Dam Square Historu Old Picture Photo
It was created in the 13th century when a dam was built around the river Amstel to prevent the Zuiderzee sea from flooding the city. While prostitution can be found all across the globe, it usually happens behind closed doors. But not in Amsterdam! In the Red Light area Known as De Wallen (pronounced Day Vaw-len) to the Dutch, youll find prostitutes offering their services, from behind a window. Along with that, the area is known for its many live sex shows, sex shops, brothels, and strip clubs. Although the area used to be quite a notorious and unsafe area, things have changed a lot over the past decades. Besides pickpockets, the area is fairly safe to visit especially during the daytime. The oldest erotic theatre in the area is Casa Rosso, which until today, can be visited for some 18+ action. Theres no such thing as an age restriction to walk through the area, however, the adult shops and adult entertainment do not allow minors.2: Nieuwmarkt- Passing by the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood with it's many historic architectural highlights and in the middle of it the former 15th century eastern entrance gateway to the city, the so-called Waag.I will stop here for some explanation.2 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: RembrandtpleinPass by this scenic lacentral located Square with a statue of the Dutch painter Rembrandt and surrrounded with restaurants, night clubs and bars.2 minutes -Admission Ticket Free4: Magere BrugCharacteristic wide wooden draw bridge over Amstel River. The building is located on a canal called the Prinsengracht, close to the Westerkerk, in central Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
During World War II, Anne Frank hid from Nazi persecution with her family and four other people in hidden rooms, in the rear building, of the 17th-century canal house, later known as the Secret Annex (Dutch: Achterhuis). She did not survive the war but her wartime diary was published in 1947. Ten years later the Anne Frank Foundation was established to protect the property from developers who wanted to demolish the block.
The museum opened on 3 May 1960. It preserves the hiding place, has a permanent exhibition on the life and times of Anne Frank, and has an exhibition space about all forms of persecution and discrimination. In 2013 and 2014, the museum had 1.2 million visitorsADDITIONAL INFOService animals allowedPublic transportation options are available nearbySuitable for all physical fitness levelsChildren must be accompanied by an adultMaximum group size per rickshaw: 2 adults with a maximum weight of 500 pounds (230 kilograms), or 2 adults and 2 small children up to 9 years old with a total weight of up to 500 pounds/230 kilogramsMost travelers can participateThis is a private tour/activity. In spring, there may be a carnival on or you can have a go on the colourful ferris wheel. In the summer months, mimers and other street performers come out to surprise unexpected onlookers.Red Light District (Pass by)It is very likely that you have heard about this neighbourhood and to be frank, everything you have heard is probably true. From brothels to sex shops to museums, the Amsterdam Red Light District has it all. But contrary to what a lot of people might think, the Amsterdam Red Light District has a very friendly atmosphere and isn't as dangerous as it used to be.Nieuwmarkt (Pass by)The lively nightspot and market square Nieuwmarkt, found in the old city centre just east of the Red Light District, has been a centre for commerce and socialising in Amsterdam since the 17th century. Created by filling in the surrounding canals, the square's location just inside the old city gate made it a popular spot for traders and shoppers looking for fresh produce. Today, Nieuwmarkt still holds a daily market as well as an organic fare market on Saturdays, but arguably its biggest draw is the amount of cafés, restaurants and coffeeshops that surround it, making this square a perfect place to spend a sunny day sitting on a terrace. The Nieuwmarkt metro stop can be found on the square, which caused quite a bit of protest during its construction but now serves as one of the city's most central and most used stops on the metro service.Rembrandtplein (Pass by)Rembrandtplein is one of the busiest squares in the city of Amsterdam. At least when it comes to nightlife and clubbing.
Originally a butter and dairy market, Rembrandtplein has long left its farm friendly origins behind and these days you are far more likely to find yourself enjoying a latte on the terrace of a café than buying milk from a farmer.Magere Brug (Pass by)The famous skinny bridge across the river Amstel and opposite of the Carré theatre, is an Old Dutch design wooden bridge known as a double-swipe (balanced) bridge. Tradition relates that the bridge was named after the sisters Mager, who were supposed to live on opposite sides of the river. They are said to have had the wooden bridge built to make it easier to visit one another. However it appears more likely, that the original bridge acquired the name from being so narrow (mager means skinny in Dutch), that it was hard for two pedestrians to pass one along another.Museumplein (Pass by)The Museumplein is a public space in the Museumkwartier neighbourhood of the Amsterdam-Zuid borough in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Amsterdammers as well as tourists enjoy sunny days, dog-walking, jogging, roller-skating, listening to music, people-watching, or just lazying in grass. AAA / CAA Member: Hard Rock Cafe Amsterdam - Skip the Line Ticket
- Type:Dining Experiences
- Duration:8 Hours
Like all great revolutions, the Hard Rock Cafe wasn't meant to succeed. It was 1971 and as the Swinging Sixties had given way to the Super Seventies, fashions and tastes were changing. Two hungry young Americans were in London and couldn't find a decent place to eat a decent burger... so they opened up a joint in the English capital. Their landlord didn't think it would last and only gave them a six-month lease. Four decades later, there are almost 200 Hard Rock Cafes in more than 50 countries worldwide.
