At 14h p.m, we begin of our course and preparation. We have fun preparing 3 plats: 2 courses for dinner, and the dessert. With our chef, we prepare Malagasy food, with ingredients not thrown together in quite this fashion in any other country in the world.

We prepare all the dinner with him. And around 19h (7pm), we enjoy our hard-earned dinner with the chef!

Today we offer you a day trip to two palaces. The Ambohimanga Rova is a half day-trip out of Antananarivo. It was the home of the first Malagasy king to unite the nation, King Andrianampoinimerina. Its a fascinating story of murders and conquering and intrigue, the local guides are skilled at telling the story in many languages, and the scenery is very special. The palace was used as a holiday home by subsequent members of the royal family until the last queen was exiled by the French colonial power and some interesting artefacts remain. Return back to Tana for lunch at the Cafe du Musee, and after lunch visit to Palace number 2, the Rova Manjakamiadana This palace was home to the royal family until exile. It was burned in a politically motivated arson attack in 1995 and is under renovation, nevertheless it is a fascinating story, in an amazing position, with incredible views around the city and rice fields as far as the eye can see.

1: Royal Hill of Ambohimanga

Ambohimanga is the hill-top palace of King Andriampoinimerina, the first Malagasy king to unite the country, located approximately 24 km northeast of tAntananarivo. The hill and the rova are considered the most significant symbol of the cultural identity of the Merina people and the most important and best-preserved monument of the Merina Kingdom. The walled historic village includes residences and burial sites of several key monarchs. The royal compound is surrounded by a complex system of defensive ditches, stone walls and gateways sealed by stone discs. It remains largely intact and contains the royal tombs, house of King Andrianampoinimerina, summer palace of Queen Ranavalona II, and sites that figured in key royal rituals such as the sacrificial zebu pen, royal bath and main courtyard.

You will hear fascinating stories about the King and his foibles (such as having the swimming pool emptied and refilled every day by 60 virgins)...

2: Musee de la Photographie de Madagascar

Created in 2013, the Museum of Photography of Madagascar has given itself the mission of digitizing the photographs taken in Madagascar between 1860 and 1960 to preserve Malagasy photographic heritage and to promote the ownership by the Malagasy people of their history.

The Museum offers visitors the following spaces:

Screening rooms
Four projection rooms show thematic films, made from photographs taken from the Museum's database. You will find a film on the history of the main Malagasy cities, another on the great characters of the 19th century in Antananarivo, another on the golden age of photography in the 1930s in Madagascar. The films are offered in several languages, depending on the audience present.

Exhibition spaces
A large exhibition hall and the Museum's garden can accommodate temporary exhibitions. A special place is thus dedicated to welcoming contemporary photographers, whether Malagasy or foreign:

3: Manjakamiadana

The Rova of Antananarivo is a royal palace complex that served as the home of the sovereigns of the Kingdom in the 17th, 18th and the 19th centuries. Located in the city of Antananarivo, the Rova occupies the highest point on Analamanga, the highest of Antananarivo's many hills. The largest building on the site was built for Queen Ranavalona I, between 18391841. In 1867 the palace was encased in stone.

A fire on the night of 6 November 1995 damaged all the structures in the Rova complex. The chapel, tombs, and other buildings have since been fully restored. The interior of the Rova remains unfinished and the palace remains closed to the public while the current president of Madagascar creates various new structures in the grounds of the Rova.

Your guide will give you the intriguing tale of Merina history, including that of the cruel queen who threw Christians from the cliff-top rolled in carpets, and is contemporarily known as "the female Caligula!!".

1: Lemurs' Park

Lemurs Park is a lemur reserve and a botanical park located 25 km from the center of Antananarivo on the RN 1 to Imeritsiatosika, Madagascar. It is an ideal place to discover the lemur, an unique and endearing animal, symbol of the endemic fauna of the big island.The park was created in order to raise public awareness of the preservation of these amazing animals and to allow their reintroduction in their natural environment. Thus, over the years and births, lemurs born in the park are reintroduced in their natural habitat. The 5-hectare estate is home to 7 species of lemurs from different regions of Madagascar, as well as other representatives of the Malagasy fauna and flora.

2: Rova - Le Palais de la Reine

The Rova of Manjakamiadana, also known as the Queen's Palace, is a former official residence of the rulers of Madagascar in the 19th century. Located in Antananarivo, this historic monument was once a symbol of the island's political power. After independence, the Rova ceased to perform its political function, but it has become an important part of the national heritage of the Republic of Madagascar.

