Seen from the sea the museum looks like a small oil platform. The unusual architecture has made the museum a landmark in the Port of Stavanger. The museum was built in stone, glass, and concrete and covers approximately 5,000 square meters. The museum focuses on offshore petroleum activity, especially in the North Sea. Original objects, models, films and interactive exhibits convey the history of oil operations on the Norwegian continental shelf. The museum shows the technological development from the beginning of the Norwegian oil history in the mid-1960s, from the first North Sea drilling platforms, through steel and concrete platforms developed and built in Norway, to modern, flexible production ships and subsea systems.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included2: Ovre HolmegateA colourful street in the centre of Stavanger where all buildings have been painted in fresh and vibrant colours. This is perhaps the most colourful street in all of Norway, and is often referred to as Stavanger's 'Notting Hill'. The area experienced a renaissance in 2005 when hairdresser Tom Kjørsvik envisaged doing something totally unique with it. All the houses along the street were painted in different hues, in accordance with a colour scheme suggested by the artist Craig Flannagan. As you wander along Øvre Holmegate, you will find several niche shops as well as charming cafes and pubs.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: ValbergtarnetAnother of Stavanger's well preserved older buildings, Valberget, can be found to the north of Market Square between Vågen and Østre Havn (East Harbor). Located in the Holmen peninsula, the oldest part of the town, Valberget is a watchtower built in 1853 on the highest point in the city. It was the home of the watchman, whose job it was to alert everyone when there was a fire. Today, it offers great views, and a little museum is on the first floor.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free4: Stavanger CathedralLocated in the city center, Stavanger Cathedral was built in the 12th century by Englishman Reginald of Worcester (later known as Bishop Reinald) as a three-aisle Romanesque basilica. The choir was rebuilt in the Gothic style after a fire in 1272, and the whole church was renovated in the 19th century. Notable interior features include the richly carved Baroque pulpit (1658), a stone font of the Gothic period, and the stained glass in the east window depicting New Testament scenes.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included5: Gamle StavangerOne of the most picturesque areas of the city is Gamle Stavanger, a historic area where a collection of quaint older homes lie along meandering stone-paved streets. This is, in fact, the largest surviving wooden house settlement in northern Europe. Its streets are well worth exploring, as are its galleries and museums.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free6: LedaalBuilt as a summer residence for the Kielland family in 1799, Ledaal House is a perfectly preserved example of how Norway's elite lived in the early 19th century. The richly furnished mansion still functions as a royal residence, as well as a museum, and the entire property is owned by the state in trust. Its historic gardens are well worth seeing and are connected to three others via a historic garden trail.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Not IncludedADDITIONAL INFOTravelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitnessNot wheelchair accessibleThis tour/activity will have a maximum of 4 travelersCANCELLATION POLICYAll sales are final. The general pick-up time is 5AM, but please check our pick-up time table for exact times. The drive takes 2h and 30 minutes, passing by scenic landscape along the way. There are restrooms at the parking area. Here the guide will provide information about the trail, and expected conditions. When everyone is ready, the hike begins. The pace allows for time to adjust clothes and equipment, time to rest and enjoy snacks, and for taking pictures along the way.
After approximately 3 hours of hiking, we will arrive at Kjeragbolten, the Kjerag Boulder. For those who dare (if conditions allow), one can stand atop the Boulder, which hangs a heart-stopping 984 meters above the fjord. Note that during the pre-season (May), there may be so much snow that standing on the Boulder itself is not safe.
