Experience the Norwegian lifestyle. Join us for a neighborhood hike with a true local!

We will hike to our favourite spot on top of the Geitanuken mountain. The hike up is only 20-40 minutes, and is suitable for all ages. At the top you will have stunning views of Bergen, Åsane and of course the beautiful fjord. Low effort hike with very high rewards.

After reaching the top we will stop for photos, for coffee and water, and simply take in the gorgeous views.

Our tour starts in the city of Bergen - the Gateway to the Fjords. The city was founded in 1070 and contains many historical and cultural landmarks. We will pass some of them on our way from the city and also on our return to Bergen.

2: Osteroy Municipality

Sørfjorden or the South fjord is part of the Osterfjord which is a peculiar natural phenomenon: an salt water inlet that surrounds the largest inland island in Northern Europe - Osterøy Island - enclosed by continental land. We drive along the South fjord until we come the crossroads in Trengereid. (Usually we do not stop here.)

4: Hardangervegen

Hardangervegen or the Hardanger Road is Norwegian route #7. This road is a tourist attraction in itself. We will see beautiful sights along the way: mountains, lakes and waterfalls. On the way to the Hardangerfjord we will make two photo stops at 2 waterfalls: Fossen Bratte and Steinsdalsfossen.

5: Fossen Bratte

We make a stop at Fossen Bratte waterfall 259 feet (79 meters) tall. The view is great and you can take some memorable pictures here. A short walking tour to the bottom of the waterfall is highly recommended - you simply must feel the roaring freshness and gentle and pure water drops on your face.

6: Steinsdalsfossen Waterfall

The next stop is at Steinsdalsfossen waterfall 164 feet (50 meters) tall. You can actually walk behind the falling water without getting wet. A walk behind the waterfall to the viewpoint is highly recommended.

7: Hardanger

The Hardangerfjord is the second longest fjord in Norway. We will be travelling along the fjord to Granvin, cross the fjord on the Hardanger bridge and continue our journey to Eidfjord.

8: Skårsvatnet

After passing through two quaint small towns Norheimsund and Øystese, we take a short detour to the Goldfish Lake Skårsvatnet a special lake with a large population of golden orfe. The fish is tame and most of the times can be observed very close to the shore.

Fyksesund Bridge (Pass by)

After the Goldfish Lake we continue on to Fyksesundet a narrow fjord, which we cross on Fyksesund suspension bridge, built in 1937.

9: Steinstø Fruktgard

On the other side of Fyksesundet lies Steinstø a small farming community with Steinstø fruit farm and fruit kiosk and café. We can stop there for a cup of coffee, a piece of apple pie and a view of the fjord.

Hardanger Fjord (Pass by)

We continue our journey along the fjord. Enjoy the views: natural beauty of the scenery with small quaint villages scattered along the coast.

10: Hardanger Bridge

After a while we come to one of the Hardangerfjord's narrower places. Here we will cross the fjord on the Hardanger Bridge a suspension bridge from 2013 with a main span of 1310 metres (4300 ft). This magnificent structure is preceded by an 8 km (5 miles) long tunnel. Another tunnel awaits on the other side. We stop at the viewpoint overlooking the fjord and the bridge on the other side.

11: Norsk Natursenter - Hardanger

When we have passed the village of Eidfjord, a popular cruise ship destination, we drive to Øvre Eidfjord, where we visit the "Norwegian Nature Center Hardanger", a museum and visitor center of the Hardangervidda National Park, dedicated to flora, fauna, geology and history of the region. There you may also watch a new panoramic film "Norway my country - fjords, mountains, waterfalls and Hardangervidda" a spectacular journey through fjords and mountain landscapes and mighty waterfalls. It is a beautiful film on panoramic screen about the magnificent sights on Hardangervidda plateau. After the museum, there will be time for lunch at a cozy yet spacious café. The museum and café open only during the season from April 1 to October 31. Out of season we can have lunch in a café in Eidfjord.

