WHAT TO EXPECT

This quad bike experience is for those wanting to experience the dunes in a relaxed way, while also learning something about the plants and animals in the Namib Desert. The tour includes many stops, where your guide will explain findings and also give you an opportunity to take plenty photos. This excursion really presents an opportunity to take in your surroundings and will allow the Namib Desert to captivate and inspire you. You will also be surprised at the amount of little critters that live in the desert. This tour is in total two and half hours long. Guests will receive a short introduction and safety briefing before departure. No experience is required and our quad bikes are extremely easy to handle. In addition, our guides will be with you every step of the way. Kids are more than welcome, and they particularly enjoy this educational tour. Kids who are too small to ride their own quad bike can ride with his/her parents or one of the guides. Come and enjoy a relaxing ride into the dunes and learn something new! Tours are not private but there is a possibility that your group will ride alone. We aim to give you an unforgettable experience in the dunes!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Our combo deals are an excellent idea for those wanting to pack as much adrenaline fun into one day as possible. You'll experience the sheer thrill of riding a quad bike through Namibia's boundless expanse of shifting sand dunes, and also get to speed down these giant dunes on a lie- down sandboard. This is a 2 hour excursion: Guests will ride to the sandboarding location on a quad, and also ride back to our facility on a quad. Guests will receive a short introduction and safety briefing before departure. No experience is required for these activities. All equipment, including the quad bikes and sand boards, are extremely easy to handle and our guides will be with you every step of the way. Stops will be made when necessary and to take photos - we certainly want you to capture this amazing experience. Kids are more than welcome. OVERVIEW

Our clients get to see some 80,000 to 100,000 Cape Fur Seals at close quarters. This is an experience of a lifetime. During October, large adult males haul out to establish breeding territories, and those that do, stay for six weeks or more. The bulls expend considerable energy reserves and lose weight establishing and maintaining territories, herding females and fighting other males. A single pup is born in late November or early December and during a 34 - day period, 90% of the pups are born. The black pups suckle soon after birth and the females remain with it for the first week. This close association establishes a strong maternal bond between the pup and its mother. The initial bonding period is very important as it enables her and the pup to identify one another amongst the thousands of other seals. Without milk from the females, the pup's chances of survival are virtually nil. When they are separated the mother bellows for her pup and miraculously they find one another.

1: Skeleton Coast

Depart from Swakopmund and travel along the Skeleton Coast in the direction of Cape Cross. En route visit some salt-pans where flamingos can be seen. Your guide will explain the nature and characteristics of these shore birds. Continue along the coast and stop to take a closer look at a ship wreck. Your guide will relate the history of this wreck. Inspect some endemic lichen-fields which occur near Cape Cross.

Proceed to Cape Cross seal reserve. Here in 1486 a Portuguese explorer named Diego Cao, the first European to set foot in Namibia, erected a stone cross in honour of King Juan of Portugal. Today there is a large colony of Cape Fur Seals which can be viewed at close quarters and is an experience of a lifetime. Since the introduction of legislation controlling the utilisation of seals in Namibia in 1922 the seal population at Cape Cross has increased to more than 250,000. Your guide will provide all relevant information about the seals.

1: Sandwich Harbour booking

After meeting in Swakopmund we drive to Walvisbay, where we meet 1/2 hour later our Walvisbay Guests. Then past the Salt Mine onto the beach, to the Dune belt at Sandwich harbor, where Sea meets Dune, and up the towering Dunes, for some really adrenaline creating moments and stunning views. Down many steep slip faces and up many tall dunes along a really exciting dune drive. You follow our guide with your car and are helped along in any situation by our guide. We guide on route help with driving techniques, communicating via Radio. Please insure your car is adequately insured and have car rental company permission to enter Sandwich. After the dune drive we go back to Walvisbay inflate tyres and back to your accommodation. Its an awesome experience.

The tour really starts at the Walvis Bay Esplanade. Here we view the Flamingos and air down our tyres. We exchange experience and learn about each others vehicle. We then go past the Pink salt lakes of the Salt Mine onto the beach and to the towering Dunes. We do the same route as our Sandwich Harbor Dune drive.

1: Namib Desert

Travel along the small-holdings on the northern bank of the Swakop River into the oldest desert of the world, the Namib Desert. Your guide will explain the origin of the Namib Desert and explain the geological and climatic conditions of this coastal desert. As we proceed further we leave every trace of civilisation behind and find ourselves surrounded by the rugged and rocky scene of the Namib Desert. Experience the "Ringing Stones" and the fascinating plants of the Namib, for example the indigenous Lithops, also known as the "Living Stones", as well as a variety of rare Lichens, and most of all, the remarkable Welwitschia plant, a living fossil which is only found in this geographical area. With a bit of luck, one can see Springbok, Klipspringer, Steenbok, Baboon, Ostriches, Ruppels Korhaan and the Trac-trac Chat.

2: Swakop River

After a pleasant lunch break, we drive along the dry riverbed of the Swakop valley which is lined with Tamarisk, Prosopis and Ana trees. We go onto a small game drive , searching for what life the harsh desert has, and sadly we have to return home.

1: Swakopmund Fat Bike Tours

On our Scenic Desert Tour you will experience the oldest desert in the world on a fat bike. On your arrival at our office you will be kitted with a fat bike to your size and helmet. After a short briefing we head off on our bikes from the center of town towards the Swakop riverbed, passing through our historic town. Once we reach the edge of town, we head down into the dry riverbed where the desert experience starts. Not long and we start climbing our first dune. From here we spend about an hour in the dunes where you will experience the thrill of riding along the famous Namib dunes including some optional adrenaline pumping downhill sections for the adventure types. The guide will also share some interesting facts about the desert and the vast life in the seemingly lifeless environment. It is truly a living desert.
The tour ends with a ride along the dry riverbed towards the coast and with the tide allows, some riding along the beach back to the office. A once in lifetime experience.

1: Spitzkoppe

We leave Henties bay and turn off into the Namib Desert heading for the Spitzkoppe. We pass some local stalls selling rock crystals and view the fascinating Bushman paintings and rock engravings. We climb up the Rock Arch and view the beautiful surrounding Dolomite rock formations. Spitzkoppe is Namibia's Matterhorn, an Inselberg and beautiful granite rock formation with a height of 1638m. After a small lunch we head back to Swakopmund

1: Namib Desert

As we travel from Swakopmund to the Spitzkoppe Mountain we pass through the oldest desert of the world, the Namib Desert. Your tour-guide will stop en route and explain the origin of the Namib Desert as well as the geological and climatic conditions of this coastal desert. As you approach the Spitzkoppe Mountain your guide will stop at some stalls where local people offer semi-precious stones for sale. You have a choice between Aquamarine, Topaz, Amethyst, Feldspar and many other semi-precious stones.

2: Spitzkoppe

Visit the Spitzkoppe, also known as the Matterhorn of Africa. This so-called "Inselberg" is a granite outcrop which rises 780m above the surrounding Namib Desert; its total height above sea level is 1728m. After passing the entrance to the Spitzkoppe Park, your tour guide will drive around the mountain and show you several spectacular rock formations like the "Rock Pool" and the "Rock Arch". The rich vegetation at the Spitzkoppe provides ample opportunity to study some of the flora of the Namib Desert, for example Vachellia (Acacia) species and "Kobas", the Butter tree, milk bush and Commiphora species, as well as 'Beesklou" and Cleome species. Several bird species can be seen, as for example the Pale-winged Starling and swallows as well as species of weaver birds. After a leisurely lunch break your guide will show you some interesting bushman paintings. Afterwards it is time for your return-journey to Swakopmund.