After we have enjoyed the scenery, relaxed, and enjoyed a quick lunch, we head back down. It normally takes about 3 hours to get back down to the parking area. Exhausted but satisfied, we get back in the car. This hike is arduous, and recommended for people with hiking experience in rough terrain.Duration: 12 hoursADDITIONAL INFOSpecialized infant seats are availableNot recommended for travelers with spinal injuriesNot recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular healthNot recommended for pregnant travelersService animals allowedTravelers should have a high level of physical fitnessParticipants must be 16 years or olderParticipants should have previous hiking experienceNot wheelchair accessibleThis tour/activity will have a maximum of 8 travelersCANCELLATION POLICYFor a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. This experience requires good weather. The tour starts in the central Stavanger city harbor, where youll get your equipment for the tour along with a safety briefing from your captain. On your way out of the harbor, you will pass by Stavanger from the seaside, a true picture of Norwegian history. The speed starts out gentle, allowing you to take in a full view of the bustling life on the waterfront. Make sure to catch a glimpse of the old city, the Valgberg tower, and the Norwegian Oil Museum.Hogsfjorden (Pass by)Embark on your adventure to Lysefjorden as you move into the open waters and leave the city astern. Equipped with two four-stroke engines, youll skim across the surface at 35 knots, zooming past islets, skerries, and reefs. As you race along, youll spot cozy seaside cabins nestled along the shore and some sizeable salmon farms.Lysefjord (Pass by)The Lysefjord, spanning an impressive 42 kilometers, is one of the most famous Norwegian Fjords. Carved by millennia of ice ages, it showcases a dramatic landscape where steep mountains, adorned with lush emerald-green forests and cascading waterfalls, rise sharply from pristine waters. The fjord's name, meaning "The Fjord of Light," is derived from the light-colored granite rocks along its sides. As you venture through its narrow corridor, youll be on the lookout for the bustling wildlife that inhabits the region. On a good day it will be possible to spot seals, porpoises, sea eagles, and more.1: FantahålåThe notorious Vagabond Cave, known locally as Fantahålå, is a hidden recess in the fjords mountainside tucked away in a narrow cove. Local lore tells of a band of tramps who once hid here to escape the ire of the local sheriff. As the story goes, when he finally caught up to them, they kept him at bay with a rock-solid argumentpelting him with stones until he left them alone.
Your captain will navigate the boat right into this hidden pocket in the cliffs, letting your imagination drift back in time to the drama that once unfolded here.10 minutes -Admission Ticket Included2: PreikestolenSculpted by a melting glacier 10 000 years ago at the end of the last ice age, Pulpit Rock is one of the most famous cliffs in the world and one of the most iconic sights in all of Norway. Your captain will position your boat for a front-row view to admire its gravity-defying cliff-face and tell you the stories of the rocks special place in Norwegian history. From its discovery and treacherous first ascent by Thomas Peter Randulf over a hundred years ago, to its descent by one Henry Cavill by way of Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible: Fallout.10 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: Hengjanefossen waterfallAs we approach Hengjanefossen, you'll feel the power of nature in all its glory. This waterfall, also known as Whisky Falls, stands 75m tall and is unique in that it's not a single, uniform fall. Instead, it's a tangle of cascading stream that weave together to create a truly mesmerizing sight. As the water pours down the cliff face, it creates a mist that shrouds the mountainside in an ethereal haze. Your captain will take you right up to the base of the falls, giving you a perspective few people ever get to experience. You can even grab a drink if you're up for it, the runoff is crystal clear, though sadly not as potent as the nickname may suggest. This playful moniker is a nod to a moonshine distillery that once operated in its vicinity, run by a German fellow named Heinrich Mohr.10 minutes -Admission Ticket FreeADDITIONAL INFOService animals allowedPublic transportation options are available nearbyNot recommended for travelers with spinal injuriesNot recommended for pregnant travelersSuitable for all physical fitness levelsWe always check the back-onboard time for cruise passengers, and will never let you miss your ship, cutting the trip short if need be.Not wheelchair accessibleThis tour/activity will have a maximum of 15 travelersCANCELLATION POLICYFor a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. This experience requires good weather. The monument was created by sculptor Fritz Røed from Bryne and was unveiled by King Olav V of Norway in 1983. The three bronze swords stand 10 metres (33 ft) tall and are planted into the rock of a small hill next to the fjord. They commemorate the historic Battle of Hafrsfjord which by tradition took place there in the year 872, when King Harald Fairhair gathered all of Norway under one crown. The largest sword represents the victorious Harald, and the two smaller swords represent the defeated petty kings. The monument also represents peace, since the swords are planted into solid rock, so they may never be removed.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free4: Gamle StavangerOne of the most picturesque areas of the city is Gamle Stavanger, a historic area where a collection of quaint older homes lie along meandering stone-paved streets.