12: Vøringfossen

Our next stop, and the main destination of the journey, is Vøringsfossen waterfall, 182 metres (597 ft) tall, located at the very end of Måbødalen valley where the Hardangervidda begins. The viewpoint consists of several secure platforms overhanging the waterfall and the canyon. The view is mesmerizing: raging waters falling to the bottom of the canyon, the rugged valley with a stream meandering below surrounded by lush yet fragile tundra landscape.

In case we have enough time, we may continue farther up into the Hardangervidda plateau above the timberline where the landscape changes and we find ourselves in bare mountain landscape surrounded by rock and lichen.

After Vøringsfossen waterfall, and possibly a short ride up the Hadangervidda plateau, we return to Bergen: the road goes back to the Hardangerfjord, across the bridge and via the town of Voss. The tour ends in Bergen.

13: Skjervsfossen Waterfall

On our way back to Bergen we take a short detour on an alternate road and make a stop at one more waterfall: Skjervsfossen, with its twin falls plunging out from a height of 150 metres.

Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf (Pass by)

Colorful Bryggen is one of Bergen's and Norway's main attractions. The very first buildings in Bergen were situated at Bryggen, which has been a vibrant and important area of the city for many centuries. Bryggen is now part of our common heritage and has a place on UNESCOs World Heritage List. The world heritage site consists of the old Hanseatic wharf and buildings, and is one of the best known urban areas from the Middle Ages in all of Norway.

St. Mary's Church (Pass by)

The construction of St Mary"s Church was completed around 1180, making it the oldest remaining building in Bergen. Although having been built as a parish church for the Norwegian population, St Mary"s Church was taken over by the city"s large German population in 1408. By belonging to the wealthy Germans, it's richly adorned and escaped the fate of being turned into a ruin, unlike several of the other churches in the city. St Marys church is a basilica, i.e the body of the church is divided into a lofty nave and two lower side aisles with separate roofs. This is a feature borrowed from medieval cathedrals, and is relatively seldom found in an ordinary parish church.

Bergenhus Fortress (Pass by)

Bergenhus Fortress and Royal Castle is one of the oldest and best preserved stone fortifications in Norway, and it contains buildings dating back as far as 1240. In medieval times the area was known as Holmen and contained the royal recidence, as well as a cathedral, several churches, the bishop's residence and a Dominican monastery. Excavations have revealed foundations of buildings believed to date back to before 1100. In the 13th century Bergen was the capital of Norway and Holmen was the main seat of Norway's rulers. Håkon's Hall was built in 1247 and It was the largest and most imposing building of the royal residency in the 13th century.

Skuteviken (Pass by)

Skuteviken developed as an isolated suburb of Bergen, under the protection of the Sverresborg fortress which was built in 1183. In Skuteviken, small wooden houses were built without any overall plan, and the growth took place until the end of the 18th century. The name Skuteviken (ship bay) probably comes from the fact that the merchants at Bryggen used the beach at Bradbenken and in Skuteviken as a mooring place when the ships were to be keeled. Although Skuteviken is an old place and located just outside Bergen, it was not until the 20th century that a road was built along the beach into the city.

Måseskjæret (Pass by)

Måseskjæret is one of three islets in the bay of Sandviken. The first settlement on the islet came in 1804 and was a summer residence. Towards the end of the 19th century, the rest of the islet was developed. Today, it is the modern apartment building that characterizes Måseskjæret. Måseskjæret 1 is a summer resident that got its current name from the islet just outside. The house was built by Christopher Kahrs in 1795, and is a single-storey building with a high hipped roof and center sheet. Lyststedet Måseskjæret 1 was protected by the National Heritage Board from 1927.

Byfjorden (Pass by)

The 15-kilometre (9.3 mi) long fjord separates the island of Askøy from the mainland Bergen Peninsula, passing right north of the city of Bergen.