The first T-shirt hit the streets in '74 and the first piece of memorabilia came, fittingly, by chance in '79 when Eric Clapton asked to hang his Lead II Fender guitar over his favourite bar stool and thus marked it as his spot. Today, the rock 'n' roll collection has more than 74,000 pieces and is the largest of its kind. By 1982, the Hard Rock Cafe had gone global and the rest, as they say, is history (that's still being written).

Explore two of Amsterdam's most iconic and fascinating museums on this in-depth private tour with an expert guide: the Rijksmuseum - the National Museum of the Netherlands showcasing 800 years of history and art with over 8000 pieces, and the Van Gogh Museum - which is entirely dedicated to the life and works of Vincent van Gogh.
Begin your tour with a walk through the Museumplein (museum square), a pretty park around which many of Amsterdam's impressive museums stand. Your expert private guide will take you inside the awe-inspiring Rijksmuseum - the vast National Museum of the Netherlands.
The Rijksmuseum displays everything from Neolithic artifacts to an extensive collection of Dutch masters, including Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, and Jan Steen. You'll learn the history of the Netherlands through art, and see in exquisite detail Rembrandt's masterpiece the Night Watch, beautifully lit, as well as other paintings from the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, including Vermeer's Milkmaid.
After a well-earned break, you'll visit the equally impressive Van Gogh Museum, entirely dedicated to the life and work of Vincent van Gogh. As well as featuring the work of some of his influential contemporaries, this extensive collection boasts more than 200 paintings and 500 drawings by Vincent, the tragic hero of the post-impressionist era who didn't sell a single painting in his own lifetime. Today, his works are sold for millions at auction.
The collection will take you on an in-depth journey through the life of the artist, detailing the different creative periods that characterised Van Gogh's genius and periods of instability. You'll hear about his friendships, and arguments with Gauguin - and the fateful incident with the knife and his ear. Your tour ends inside the Museum, where you are free to explore more at your own pace.

The Rijksmuseum, the impressive National Museum of the Netherlands, ranks among the world's greatest collections of art and historical artefacts, including a veritable treasure trove of art from the Dutch Golden Age. Explore the works of Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh in one of the grandest and largest museums in Amsterdam, designated the National Museum of the Netherlands.
Highlights
-Explore over 8000 pieces of art, covering 800 years of history, displayed in 80 galleries;
-Learn all about the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century in the resplendent halls of the museum;
-Admire works by its leading artists including Rembrandt, Van Dyck and Vermeer;
-Gain expert insight into the lives of the artists and the era in which they worked;
-See in exquisite and perfectly-lit detail, Rembrandt's The Night Watch, and Vermeer's The Milkmaid among other masterpieces;
-Admire more recent works by the Dutch post-impressionist painter, Vincent van Gogh and learn about his tempestuous, passionate, and ultimately tragic life;
-Be amazed by the dimensions of the museum building, a true architectural masterpiece;
-Learn about the history of the Netherlands and Amsterdam, from its humble beginnings as a fishing village, to its importance as a trading port during the 17th Century, and why the museum rests at the heart of Dutch culture today.
Inspired by the Louvre, the Dutch government decided the country needed a national museum, so the Rijksmuseum was begun in November 1798, and opened its doors over 200 years ago, in 1800 in the Hague. It was intended to detail the history of the Netherlands from 1200 - the present day and to inspire patriotism in the Dutch people.
In 1808 Louis Napoleon Bonaparte moved it to the royal palace in Amsterdam; it was again moved to the Trippenhuis - which was just too small - and finally, the architect Pierre Cuypers was commissioned to design a new building.
After much debate, the building you see today is a blend of neo-gothic and renaissance in style. The museum underwent a major renovation between 2003-2013, costing 350 million euros. Today it attracts around 3 million visitors every year!
Famous for its extensive collection of Dutch Masters of the Golden Age (1600s) you will see world-famous masterpieces including the Threatened Swan by Jan Asselijn, which was the first purchase ever made by the museum and remains a highlight of the tour, alongside the Night Watch by Rembrandt (beautifully lit in the hall created especially for the painting), the Milkmaid by Vermeer, and other works by Van Dyck, Frans Hals, Jans Steen and many more.
The museum also houses a self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh and works by more recent Dutch artists like Breitner.
You'll also see artefacts and objects detailing the history of the Netherlands from humble beginnings to one of the world leaders in trade and seafaring during the 17th century, in the grandeur of the 80 galleries, including the Cuypers Library and the Gallery of Honour.
