1: Ria Formosa Natural Park

The Ria Formosa lagoon, located in the Algarve, in southern Portugal, is a system of barrier islands that communicates with the sea through six inlets. Five of these inlets are natural and have mobility characteristics. The sixth is an artificial inlet that was opened with the purpose of allowing easier access to the port of Faro.
Within the Ria Formosa system, different and sometimes antagonistic uses may be found. Part of the system is a Natural Park but Ria Formosa also plays an important role in the region's economy. Beyond the tourist use the system also supports other economic activities like seafood farms (including grooved carpet shell harvesting) and the port of Faro.
The Ria Formosa is also a designated Natural Park of over 170 km² and a stopping place for hundreds of different birds during the spring and autumn migratory periods.

Ria Formosa Natural Park (Pass by)

Serving as a transitional area between land and sea, the Ria Formosa is a vast lagoon system that stretches for 60 km along the coast of the eastern Algarve. It covers an area of approximately 18,000 hectares.
It is the most important wetland zone in southern Portugal and features a wide variety of habitats: barrier islands, marshes, sandbanks, dunes, saltpans, freshwater and brackish lakes, water courses, scrubland and farmland; all of which is also propitious to a tremendous variety of fauna and flora.
Classed as a wetland zone of international interest, the Ria Formosa is particularly noted for its birdlife. The area is a winter home for birds from north and central Europe, as well as being on migration routes.
From a botanical point of view, the particular highlight is the vegetation on the dunes and in the marshes.
A true nursery for marine species, it is also an area where bivalve molluscs are produced.

One week tour based in Monte Gordo

This is a relaxing week in the East tip of the Algarve, near the border with Spain. Youll enjoy a mix of gentle walks, spiced by a ferry excursion across the great river of the South, the Guadiana, towards Ayamonte.

Also, we will head to visit the historical and quaint towns of Tavira, Vila Real de Santo António, and Olhão. In Tavira and Olhão, get ready for two boat tours in the amazing Ria Formosa.

A day in the Castro Marim Nature Reserve, where well look for flamingos, a common site amongst the traditional saltpans.

2: Altura

DAY 2 - Altura to Monte Gordo Walk

Well leave the hotel this morning and take the transport to Altura, a nearby coastal village. We then return walking along the long sandy beach and its wide line of dunes. Raised walkways lead to various parts of the sands, and give us the opportunity (especially on the western walkway) to observe how the dune vegetation changes from the inland edge of the dunes to the side facing the sea.

Next to the sea, where the dunes are higher, there is an abundance of European beach grass, sea holly, fluffy cottonweed and eye-catching beach daffodils. The
beach is vast, stretching for as far as the eye can see, and the sea is calm and warm.

At lunchtime, well have the opportunity for a pic-nic lunch (not included) at the Monte Gordo seafront. We then return to the hotel for a free afternoon at leisure, with time to enjoy the sun and the sea.

3: Vila Real de Santo Antonio

DAY 3 - Vila Real de Santo António and Ayamonte

Today we start the day with a walk through the Monte Gordo pine forest. The first part of the walk finishes in Vila Real de Santo António, a charming town with a fascinating history and architecture, in the estuary of the Rio Guadiana, which separates Portugal from Spain.

We'll take you for a closer look to this city, founded in 1774, under the Enlightenment principles. It was built as a replica of the central Lisbon's street layout after the 1755 devastating earthquake.

Well then take the ferry to Ayamonte, in Spain. Well tour around the city, soaking the atmosphere and passing throw the small streets. After lunch, we offer the option of walking with the tour leader back to the hotel, or to stay in Vila Real for further exploration, with return by taxi/public bus (not included).

4: Monte Gordo

DAY 4 - Free day
This is an ideal opportunity to relax and enjoy the attractions of East Algarve. You can walk/tour independently, or visit local places of interest. From Monte Gordo there is a wide variety of sightseeing available (we can advise and/or recommend options according to your interests). On free time keen bird-watchers may wish to visit Castro Marim in the fens and marshes of the "Reserva Natural do Sapal", famous for their flamingos, or enjoy other local sightseeing tours.

5: Tavira

DAY 5 - Tavira
This morning well take our transport to discover Tavira, a lovely and quaint old-Portuguese charm, with over 30 churches, cobbled streets, and bougainvillea lined balconies. In the historical old town, the castle and the typical houses provide cultural interest and special charisma.

