Novi Sad is the capital of the province of Vojvodina and the second-largest city in Serbia. Born from a merchant colony on the banks of the Danube River, just outside the gates of a Habsburg-era fortress, it grew to become a key economic and cultural hub, earning the nickname Serbian Athens.