Among the major war events on The City Fjord are the naval battle in 1665 between an English and a Dutch fleet, during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. A fleet of sixty Dutch ships, including ten ships from the Dutch East India Company with very valuable cargo, sought refuge in Bergen's neutral port during the pursuit of English warships. The forces in the city joined the battle on the Dutch side. The battle was short and bloody and the English fled. A cannonball stuck in the wall of the Cathedral in Bergen has long been thought to come from this battle.

Vågsgaten 20 (Pass by)

The submarine bunker Bruno at Laksevåg, was built into the mountains by the German occupation forces from 1941. 18,000 tonnes of steel, 500,000 tonnes of sand, 120,000 tonnes of cement and 15 tonnes of dynamite were used to build the submarine bunker. The heavy work was carried out by Soviet prisoners of war. It was subjected to a allied air attack in October 1944. Only a few bombs hit the target, most hit the settlement and killed 193 civilians, including 61 children at Holen school. Two of the planes were shot down. Under the five-meter-thick concrete roof, three docks are hiding today. In 1952, the facility was taken into use by the Norwegian Navy and is still used today.

Georgernes Verft (Pass by)

The original shipyard was built in the 1780s by Georg Brunchorst and Georg Vedeler, and it was called Georgernes Shipyard. In 1853 Annanias Dekke started the yard's heyday. Dekke had learned shipbuilding, in Boston, and a series of magnificent sailing ships were built here. He gained a reputation as one of Norway's best ship designers and shipbuilders. In 1910 a sardine factory was established in parts of the shipyard area, and in the following years it became one of the largest sardine factories in Norway. Today, the factory lives a new life as "USF Verftet", a 12,000 m2 large art and culture arena with a total of 120 companies in all disciplines within art and culture.

Fredriksberg Fort (Pass by)

Fredriksberg Fortress is located on the highest point of the Nordnes peninsula. On the west side there is a steep side down to the sea, and from the fortress there is a good view over Bergen city center and towards Laksevåg. In the 17th century, there were fortifications with cannon batteries around the entire Nordnes peninsula . Fredriksberg fort was a military area until 1904. From the 18th century, the fort also got a fire tower, and in the event of a fire, the military had to fire shots. The number of shots fired told where in the city it burned. In 1926, the fire service here was closed down, but the fire tower still stands on the fort today.

Nordnes Sjobad (Pass by)

Nordnes Sea Water Pool was opened in 1910, and until 1965 the sea water pool consisted of floating wooden boxes in the sea that were attached to land with chains. In 1965, the modern seawater pool was ready and later the water was also heated. Today, Nordnes Sjøbad is a 25m long, heated, saltwater swimming pool. The main pool is kept lovely and warm at a temperature of 29°C (84°F) and you can also take a refreshing dip in the sea. The facilities include indoor changing rooms and a sauna.

Bergen Aquarium (Pass by)

Bergen Aquarium is a facility from 1960 that shows fish, aquatic animals and penguins. The aquarium also has a tropical section with snakes, crocodiles, spiders and other tropical animals. The aquarium has more than 300 species and over 60 large aquariums. In 2016, an ocean aquarium was opened that can be seen from the outside and inside. Penguins, sea lions, otters and large fish live in four outdoor ponds, and in the tropical section there are snakes, crocodiles, spiders, lizards and other exotic animals.

Tollbodallmenningen (Pass by)

In 1561, Bergen got its first customs house, which also became the city's largest wooden building. The jetties protruded more than 100 meters into the sea. Thus one came out on such deep water that even large ships could dock. The Tollbod extension served both as a shelter against the northwest storm and as a narrowing of Vågen, so that it became easier to prevent smuggling.

Nykirken (Pass by)

The large, white, stone, cruciform church was consecrated in 1622 as "Holy Trinity Church", but it's generally known as Nykirken (The new church). When the church was originally built in 1622, there were other churches in Bergen that were already several hundred years old, so this church was nicknamed "the new church", a name which has stuck for centuries. It is also an appropriate nickname, since the churches on this site have burned down several times and then been rebuilt, so it literally is usually the "newest" church in the central city.

