WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Trieste Terminal Passeggeri

We will meet at the cruise terminal (or another preferred accommodation) and head directly to Ljubljana in a smooth- relaxing ride trough picturesque landscape of Slovenia. We aacept only up to 20 persons in group.

2: Ljubljana Old Town

As we arrive to Ljubljana you will be dropped off in the heart of the old town in the best starting location to explore this amazing green town on your own. You will have up to 2 hours of free time to see the towns most important buildings and monuments such as Ljubljana castle, Ljubljana Town Hall, the Triple Bridge, the Shoemakers Bridge, Ljubljana Cathedral, the Robba Fountain, Preseren Square, Congress Square and Ljubljanica river (where the feeling of the old town life is felt the most) and other attractions. You will also have enough time to do some shopping in the old town or just sit and have an nice glass of great Slovenian wine or a cup of coffee at the banks of Ljubljanica river.

3: Lake Bled

After approx 2 hours we will meet again and head directly to lake Bled. On the way to lake Bled (45 minutes) you will get all the important information about Bled from your driver/ escort. As we will arrive you will once again be dropped off at the best location and will have a chance and enough time (up to to 2 hours) to explore and absorb this alpine fairytale gem on your own. Whether you will just walk around the lake, take a Pletna boat to the island with the Gothic church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, or go and visit the Bled cadtle with its amazing views or have a glass of amazing Slovenian wine, or try famous Bled Kremsnita cake we assure you that you will stay speechless by visiting this one of the oldest Slovenian tourist resorts under the Alps with a guardian fairytale castle on the top of the breathtaking cliff. You will also have a chance to take some beautiful photos.

1: Castle of Duino

The guide will pick you up at Cruise Ship Port of Trieste or at your hotel in Trieste.
After 30 minutes of the scenic drive along the coast of the Gulf of Trieste, you will arrive to the first castle to be seen the impressive Old Duino Castle.
Duino Castle (Castello di Duino) is a fourteenth-century fortification located in Duino (municipality of Duino-Aurisina), near Trieste, Italy, on the cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. The building commenced in 1389 at the order of the Wallsee family. The ruins of an older castle built in the eleventh century by the Patriarch of Aquileia are located on the grounds. In the nineteenth century, it became one of two residences for Prince Alexander von Thurn und Taxis and his wife Princess Marie of the Czech branch of the House of Thurn und Taxis. While not the wealthiest of the Thurn und Taxis line, Alexander and Marie supported artists and writers, among these, included Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke.

2: Historical Museum of the Miramare Castle

After the visit to this Italian residence of an old aristocratic family, you will go to the next stop -Miramare Castle.
The Strada Costiera (Coastal Road) from Duino Castle is the most spectacular route to Miramare Castle.
This majestic white castle overlooks the sea and surrounded by a large park full of unique and exotic tree species.
The fairy tale beauty of the castle and the park, together with the sad and romantic story of the young imperial couple who owned this castle, still attracts tourists from all over the world and has made it one of the most visited destinations in Europe.
After the guided tour of the castle, you will have a short break for some snacks or light lunch in the cafe nearby with a wonderful view.

3: Canale Grande

Drive back to Trieste to have a 1-hour walking tour in the historic center of the city and see the main sights.
Realized between 1754 and 1766 by Matteo Pirona, the Canal Grande was a key element of the new urban plan that led to the construction of Borgo Teresiano. Located in the heart of the historic old town, not far from the Piazza Unita, the Grand Canal is a small waterway that has stood to allow boats direct access into the city to unload their cargo. Approximately 200m in length, the canal stretched from the Riva Tre Novembre to the Via S. Spiridione and ends at the Piazza SantAntonio Nuovo and the Chiesa di SantAntonio Taumaturgo. This pleasant waterway is crossed by three bridges and has numerous boats moored at each side.

4: Molo Audace - Gia ""Molo S. Carlo""

Molo Audace, formerly Molo San Carlo, is a place dear to the hearts of Trieste's inhabitants. This walkway extending about 200 metres out to sea is a magical place for a stroll and a breath of fresh air at any time of day and in any season, a place of enchanting autumnal sunsets, when the buildings on the shores are tinged with red. If you fancy a real challenge you can run to the wind-rose at its far end, and try to remain standing against the Bora winds of up to 100 km/h! The pier was built between 1743 and 1751 on the wreck of the San Carlo, a ship that sank in the harbour. Originally 95 metres long and connected to land by a small wooden bridge, the pier has been gradually lengthened and now measures 246 metres.

