Gherardesca met his demise in 1289, later famously featured in Canto 33 of Dante's Inferno.