Murhvelvingen (Pass by)

Murhvelvingen was built after the town fire in 1561 as a private house and representation for the sheriff of Bergenhus fortress. He had received the king's permission to collect soapstone from a monastery ruins, and this can be seen in corners and frames. The building was damaged by fires in 1625, 1640 and 1643. It was repaired by public funds in the years 1651, and after that used by guards. The lower floor has several smaller basements on each side of the vaulted passage, where there have been shops since the 17th century. Large slate slabs from Hardanger are just as nice today as when the house was built. In the basement, dynamite was also sold until the late 1960s, allegedly enough to blow up the whole city.

Fish Market (Pass by)

The Fish Market in Bergen is one of Norway's most visited outdoor markets, and it has a charming location in the heart of the city. The square has been a meeting place for townspeople, merchants, farmers and fishermen for centuries. You can find fresh fish, shellfish and local farm products such as fruits, berries, vegetables and flowers here. There are also several restaurants serving a large selection of seafood. The outdoor Fish Market is open from May to September, while the food hall with outlets and restaurants is open all year. In addition to the merchants on land, there were also historical sales from boats along the quay. Fishermen who lived outside the city rowed into the square to sell the catch of the day before rowing home the same day.

Bergenhus fortress is a fortress located in Bergen, Norway. Located at the entrance of Bergen harbour, the castle is one of the oldest and best-preserved stone fortifications in Norway. 3: Domkirken (Bergen Cathedral)

Bergen Cathedral is a cathedral in the city of Bergen in Vestland county, Norway. It is the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Bjørgvin as well as the seat of the "Bergen domkirke" parish and the seat of the Bergen domprosti (arch-deanery). It is part of the Church of Norway. The first recorded historical reference to this church is dated 1181. It retains its ancient dedication to Saint Olaf. The cathedral seats about 1,000 people.

Bergen Classic- "Vidden"We do the walk that is loved by all local mountain enthusiasts. The walk is from Mt Ulriken to Mt Fløyen. Starting from Mt Ulriken makes for an easier walk, (still a hard and long hike) and you get great views of Bergen and the Byfjord. Mt Ulriken is the highest mountain in Bergen at 643 metres, and our destination is Mt Fløyen, which is 300 metres.

1 hour of gastronomic (food tasting) tour and 1 hour of walking part of your tour will be ended at the lower station of Floibanen the city funicular line. Begin your private tour with hotel or port pickup in Bergen, and travel west via Highway 7, one of Norways scenic tourist roads, to Hardangerfjord.

On route, hear about the regions history and nature from your driver-guide, and take in the mountain pastures, deep valleys and pretty villages.

Make photo stops at the waterfalls of Fossen Bratte and Steinsdalsfossen, and see Lake Skåsvatnet, known as the Goldfish Lake for its colonies of goldfish. Learn how the fish were released here in 1914 and watch them in the waters.

Continue to Hardangerfjord and soak in the full scale of the mountain-framed inlet as you drive toward the upper end. Then, venture across the Hardangerfjord Bridge, one of the worlds longest suspension bridges, absorbing the incredible surrounding scenery.

On the other side, pass through the town of Eidfjord and stop in Øvre Eidfjord, a tiny village beautifully set beneath the Hardangervidda mountain plateau.

We pick you up from your hotel with our VIP car, and go towards Norheimsund, in the Hardanger-fjord region. On the way we stop by two waterfalls: Fossen Bratte, and Steinsdalsfossen, the last one you can walk behind.

We continue to Norheimsund, and change over to our boat, M/Y Iselina Bella, a Princess 50.

From Norheimsund we cruise into the narrow, remote and undiscovered pristine Fyksesund fjord, which is only accessible by boat. We stay in here for a couple of hours, just to enjoy the silence in the nice nature, between the steep mountains, with waterfalls directly down to the fjord. You can have a drink from the waterfalls if you like, a shower under them, or a swim in the fjord.