5: Piazza Unita D'italia

This colossal square lies at the forefront of the historic old town and faces out towards the Adriatic Sea. Due to its immense size, the Piazza Unita Italia is known as the largest square situated next to the sea in Europe. Several prestigious and important buildings line the square including the Town Hall, the Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino, the Palazzo del Governo and the Palazzo Pitteri Each of which features a stunning design and beautiful architecture. Aside from the buildings, there is also several impressive monuments and statues placed at various intervals in the square In particular, the two iron sculptured columns that frame the entrance of the Piazza.

6: Narodni Dom - National Hall

Designed by architect Giuseppe Bruni, Trieste's City Hall was built between 1873 and 1875 on the site previously occupied by the Magistrate's Palace and the Loggia with a bell tower, for use by the city council with a gallery for the public. The eclectic style facade gives the building a monumental grandeur, forming a beautiful scenic backdrop of a stage, open to the sea. The clock tower rises from the central section with two bronze Moors (sculpted by Franco Asteo and replaced by copies in 1972) that locals call "Michez and Jachez striking the hours". The two wings, somewhat simpler, complete the building in a tight game of fornices and chiaroscuro.

7: Teatro Romano di Trieste

Trieste has a long history and everywhere in the city, there are various pieces of bygone eras. One such relic is the Roman Amphitheatre that is located on the Via del Teatro Romano In the center of the historic old town and only a stones throw from the Piazza Unita Italia. This ancient structure is in a fantastic condition and the original seating and stage area is still visible together with various columns and walls. Original statues from the theatre are now on display at one of the local museums but some are still visible at the sight. When walking through the city of Trieste, this theatre is a must-see and is a fine example of Roman architecture.
The tour will end at Cruise Port or near your hotel.

Meet your guide at Cruise Ship Port or at your hotel in Trieste. Walk to the top of the hill of San Giusto to see the foundations of Trieste: the Roman ruins, the beloved cathedral and the castle. Take a walk along the castles walls to enjoy a charming view of the entire city.
When it comes to Trieste landmarks, the Castello di San Giusto is hard to miss. I mean, its literally on a hill visible throughout the city. Even though its history is frankly uneventful, who can pass the chance to visit a castle? Built by the Austrians to protect the city from the Venetians, it never saw any real action. But thats good I guess because it means that this 15th-century castle has survived well intact. A few euros will let you inside, where youll find some museum exhibits, but more importantly city views. The castle walls are where the best views of Trieste are at.

2: Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire

Trieste Cathedral (Basilica cattedrale di San Giusto Martire), dedicated to Saint Justus, is a Roman Catholic cathedral and the main church of Trieste, in northern Italy. It is the seat of the Bishop of Trieste. The first religious edifice on the site was built in the 6th century on some Roman propylaea, using part of the existing structure. Perhaps the entrance to a monument, this was commonly known as the Capitoline Temple, as a pyramidal altar with the symbols of the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva) had been found inside it. Of the hall there remains part of the mosaic floor, integrated into the present-day floor, which contains markings of the outer walls of the early Christian building. Soon after it was opened for worship, the church was destroyed in the Lombard invasion.

3: Arco di Riccardo

Probably dating from the 1st century AD, the Arch of Riccardo, in the heart of old Trieste, is a Roman gate in the ancient walls of Tergeste that were built by Augustus in 33 BC. Various origins have been attributed to the name Riccardo. Some recall legendary events like the passage of Charlemagne or Richard the Lionheart into this city, while other, perhaps more reliable, sources suggest a derivation of the term "Cardo", the Latin name of one of the two main axes around which Roman towns were built, the other being the Decumanus.