The River Gilão, with a workaday fishermans riverfront, runs to the azure lagoons of the Ria Formosa. Well take a boat tour in the Rias channels, and stop at Taviras Island, for a visit.

We then take the boat back to Tavira center, and continue our walk to the train to return to Monte Gordo.

6: Castro Marim

DAY 6 - Castro Marim Nature Reserve

Today well take a transfer to the Castro Marim Nature Reserve a unique landscape in the Eastern Algarve. A true realm of serenity, far from the hustle and bustle of the beach resorts, this is a haven for countless bird species such as the flamingos who regularly visit this charming patchwork of green-blue marshes and crisp white saltpans. Our walk through the salt pans will take us into Castro Marim, one of the oldest communities in the Algarve, and an important centre of Arab power until 1242.

After having lunch in Castro Marim (not included), well explore this historic town. A visit to the Castle, which was the first headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal, will provide more information about the historical, and cultural heritages of the area. We then transfer back to the hotel.

7: Olhao

DAY 7 - Olhão

After breakfast, we will head towards Olhão a picturesque coastal town inspired by Moroccan architecture that attracts artists, writers, and photographers. We have free time to discover the town and take lunch (not included).

The city center has a collection of white houses with roof terraces and minarets that form a patchwork of layering cubes. The waterfront avenue near the Ria Formosa is lined with glorious tile-fronted, 19th-Century townhouses, with verandas and wrought-iron work. The highlight is the colourful atmosphere at the Municipal Market, which fulfils its traditional function by day and is the setting for lively nightlife bars.

Now its time to discover the barrier Islands of the Ria Formosa. Well take a boat trip and visit and walk around one of the islands. We then return by ferry to catch our transport back to Monte Gordo in time for our final evening dinner together.

The navigation channels of the Ria Formosa are subject to tides, so we cruise to Desert Island via alternative routes depending on the tide. At high tide, we access the western tip of the island, its most wildest part The Sun's Edge. At low tide, the tour heads to the eastern end of the island, where the Faro-Olhão inlet is located, the privileged access point to the Ria Formosa from the sea. This is also where the prestigious Estaminé restaurant and the well-known Shell Beach are located. In this version, the boat stops at the easternmost point of Ilha Deserta and also at Vila do Farol 'Lighhouse Village' - Culatra Island.

WHAT TO EXPECT

You will start at the pine trees and a small mystic forest, just listening to the singing birds and footprints of the horse. Then, you will cross the dunes and will be able to feel the strength of the horse while you ride along the beach, always enjoying the best views along the coast. WHAT TO EXPECT

Starting from either one of the villages, this is a very versatile circuit that can be adapted for enduring and technical or casual/leisure riding experience. Suitable for all skill and fitness levels. We will start along some paths around the sea, passing by the Pontal of Carrapateira, to arrive at Amado Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. Over there, always through nature rails, we will cross to the other side, to arrive to Pedralva. The village of Pedralva was practically deserted and abandoned and was rebuilt some years ago, being today, an example of ecotourism, surrounded by fantastic nature. Then, we'll start our way back to Carrapateira going down Vilarinha valley and a deep forest. A rural and peaceful environment to fall in love with, while breathing the purest air.

Just before ending its 850km journey into the sea in Vila Real de Santo António, on the frontier with Spain, the River Guadiana winds its way through the plains, branching out into creeks and canals that flow into lakes, marshland and salt pans.
Here lies the oldest humid zone in Portugal, the Nature Reserve of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, a privileged shelter and nesting place for aquatic birds and for various species of fish, molluscs, and crustaceans. It is also an internationally recognized Ramsar Site, under the guardianship of UNESCO.
An array of bird species can be found here, as the black-winged stilt, the symbol of the Nature Reserve, the pied avocet, black-tailed godwit, common flamingo, common ringed plover, white stork, spoonbills, and Caspian terns, to name but a few.
The land is a charming geometric patchwork of grassy hills, dry scrubland, farmland, orchards, which contrast with the traditional salt pans, glistening fiercely under the sun.
For many centuries, salt, or white gold, was the main source of income in the region. The saltpans occupy around one-third of the protected area, and salt is still harvested using artisanal methods, producing a high-quality product, favoured by renowned chefs.
From the salt pans, you'll have a privileged view to the Castle, the Fort, and the walls of Castro Marim, one of the oldest communities in the Algarve, and an important centre of Arab power until 1242.