When then cruise back to Norheimsund for lunch at Thon Hotel Sandven, or even better: The small family run Spilde apple farm, with possibilities for cider tasting as well as lunch.

Car back to Bergen. Typically we will be back in Bergen around 6 PM

Hit the E16 road in your private vehicle, traveling by the famous Dale of Norway sweater factory in the village of Dale, then through the town of Voss. Make a brief stop at the Tvindefossen waterfall for photos, take a deep breath of mountain air to smell the clean, pristine waters.

Continue your trip to the Stalheim Hotel to visit its well-known terrace, which opens up to fantastic views over the Nærøydalen Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Back in your vehicle, descend the dramatically steep Stalheimskleiva Road to the valley's floor (available from May till September only), where you will visit the ancient village of Gudvangen.

Depart from Gudvangen on a cruise (if option selected) to Flåm, exploring the area around the Aulandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. Choose between a RIB, a motor yacht, and a passenger ferry for your cruise.

Upon arrival at Flåm, enjoy lunch in a local restaurant (own expense), then enjoy free time to browse the souvenir shops, the museum of Flåmsbana railway, or the local microbrewery at your leisure. After lunch, get back in the car and head towards the scenic Stegastein viewing point, a 30-meter long platform hanging over Aurlandsfjord at 650 meters above sea level (from May till September only, otherwise upon special request). The narrow road and the viewing point will give you some breathtaking pictures and vivid emotions.

If you selected the cruise and train option, board the Flåmsbana railway from Flåm to the mountain railway station Myrdal, located 2,844 feet (867m) above sea level. During the scenic journey, have your camera ready for views of canyons, mountainsides, and waterfalls. Make a brief stop at the gushing Kjøsfossen waterfall. Change trains at Myrdal to head back to Voss; upon arrival, you can tour a medieval church dating from 1277 and an 11th-century stone cross.

Lastly, take the return journey by car to your hotel in Bergen to conclude your tour.

1: Tvindefossen

Along the way, stop at the Tvindefossen waterfall and capture the scenery on camera.

2: Stalheimskleiva

Visit the Stalheim Hotel with your guide and enjoy fine views over the UNESCOlisted Nærøydalen Valley from the terrace. Probably the most beautiful view of the day - and you will continue - The Stalheimskleiva Road - Stalheimskleiva is the name of the 1.5-km-long stretch of road that winds its way up the mountainside from the end of the Nærøydalen valley to the top at Stalheim. It is one of Northern Europe's steepest roads and offers beautiful views.The Stalheimskleiva road runs up a ridge between two cascading waterfalls that can both be seen from the road. To the north, you can see the Sivlefossen waterfall, which has a fall of about 140 metres. To the south, the Stalheimsfossen waterfall with a fall of 126 metres. 3: Gudvangen

Then, follow the winding road through the valley to the ancient village of Gudvangen nestled at the end of the Nærøyfjord.

Here, take a sightseeing cruise by passenger ferry (motor yacht, or RIB are available on request and additional price) over the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord to Flåm.

Part 1 - A walk through the city
In the first part of the tour, we go for a walk through the lively centre of Bergen. On our way past the fish market, the theatre and the old fire station, we encounter personalities such as Edvard Grieg and Henrik Ibsen. On our tour, however, I don't only want to bring you closer to the historical sides of the city, but also to the people of Bergen and their life in the here and now.

Part 2 - Bryggen and the German Hanseatic League
The picturesque, colourful wooden houses in the Bryggen district are the symbol of the city. Today there are cafes, restaurants and bars among the houses, which are frequented by locals and tourists. 400 years ago, however, there was the smell of dried cod in the air, which was stored here. German merchants bought the cod from Norwegian fishermen and then exported it to all of Europe. This fish made Bergen the most important trading metropolis in Scandinavia at the time. On our way through the Bryggen World Heritage Site, I will tell you what made the fish so special, what the Hanseatic League was and how life for the German merchants played out here.