4: Teatro Romano di Trieste

Walk down the hill to the Medieval Trieste that was previously surrounded by walls and towers, you and your guide will pass the Roman theatre.
Trieste has a long history and everywhere in the city, there are various pieces of bygone eras. One such relic is the Roman Amphitheatre that is located on the Via del Teatro Romano In the center of the historic old town and only a stones throw from the Piazza Unita Italia. This ancient structure is in a fantastic condition and the original seating and stage area is still visible together with various columns and walls. Original statues from the theatre are now on display at one of the local museums but some are still visible at the sight. When walking through the city of Trieste, this theatre is a must-see and is a fine example of Roman architecture.

5: Narodni Dom - National Hall

Designed by architect Giuseppe Bruni, Trieste's City Hall was built between 1873 and 1875 on the site previously occupied by the Magistrate's Palace and the Loggia with a bell tower, for use by the city council with a gallery for the public. The eclectic style facade gives the building a monumental grandeur, forming a beautiful scenic backdrop of a stage, open to the sea. The clock tower rises from the central section with two bronze Moors (sculpted by Franco Asteo and replaced by copies in 1972) that locals call "Michez and Jachez striking the hours". The two wings, somewhat simpler, complete the building in a tight game of fornices and chiaroscuro.

6: Port of Trieste

The port and harbour of Trieste are truly impressive. Practically the entire coastline next to Trieste is occupied by either the public harbour or the commercial shipping operations These two parts of the city offer some truly fantastic and interesting sights. Near the Piazza Venezia is the main harbour and this area is filled with beautiful yachts, sailing boats and fishing boats. Furthermore, the port area on the southwestern section of the coast offers a great insight into how a busy shipping operation works You can see large cargo ships entering the docks and being offloaded.

7: Canale Grande

Then move to the Borgo Teresiano strolling along the Grand Canal.
Realized between 1754 and 1766 by Matteo Pirona, the Canal Grande was a key element of the new urban plan that led to the construction of Borgo Teresiano. Located in the heart of the historic old town, not far from the Piazza Unita, the Grand Canal is a small waterway that has stood to allow boats direct access into the city to unload their cargo. Approximately 200m in length, the canal stretched from the Riva Tre Novembre to the Via S. Spiridione and ends at the Piazza SantAntonio Nuovo and the Chiesa di SantAntonio Taumaturgo. This pleasant waterway is crossed by three bridges and has numerous boats moored at each side.

8: Chiesa Serbo Ortodossa Di San Spiridione

On your way, you will see the Serbian and Greek Orthodox churches.
The Church was built between 1861 and 1869, on the basis of a project by Lombard architect Carlo Maciachini, on the site of a previous temple built in 1753 and demolished in 1861 because it had been declared unsafe. It can host 1600 believers. The building features a Greek-cross plan. It displays the same Byzantine style as Eastern churches and is characterized by a central dome, which is higher than the four bell towers. It also presents semi-spherical grey-blue caps and wide mosaic decorations on the façades drawn by Milanese artists Giuseppe and Pompeo Bertini. The structure is covered in stone from Karst and Istria quarries, as well as Carrara and Verona marbles.
Together with your guide, you can stop in some nice cafes and bars, where you can have a drink or a snack.

9: Molo Audace - Gia ""Molo S. Carlo""

Take a stroll on the Molo Audace.
Molo Audace, formerly Molo San Carlo, is a place dear to the hearts of Trieste's inhabitants. This walkway extending about 200 metres out to sea is a magical place for a stroll and a breath of fresh air at any time of day and in any season, a place of enchanting autumnal sunsets, when the buildings on the shores are tinged with red. If you fancy a real challenge you can run to the wind-rose at its far end, and try to remain standing against the Bora winds of up to 100 km/h! The pier was built between 1743 and 1751 on the wreck of the San Carlo, a ship that sank in the harbour. Originally 95 metres long and connected to land by a small wooden bridge, the pier has been gradually lengthened and now measures 246 metres.

10: Borsa Vecchia

Located next to the Piazza Unita Italia, the Piazza dell Borsa is a great place to take in the local life and enjoy an excellent meal. During the 19th century, this square actually served as the citys economic center and the chamber of commerce building is actually located at the far end and features a beautiful columned entrance with an ornate marble pediment. Triangular in shape, at the end closest to the Piazza Unita, there are several restaurants and shops, whilst in the middle is a decorative statue of the sea god Neptune. Markets and small fairs are sometimes held here and it is a great place for shopping and mingling.

