1: Khamlia

Khamlia is a small town of just over 400 inhabitants. Located in the southeast of Morocco, at one end of the oval that forms the dunes of the Erg Chebbi, 8 km from Merzouga.
A priori it may seem like another desert town: adobe houses, mosque, Amazigh-speaking people (Berber), but it is far from resembling other towns in the area.
The inhabitants of Khamlia are mostly black people of color.
The soundtrack of Khamlia says good morning to the people one more day in the house of music, where the group "Pigeons du Sable" in addition to working, keeps alive with their voices a culture and history born from the bowels of suffering and humiliation of millions of men and women of black Africa in the era of slavery.

2: Erg Chebbi

Erg Chebbi has a length of 22 km (from north to south) and 5 km wide, and its dunes have a maximum height of 150 m. Located about 40 kilometers southeast of Erfoud, the villages located at the foot of the dunes are Hassi-Labiad and Merzouga that receive most of the tourists who visit the erg.

The dunes of Erg Chebbi reach a height of up to 150 meters in some places and together it extends over an area 50 kilometers from north to south and a maximum of 5 to 10 kilometers from east to west that covers the border with Algeria.

The Saf Safari Oasis is about 45km to the northwest of Merzouga by track.

The track will take us through the hamada (black, stony and arid desert), rivers of sand, dry rivers (depending on the time of year they will have more or less water) and mountainous tracks of stone and rock. We will cross extensive esplanades where nomadic settlements abound, with vegetation from the African savannah, fields of acacias and small scrub. In the tour we will cross other oases, among which we can highlight the Tisserdmine, where we will make a stop to observe the fossil deposits.

The Oasis of Saf Saf is buried in a narrow mountain gorge ... very close to the border with Algeria.

It is spectacular after the rainy season as it collects the water that comes down from the mountains, bringing life to the Saf Saf Waterfalls that continue their way to the south, through the narrow channel of the river that runs between palm trees forming small sandy beaches perfect for bathroom.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Erg Chebbi Dunes

After collecting you bright and early from your hotel, you will leave the city behind and drive into the endless fields of sand dunes.

The first stop will be to visit the nomad villages, which are usually moved from one place to another in the Erg Chebbi dunes. While you drink some tea with them, they will explain their traditions and way of life.

The first stop of the excursion is Khamlia, a small village on the edge of the desert, where the Gnawa ethnic group live. The Gnawa are originally from Central Africa, descents from the African slaves brought to Morocco.

After visiting the village, discover why Gnawa music is internationally recognized by assisting a wonderful performance. The soulful tunes blend classical Islamic music and African beats!
Our last stop it will be in Dépôt Nomad is a nomadic Shop where the Nomad's leave their products (made hand)to sell this helps them to have a little money to live their nomadic life.

After breakfast begin the drive to explore to the tiny villages around Erg Chebbi dunes such as Merzouga and Khamlia. You may also encounter desert reptiles and mammals. In Khamlia, known as the village of black people who were slaves coming from Sudan. You will be hospitably welcomed with a cup of tea (Whiskey Berber) while enjoying their spiritual Gnawa music. Leaving Khamlia our next stop is on the panoramic view of golden dunes near the Algerian border. We may stop for a cup of tea in nomad's tent behind sand dunes of erg chebbi, you will explore how they live in authentic way. Then we go for lunch in African restaurant for berber pizza, after lunch and relax a bit then we come back to the hotel where the trip started. End.