The Rova was transformed into a museum to allow visitors to discover the history and culture of Madagascar. On November 6, 1995, an arson attack destroyed the art collections, interiors and roofs of the historic building.

3: Andafiavaratra Palace

(Not open on Monday) Andafiavaratra Museum or Andafiavaratra Palace, is a historical palace located in the quarter of Andafiavaratra, near the Palace of Justice and the Rova(Queens Palace), in Antananarivo. It was built in 1872 on the orders of Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony, by the architect Pool. This imposing multi-story building was constructed of stone and brick and is characterized by a distinctive glass dome and towers at the four corners. Unfortunately, the palace was destroyed in a fire in 1976, losing its familiar silhouette and its historical and cultural treasures. However, it was faithfully rebuilt from 1985 and is now open to the public as a museum. Visitors can discover objects rescued from the Queen's Palace fire, as well as other historical and cultural artifacts from Madagascar.

(Not open on Monday)The Museum of Photography of Madagascar is a tourist attraction located in the Haute Ville quarter in Antananarivo. This museum opened in 2018 in the Maison des Maires in Anjohy, whose main objective is to share the history of Madagascar through rare images, to preserve and enhance the photographic heritage of the Big Island, and to allow the Malagasy people to take ownership of their photographic heritage. The Museum has nearly 4,500 historical photographs of Madagascar, ranging from pre-colonization to the independence of the Big Island in 1960. The Museum of Photography of Madagascar is a place of discovery and teaching of the history of Madagascar, a journey through time through rare and fascinating images.

The Cathedral of Andohalo, also known as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is a Catholic church located in the Andohalo quarter, in the upper part of the city of Antananarivo. This cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Antananarivo and is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

Construction of the cathedral began on 8 May 1873 to the plans of the architect Alphonse Taïx, a French Jesuit priest. It was completed on 17 December 1890 and was classified as a historical monument in January 1964.

Gare de Soarano (Pass by)

Soarano Station, situated at the north of Avenue de l'Indépendance, is a historic building in the city of Antananarivo. Built between 1908 and 1910, it was designed in the style of the stations of the XIXth century by the architect Fouchard. The name Soarano, which means "good water", was given to it because of its location on the site of an ancient fountain. After a complete renovation, the Soarano station has been restored to its former glory and now houses a restaurant, shops and some services. Visitors can enjoy the architecture of this historic building and take advantage of its modern facilities or do some shopping.

Independence Avenue (Pass by)

The Avenue de l'Indépendance is a must for any visitor to Antananarivo, decorated with arcaded buildings, the street is animated by the many small shops and traffics that take place there, such as merchants of sambos, single cigarettes, second-hand mobile phones and all sorts of small business.

On the other side you will find, the pavilions of Analakely, vestiges of the open-air market called Zoma Market, still hosting a market where you can find all sorts of handicrafts. And also, the big market of the city.

Recently opened, the Rainilaiarivony Museum, located in Amboditsiry, is the former Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony's residence, which covers more than 3 hectares and was built in 1863 by the Scottish architect James Cameron, and has been renovated while preserving its authenticity. The museum has seven exhibition halls which present Rainilaiarivony's biography, his daily life, important official documents as well as furniture and clothing to illustrate the lifestyle of the time.

WHAT TO EXPECT
In the morning, between 7am and 9am, your shared tour heads from your hotel toward Andasibe Rainforest, Vakona Park, the Eastern villages and rivers, and glimpse some of the urban cityscape of Antananarivo (Tana) en route. All in all an essential day in Madagascar for a visitor, and one of everyone's favorite. Andasibe is the most visited rainforest in Madagascar, and you will arrive there in the late morning.

Later in the day, the tour will resume on its way to the Vakona Reserve, which is well-known as the most accessible and famous rainforest in Madagascar, the shelter of the lemur "Indri-Indri". This species is considered to be the biggest primate living in Madagascar. The reserve is also characterized by spectacular technicolor orchids. In the park, there are 12 different species of lemurs (nocturnal and diurnal), but also more than 110 bird species. Tenrecs (sort of hedgehog) and chameleons will cross your path regularly too, and you can enjoy primary forest curiosities such as trees, ferns, lichens, epiphyte orchids, medicinal plants, or precious woods like Dalbergia.

In the evening, hit the road back to Tana to arrive for a late dinner in town. This trip visits the best highlights of wildlife in the range of the capital, Tana. You will be arriving back at your hotel around 11pm.