11: Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia

And end the tour on Piazza Unità dItalia, the best place to feel the citys vibrant atmosphere.
This colossal square lies at the forefront of the historic old town and faces out towards the Adriatic Sea. Due to its immense size, the Piazza Unita Italia is known as the largest square situated next to the sea in Europe. Several prestigious and important buildings line the square including the Town Hall, the Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino, the Palazzo del Governo and the Palazzo Pitteri Each of which features a stunning design and beautiful architecture. Aside from the buildings, there is also several impressive monuments and statues placed at various intervals in the square In particular, the two iron sculptured columns that frame the entrance of the Piazza.

During our tour we will visit 3 famous Istrian villages where we will taste local liquors, wines, cheeses, truffle products, and marmalades. Hum, the smallest town in the world, is located in the heart of Istria that claims only 20 inhabitants. Your visit to Hum will be like a beautiful fairy tale of small Istrian towns. This hidden, picturesque region of Istria is extremely friendly to all visitors who come to marvel in the sights the town has to offer. According to local legend, Hum was built with the stones left over when giants were building towns in the Mirna River valley, an area in central Istria that includes wonderful mountain towns such as Motovun, Ro, and Bale. Apart from being famous for being the smallest town in the world, Hum recently became popular for biska, a spiced brandy made with mistletoe according to an old Hum recipe.

2: Hilltop Walled Ancient City of Motovun

Northern Istria, located high above the Mirna River, is home to arguably the most attractive and famous medieval town in the country - Motovun. This fascinating city that lies on top of a hill is the characteristic symbol for the inner heart of Istria. The bell tower, which was built in the 13th century in a Romanesque-Gothic style, dominates the center of the historic town from its position adjacent to St Stephens 17th century parish church. There are many other beautiful historic buildings that surround it. Motovuns forest is a particularly good hunting ground for truffles, the alleged aphrodisiac fungus which grows underground and is prized for its distinctive aroma. Vineyards surround the town from all sides; Istrias finest wines are produced from the grapes of these vineyards. The whole region is sprinkled with superb restaurants and konobe.

3: Groznjan Hilltop Village of Artists

Gronjan is a small Istrian town that holds a great cultural significance not only to Croatia but worldwide. Surrounded by green hills and magical white soil, this town is a must-see for those who want to discover the treasure trove that is Istria. Because of its interesting history, Gronjan is rich in ancient churches, prehistoric sites, medieval castles, magnificent palaces, and many other historic structures whose past glory was recovered once again through restoration. Its white soil feeds the many neighboring vineyards and olive groves. Because of all this, the area of Gronjan is ripe with agritourism and many taverns and restaurants offer traditional Istrian cuisine to their guests. Gronjan is also home to several national and international artists. There are as many as 28 ateliers in this small town; there is also the City Art Gallery which hosts artists works from around the world (even the well-known Imaginary Film Academy found its home here). In the summer, all of Gronjan becomes a stage for world renowned jazz and classical musicians, as well as many of the other artists who have discovered the true joy of creation here.

Your visit to the castle allows access to the apartments of Maximilian and his wife Carlota of Belgium, the guests rooms, the room dedicated to telling the story of how the castle and park were built, the apartment inhabited by Duke Amedeo da Aosta with furniture in the 1930s rationalist style. Do take note of the music room where Carlota used to play the piano, the series of paintings by Cesare dell'Acqua telling the story of Miramare, and the Throne Room, recently restored to its original splendor.

The beautiful park offers a botanic stroll of enormous interest together with a variety of landscaping elements, such as the important decorative sculpture collection by the famous sculpture firm Moritz Geiss from Berlin. You can also visit the stables the recently restored building is now used for temporary exhibitions as well as the historical greenhouses and the castelletto, which retains part of its original decoration on the first floor

Most of the residents still live there and give this town its unique atmosphere. Whether you will go up to see the church or just sit under the statue of Giuseppe Tartini - a famous violinist born in Piran, or wonder around just by walking its narrow streets, visit the towns market or have a glass of amazing Slovenian wine at the coast you will for sure fall in love with this amazing old town.
