2: The Lost City of Wubar

Visit 'Lost the City of Ubar' (UNESCO World Heritage Site), one of the ancient sites in the Dhofar region where archaeologists using remote sensing equipment discovered the city's remains in 1992. Ubar is thought to have been inhabited from approximately 2800 B.C. to approximately 300 A.D. and was an important trading center for frankincense before being buried in the rising dunes. At the site, there is a small museum displaying archaeological discoveries. The entrance fee is included.

The bleak, arid desert of Rub al Khali, also known as the Empty Quarter, stretches from the mountain's foothills to an enormous sandy plain that covers the majority of the area. Start the tour in the afternoon by 4×4 vehicle and drive to Desert Safari empty quarter, you will be seeing the largest desert of the World "Empty Quarter" that spreads across many countries of the Middle East.

You will see the 5 square kilometres spread plantation of Frankincense tree on the natural reserve at Wadi Dawkah (UNESCO).

You will see also the historical site of Ubar at the town of Shisr, known as The Lost City or Ubar or Atlantis of the Sand or the city of the pillars. This city was used for the trade of Frankincense, which was once traded as Gold and Silver.

Next stop is the black camel farm which it was using for transporting the Frankincense.

What else could be better than a walk on the desert and seeing the setting sun. Have sand bashing in the desert (optional) and sand. The guide and the driver is experienced in the desert driving.

Its walls were constructed from solid blocks of Taqa Stone, a local limestone material composed chiefly of fossilized shells and corals. You can see the well, roofless jail, formal sitting area also known as majlis, bedrooms, kitchen and stores. In these areas you will see traditional weaponry, jewelry, every day household items and fascinating traditional colorful pieces of clothes.

Taqa Castle is one of Dhofars most distinguished landmarks, which was built in the 19th century. WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Fazayah Beach

The drive to the large bay of Fazayah, about 80 km west of Salalah, is already fun, because the route leads past Mughsail beach to the hairpin curves on the flanks of Wadi Afawl and on to the heights of Jebel Qamar. Up there, you feel a bit like the lookout in the mast of a sailing ship: sea breeze and an unobstructed view to the horizon, except that there are also the steep rocky cliffs with their bizarre formations. A steep but good path leads down to several small and large sandy beaches. Now it's the perfect time to put on your swimming clothes and dive into the waves of the Indian Ocean.

2: Al Mughsail Beach

Coming down from the mountains, youll head west to popular Mughsail. The first stop is the beautiful sand beach, sprinkled with gazebos and palm trees for those who want to rest in the shade as they listen to the waves. The mountains come very close to the ocean at that point and make for magnificent views.

3: Marneef Cave

Another featured sight at Mughsail are the blowholes, where water from the sea forces its way through the rock, shooting up to 28 m high in peak season. High tide during Khareef brings the best sights, but the phenomenon may be observed at high tides throughout the year. Between the beach and the blowholes you will pass the lagoon, a haven for birds migrating between Africa and Europe or Asia.

4: Hidden Beach ViewPoint

The final stop west will be Masood Beach, a beautiful white sand beach, tucked so neatly into the mountains, some call it the hidden beach. The close combination of sheer mountains with the sand and water are a stunning sight to enjoy.
The return journey to Salalah will include a view of famed frankincense trees and at many points along the trip you may get the chance to see camels or other animals of Dhofar.
